'Why can't ShahRukh Khan be my hero?'

MADHU DAITHOTA

Her debut film in Kannada has just hit theatres. But Bollywood's all set for Deepika Padukone.

Her debut film Aishwarya directed by Indrajit Lankesh has just been released. And modelturned-actress Deepika Padukone is already being wooed by filmmakers from various film industries.

But it's choreographer-turneddirector Farah Khan who's managed to get a nod from the hot babe for a film with ShahRukh Khan.

"Yes, I will be working with ShahRukh Khan shortly — we will begin shooting by December,"confirms Deepika. She's really looking forward to the film and says she's excited about working with her icon.

"80 per cent of the films I've watched while growing up are his,"she says. So does the fact that King Khan is in his 40s and she just 20-something bother her? "If Amitabh Bachchan can play sexy Sam at his age, then why can't Shah Rukh be my hero? I don't think age has anything to do with acting. I think Shah Rukh will always be perceived as the boy-next-door — he's immortalised the Rahul character."

Deepika loved him in Swades and thought he did a fab job in the film. "And as far as he and I coming from various backgrounds is concerned, I'm sure the director, Farah, has visualised the two of us together before she decided to cast us together,"she says.

Deepika is also considering a change of look for the film. Is it to match the suave and stylish King Khan? "It's not just that.

I think it's important for every actor to keep changing his or her looks. It's an actor's responsibility to constantly keep re-inventing and staying versatile,"says Deepika.

The actress has taken her call to Bollywood quite seriously — besides experimenting with her looks, Deepika has also taken up diction and dance classes.

"I also believe that my work should speak for me. Which is why I never believed in partying or being seen at the right places. I don't find the need to do so. I prefer staying low-key and concentrating on work,"she says firmly.

Her efforts seem to have paid off because top filmmakers are approaching her to work in their films, including Rakeysh Prakash Mehra for a film with Abhishek and another Hrithik film. "I can't comment on anything. Nothing's concrete as yet,"she says.

But one thing everyone's curious about is why Deepika choose a Kannada film to debut when she was being offered projects from some of the top directors in the country?

"I've spent 19 years of my life in Bangalore and I'm comfortable with the language. So it was a sensible choice to make."

SRK chooses Om Shanti over New Year celebrations?

With the new SRK-Farah Khan project, Om Shanti Om so much in the news, ever wondered what happened to the project called Happy New Year that the duo were to do for Khan's flagship production banner? We asked the King himself and he was happy to set the record straight. "We couldn't work it out intelligently enough. We worked on it for about six months but we couldn't come to a great ending. The casting had not taken place and it was supposed to be shot in America for six months; I was not very keen on going & spending so much of my time there right away; so we thought we'll keep it for later. It's not shelved; it's just on a backburner." So if the rumor mills churn any more stories about this, just tell them - Shanti! What say, Farah?

Rahman faces the music!

By: Vickey Lalwani - Mid-Day.com
October 10, 2006

Considering that most filmmakers would give an arm and a leg to work with A R Rahman, it's something of a shocker to know that King Khan has replaced him with Vishal-Shekhar (Bluffmaster!, Dus) for his upcoming project. The film in question is Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om, which is being produced by SRK's banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.

SRK had a problem

The grapevine goes that the deal was scrapped for two reasons. Firstly, Shah Rukh didn't like the tunes that Rahman had composed. Secondly, Rahman demanded a huge amount as his fee, which Farah refused to pay.

When contacted, Rahman says that he is indeed out of Om Shanti Om, but denies that SRK had problems with his compositions (they've earlier worked together in Dil Se and Swades). "The truth is that we had some problems over contractual obligations. That is why I am not doing the film," he says.

Rahman adds that he wanted the publishing rights of the music to rest with the producer, the lyricist and the composer. But Farah and Shah Rukh flatly refused.

"Actually, Shah Rukh had a problem. He could not come to terms with what I wanted. We were trying to sort this out since the last two to three months, but it just didn't happen. SRK is a big star and maybe he doesn't need anybody. I wish it had materialised so that more composers can get their dues in India. Someone has to start this here and I am pressing for it."

Aamir understood

On the other hand, Rahman has succeeded in getting a share of the publishing rights for Aamir Khan's next film, directed by Abbas Tyrewalla. "I met Aamir and he understood what I wanted in an instant. It could be because Tyrewalla's film is a small budget venture, unlike Farah's, which is a biggie," Rahman says.

And what of the 2 crore that he demanded as his fee? Rahman says, "I don't do just the music in the songs, I also provide the background score. So I charge accordingly. But I guess it's okay. Farah and I went our own ways this time, but we did tell each other that we'd work together some other time."

'We love Rahman'

For his part, Vishal Dadlani is glad to be a part of the project. "It's true that Shekhar and I are doing Om Shanti Om now. We've known Farah for nearly two years and have done a lot of work together. She called us ten days back, and we were very happy to do it for her. We got so charged after listening to the story that we're already ready with four songs," he says.

The duo is also aware that Rahman was doing the film before them. "We knew that, but didn't get into the details of what transpired between them. To tell you the truth, we are in this industry because of Rahman. He's a great inspiration. If we were to make a film tomorrow, we would sign A R Rahman to compose the music."

Interestingly, quite a few eyebrows were raised when Farah chose Rahman over Anu Malik for Om Shanti Om, considering his music played a big role in the success of Main Hoon Na. Our well-informed sources tell us that before assigning Om Shanti Om to Rahman, Farah had indeed thought of Anu but later changed her mind.

We wonder if the soundtracks of Zindaggi Rocks or Umrao Jaan might have had something to do with that?

Vishal-Shekhar to replace Rahman for Om Shanti Om

by IndiaFM News Bureau, October 10, 2006 - 04:33 IST

Vishal-Shekhar has replaced A R Rahman for Farah Khan's forthcoming film Om Shanti Om, which is being produced under ShahRukh Khan's banner, Red Chillies Entertainment.

It is said that Shah Rukh is not happy with the tunes that Rahman had composed. It is also believed that Rahman demanded a huge amount as his fee which director Farah refused to pay.

However Rahman has a different story to say. According to him, Shah Rukh and he never had any problems regarding his compositions. The reason he opted out of this film was that Rahman wanted the music rights to stay with the Composer and the Lyricist along with the producer, something which Farah and ShahRukh Khan didn't agree with. However, Rahman succeeded in getting a share of the publishing rights for Aamir Khan's next film, directed by Abbas Tyrewalla.

Speaking about Om Shanti Om music director Vishal Dadlani said, "Farah has approved five tunes for Om Shanti Om. We have worked with her on Jingles for the past two years so we share a great comfort level working with her.

Hence, when she asked us if we would like to do the music of her next film, we agreed instantly. We are putting in our full energy in this film. We are going to create some awesome tracks, which have never been heard before."

When asked about replacing A. R Rahman, Vishal said "Yes, we knew that Rahman was initially going to do the music but due to some reason the deal didn't work out. But, as you know, both I and Shekhar are big fans of Rahman ourselves and have no connection with this episode."

There's no fight with Shah Rukh: A.R. Rahman

Oct 13, 2006

Mumbai, Composer A.R. Rahman has opted out of ShahRukh Khan's production "Om Shanti Om", but he insists the parting is amicable and certainly not final.

"I'm not doing Farah Khan's 'Om Shanti Om'. But that doesn't mean there's any quarrel with her or with Shah Rukh who produces her film," Rahman told IANS in an interview.

"Farah and I go back a long way. We did 'Bombay Dreams' together. In fact, I did some tunes for 'Om Shanti Om', which Farah has now returned to me, not because she didn't like them but because we just couldn't agree on my terms."

Rahman's new policy for music composition is simple.

"I just want to push for the financial rights of composers and lyricists, even producers. It's not as though I'm saying I want to be the sole proprietor of the songs I compose. But I want a share. There's nothing wrong with that. I can't run to music companies like T Series and Sa Re Ga Ma every time I need to use my own song."

Unfortunately, not too many producers in Bollywood are willing to share Rahman's demand for a share in the royalty for a song.

But Rahman holds no grudges against anyone, least of all Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh from whose productions the composer has opted out on this issue.

"In fact, Shah Rukh tried his utmost to see and to put forward my point of view."

Unfortunately, T Series, the music company, which would market the music of "Om Shanti Om", would have none of it.

Laughs Rahman. "I realise I've a huge fight though I don't see it as a fight. It's not like the British rock band Queen, which owned sole copyrights to all their songs. But I won't run to music companies in Mumbai for the rights for my songs every time I want to perform them at the concerts.

"Music companies must recognise the changing ground reality. Today the conventional outlets for music sales are drying up. Soon all music will be free while the performers and performances will be paid for."

Rahman is ready to take on the flak.

"Any change is frowned at. But I'm standing up for what I think is right. Yes, producers will back out. But that's fine. This gap gives me the excuse to work on my private album. For long I've been asked why I'm not doing a non-film album. Now I've the time to do that."

What could complicate matters for Rahman in Mumbai is his selective attitude to the copyright issue. While he has chosen to assert his financial rights over Aamir and Shah Rukh, Rahman has exempted Ashutosh Gowariker's "Jodha-Akbar" from the copyright net.

"It has to be flexible. I can't draw a net on all my assignments and draw up a uniform code. At the same time I'm not insecure about my career. If I lose out on some assignments in Mumbai, I'm ready to bear with the loss."

Farah Khan to work with Shakira

MUMBAI: Latin pop singer Shakira and India's choreography queen Farah Khan bonded so well during the rehearsal of the MTV awards in New York that the pop star has now expressed a desire to work with her and might just be in her next film Om Shanti Om that goes on floor in December.

The pop singer will be coming to India in March next year for a concert and that is the time she may be shooting a music video with Farah for her film.

Farah, who has just returned from the Big Apple, said, "Shakira is so impressed with the classical and semi-classical mudra I made her do for the song she performed at the MTV awards that she has expressed a desire to work with me. Right now it is just that we both have agreed to work with each other."

She added, "She loved Chhaiya Chhaiya and the only Indian actor she recognises is Shahrukh Khan. She is definitely glued in to Bollywood dancing and loves it. She wants me to incorporate it in her next music video, which she wants me to direct for her."

SRK calling: Samapika Debnath

Calcutta girl Samapika is flying high, having bagged a role in Farah Khan's next film Om Shanti Om, where she gets to rub shoulders with a certain Mr ShahRukh Khan. "My friends had collected five Pepsi crowns which luckily got me a chance to audition for the Pepsi Khol Milega Role contest. I cleared the preliminary rounds and qualified as one of the seven contestants who made it to the finals in Mumbai. I was judged by Farah Khan who stressed on stage presence, good body language and the X-factor," gushes the NIFD-trained fashion designer. Samapika has done some theatre, acted in Bengali serials Aastha, Projapataya Namah and Akash Kusum, and also worked in a Bhojpuri film. She is now busy shooting for Bappaditya's Kaal. Then, she will wait for December when shooting starts for Om Shanti Om. Picture by Aranya Sen
