Aishwarya Rai (Tulu-Kannada: ??????? ??, Devanagari: ???????? ??, IPA: [?v?rj?? r??j]) (born on November 1, 1973), is a two-time Filmfare Award-winning Indian actress and is supposedly the highest paid actress in India. She was Miss World in 1994. Rai has acted in Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Bengali and English films. She married Abhishek Bachchan on April 20, 2007. She is regarded as one of the biggest stars in South Asia.

Biography

Career

Aishwarya Rai debuted in Mani Ratnam's Tamil language film, IRUVAR with Mohanlal. She played a dual role in the film. She was introduced to Bollywood in the film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya; the film was a poor performer at the box office. However, her third project, a Tamil-language film, Jeans by S. Shankar was a critical success. Thus, she was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award South for Jeans.

Aishwarya then appeared in popular Bollywood films Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999) and Taal (1999). Her performance in the latter was highly acclaimed. She was awarded the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role in the film. Taal was also commercially successful. She then had a cameo in the hit Mohabbatein(2000). Her role as a rape victim in Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai was appreciated.

In 2002, Rai appeared with superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit in the lavishly produced Devdas, which was a major box-office success. The film attracted overseas attention as well, receiving a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her role. Thereafter, she gained the media's attention abroad for her beauty.

In 2003, Rai was a member of the jury at Cannes, and in 2004, she was chosen by TIME Magazine's Asian Edition as one of Asia's "100 Most Influential People" and in 2003, appeared on the Cover of TIME Magazine . She was the subject of a 60 Minutes profile on January 2, 2005 - "The Most Beautiful Face in the World." A month later she appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. She was also featured on Oprah's "Women Across the Globe" segment.

In October 2004, a wax figure of Rai became on display in London's Madame Tussaud's wax museum. The same month, her first foreign film released: Bride and Prejudice. It was a Hollywood-funded but Bollywood-influenced version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Pride and Prejudice which did well in UK, but flopped in the Inidan market.

She then appeared at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, as part of a performance showcasing Indian culture, on behalf of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, to be held in New Delhi. For her one-and-a-half-minute dance performance, Rai was reportedly paid three crore rupees, the equivalent of about US$ 600,000. At the end of the year, she had two releases: Umrao Jaan and Dhoom 2. Umrao Jaan was a commercial disaster but it gained Aishwarya positive reviews for her performance. However, her negative role in Dhoom 2, a sequel to the 2004 hit Dhoom brought her great attention as the movie was a hit.

On January 11, 2007, her film Guru, premiered in Toronto. The film was commercially and critically very successful. Her most recent film Provoked, where she played the protagonist, was released in India and the UK. Although the movie was critically acclaimed all over the world, it did commercially well only in the UK.

Personal life

Aishwarya Rai was born in Mangalore in the state of Karnataka, India to Krishnaraj and Vrinda Rai. A practicing Hindu, Rai has described herself as having "immense faith in God and my friends". When at home she attends the Siddhivinayak Mandir, devoted to Ganesha. In the words of Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya is very "domesticated".

Aishwarya began dating Salman Khan, her co-star from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, after filming ended. They broke up four years later, generating substantial amount of press attention. Aishwarya reportedly said that Salman physically abused her, which precipitated their parting of ways. Soon after in 2004, she started dating actor, Vivek Oberoi. They broke up in 2006 when Ash felt he was using her name to his popularity.

Then gossip columnists started to link her with Bollywood celebrity Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh Bachchan. She was frequently seen in public with him and his family, fueling rumors of an engagement. Finally, on January 14, 2007, Abhishek and Aishwarya officially announced their engagement. Then on April 20th they were married in India.

Wedding

The run-up as well as the marriage between Rai and Abhishek Bachchan was heavily covered by the media. Ongoing press coverage was also devoted to the fact that Rai is considered to be a "manglik"  Some media reports suggested that Rai underwent a number of rituals before the marriage took place in order to remove her status as a "manglik." Abhishek's father, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, denied these reports. Rai and Bachchan married in 20th April 2007 in a private ceremony. But being a high profile wedding in India, the venue - Amitabh Bachchan's home, Prateeksha - was flooded with hundreds of fans and media. There was a big scuffle between the media and the security guards leading to reports that the media are now proposing that Bachchans will be greeted with protests from media in their forthcoming film functions despite Amitabh Bachchan's apology two days after the wedding. Outside the venue of the wedding, was chaos and high drama as a girl alleging to be Abhishek's first wife slit her wrist.

Aishwarya arrives at Prateesha

Mumbai, April 20: Actress Aishwarya Rai arrived with her mother Brinda at the Bachchan residence Prateeksha here at 2:10 p.m. today for her marriage with Abhishek Bachchan.

She came in a grey Mercedes car decorated with roses and white flowers.

The car pulled right into Prateeksha and a posse of security guards surrounded the vehicle so that waiting media could not get a glimpse of the bride.

High drama on Abhishek's wedding day

Mumbai, April 20: Introducing a bizarre element into the high-profile Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai wedding this evening, a struggling actress cut her wrist outside the Bachchan residence, describing herself as the actor's girlfriend and making claims he had married her.
Janhavi Kapoor, who had done a minor role in Abhishek starrer 'Dus', created a furore outside the Bachchan residence 'Prateeksha' in suburban Juhu by slashing her wrist early this morning, claiming that she was married to the junior Bachchan. She claimed she was originally Janhavi Kapoor and her name was changed to Haya Rizvi when her mother married a Muslim.
With cuts on her wrist, police rushed her to Cooper Hospital where her wounds were treated. From there, she was taken to Juhu police station where she gave a written statement making claiming marriage with Abhishek.
Police were considering registering a case of attempted suicide against her and could arrest her.
With a bandage on her wrist, she met reporters at her residence making various claims that Abhishek had married her in December, applied 'sindoor' on her forehead and had promised that he would publicly solemnise it after he gets a Filmfare award.
In between, on one of the TV channels, one Kalbe Sajid, claiming to be her father-in-law, said she had married Kalbe Hussain in April 1997.
She dismissed questions that she had married earlier in Lucknow and was the mother of a child. "I am an Indian. How can I marry twice?" she said, adding she used to live in Allahabad before coming to Mumbai.
When asked about the timing of her claim, she said she was waiting for last four months and thought he might "change".

Among the contradictory statements she made was that Abhishek need not marry her but he should not marry Aishwarya and go for someone younger.

Asked for proof of her marriage with Abhishek, she said she need not give any proof to the media. (Agencies)

Ash-Abhishek finally say I Do

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan will be joined in holy matrimony today at Prateeksha. The time for the baraat is 4 pm, while the shubh mahurat for the wedding ceremony is 5.30 pm.The couple will have not one but two traditional rituals for their marriage.

Ash's mother, Vrinda Rai, has brought traditional mango leaves from a district called Kasargod in Mangalore for a ritual from the bride's side. Ash will wear a kanjeevaram saree for this particular ceremony.

The first ritual will begin with Bunt customs, a South Indian community to which Aishwarya belongs. However, a major chunk of the wedding and saat pheras will be according to North Indian customs.

It is also being said that Rituparno Ghosh (the Bengali director) and Jaya Bachchan have planned a Bengali style pooja that will be performed with Ash.

It's a ritual done by the mother-in-law to welcome the bride into the family, by buying her a nova (a gold wrist band). Amitabh and the other men in the family will be wearing traditional pink turbans.

Abhishek will also have to endure a haldi ceremony that will be performed at Prateeksha, hours before the actual mahurat.

The Bachchans have also taken a last-minute decision to shelve fireworks from the wedding day celebrations. There reasons are Teji Bachchan being in a critical state in the hospital, and fireworks go against their idea of a low-key marriage.

Also, the baraat will proceed from Jalsa at 5 pm and reach Pratiksha at 5:30 pm. Fireworks won't make sense at that hour of the day."

The Bachchan family had suggested the idea of confetti and glitter which was scrapped by the event managers as they may annoy the well-dressed glitterati. Both of Aishwarya Rai's high profile former boyfriends, Salman Khan and Viveik Oberoi, left the city earlier this week.

Salman has gone for personal work to Dubai apparently. His present girlfriend Katrina Kaif is also in Dubai shooting for Abbas Mastan's Race.

Viveik Oberoi too headed to Dubai last week, after wrapping up the shoot for Sanjay Gupta's Shootout at Lokhandwala.

He is currently visiting his ancestral home in Nampally (close to Chennai) and has been joined by his parents there.

The Oberoi family is expected to return to Mumbai on April 22, two days after Ash's wedding, to celebrate the birthday of Viveik's mother Yashodhara.

Mumbai, April 20: Bollywood star Abhishek Bachchan set off on a short journey from his suburban residence Jalsa to fetch his bride Aishwarya Rai, marking the start of their elaborate but private wedding here today.

The traditional 'baraat' was flagged off at 5 pm with Abhishek riding a colourfully decorated white horse and his nephew Agastya -- his sister Shweta Nanda's son -- sitting in front of him.

Dressed in a gold-embroidered white sherwani and with his face covered with a frill of flowers, Bollwyood's "Bunty" set forth with family and friends led by his illustrious father Amitabh.

As the accompanying musical band played popular songs from Abhishek's movies like "Kajra Re" and evergreen tunes such as "Aaj Mere Yar Ki Shaadi Hai", the groom waved to multitudes of fans and onlookers who had gathered outside Jalsa, eliciting crazed cat-calls and shrill whistles.

While male members of the 'baraat' wore saffron turbans, the women were clad in richly embroidered sarees in dazzling colours.

Earlier, all the 'baraatis' or members of the wedding procession boarded six luxury buses that took them to Prateeksha, the Bachchan family's other residence, where the wedding would be solemnised.

Last night at the sangeet ceremony of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, director Karan Johar made sure that Kareena Kapoor's presence was felt!

The industry rumour is that Karan, who choreographed and masterminded a large part of the show, planned a special grand finale where Aishwarya and Abhishek danced to Kareena's latest hit track, It's Rocking Yaara Kabhi Ishq To Karo from the film, Kya Love Story Hai, which coincidentally, releases tomorrow on 20th April, the same day as the Abhi-Ash wedding!

'Duplicate Amitabh' cheers the crowd outside Jalsa Mumbai, April. 20 (PTI): Amitabh Bachchan did not appear before fans thronging his residence here today for his son Abhishek's wedding but a man resembling the superstar kept the crowds entertained. The man, who said he had come from Bhopal to give his blessings to Abhishekh, kept waving to the crowds gathered outside Jalsa, the residence of the Bachchans. Though the fans did not get more than an occasional glimpse of the legend and his son, the "duplicate Amitabh" obliged people by climbing on to a temporary platform erected for the media and waving to them. People cheered the man while he stood smiling. Many even clicked photographs of him in excitement.

People from across Mumbai and different parts of the country gathered near Prateeksha and Jalsa, the two residences of the Bachchan family in Juhu, to get a glimpse of Abhishek and his bride Aishwarya Rai.
