N o, she isn't identifiable.. her photographs have not exactly been seen frequently in the Indian media. She has to be pointed out to me at a swanky Sahar hotel..otherwise she could well be any of the NRIs in- transit passengers tucking into tea and toast at the caf there. She's late by half an hour, which she explains was unavoidable because, "One of my uncles died.. I had to be there." Ramola Bachchan's countenance relaxes as slowly as the caf's service.. she starts off by saying that she has returned to Mumbai because her four children are all grown up and gainfully employed..they don't need her fussing over them. Nilima is an aeronautical engineer, Naina is a banker in London, Namrata is an artist-poetess and Bheem is an investment banker in New York.

B ring up her much-critiqued statement that a male child is essential and she pooh- poohs that as, "Never! I couldn't have said that..someone obvious- ly twisted my statement out of context." The Lady B in cool denims, strawberry lipstick plays around with her gold chain while con- versing. She's been married for 25 years and lived in London for over 20 years. Now, she wants to announce that she's about to set up and event and PR management company . "I would like to do this inde- pendently," she states. "If that doesn't work out, I could go in for a tie-up…I really have to check out the scene..I know everyone on the social circuit here even though I haven't been in touch with so many of my friends for ages." Now this may be a silly ques- tion..or maybe an uncomfortable one..but why doesn't she handle the PR of Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan? There's no recognis- able emotion on her face for a sec- ond or two..then she smiles happi- ly, "Oh, I would love to handle the PR of Amitabh and Abhishek..but that's if they would ask me to. You can't mix family with business." Right. An unexpected visitor lands up to meet her..at this point. It's filmmaker Govind Nihalani. They have a brief chat after which she goes on to talk of the paparazzi phenomenon. Con- trary to evidence, she believes, that the intrusion into the pri- vacy of celebrity lives is more intense in India than in the U K. "The libel laws there are much stricter.. here kuchh bhi chalta hai," she maintains. Sure, the Bachchan name can open doors for her but after entering it's "essential to prove your worth as a business person." It's pretty obvious that I'm not about to receive any new insights into Ramola Bachchan's personality, the Bachchan family or any mis- cellaneous subject. The best option for me now is to dart those rapid-fire questions and see how she fields them.. or doesn't. Wasn't your husband (Ajitabh) writ- ing a tell-all book which was sup- posed to reveal all kinds of secrets? No, my husband was never writ- ing such a book. Okay, every fam- ily has its ups and downs..things get sorted. Today Amitabhji and Ajitabh are shouldering two responsibilities..of looking after the arrangements for the wedding and after their mother. How would you describe your moth- er-in-law (Teji Bachchan)? She was very open and liberal- minded. It's so heart-ending her to see her in hospital..for so many months now. She is stable..she is recovering..I would like to see her back with us. Any thoughts on how to deal with ageing? You have to be graceful in your thoughts, you have to stop worry- ing about your looks..the mirror.. Amitabhji is the best example of ageing gracefully..and that's why he's the best actor in the country today . Which other actor do you like? Shah Rukh Khan, I've seen and loved all his films without exception. Now that the wedding's just a little more than a week away, have you met Aishwarya Rai and her mother Vrinda? Yes of course, I have. They're such elegant ladies.. Aishwarya Rai is the best match for Abhishek. Will Aishwarya Rai be the pucca Bachchan bahu, then? What! Is there such a notion? That question is best answered by Jaya, of course. I know there's much speculation about will she fit in..or not..which is so unneces- sary really. The Bachchans are the biggest family of the film industry..if they have chosen to keep the wedding low-key, it's their choice, really . ..The hotel's buzzing with a larg- er crowd, my interviewee has a thousand details to look after for a charity dinner..and so what impression do I leave with of Ramola Bachchan? She's a quali- fied lawyer yes..but yes it's never too late to PR.

Amitabh Bachchan considers Bollywood more creative than Hollywood

Bollywood mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan dismisses the notion that Indian films should aspire to win Oscars, saying that Bollywood was more creative than Hollywood.

India turns out about 1,000 films in 12 languages each year. No Indian film has ever won an Oscar, although 'Mother India' and Lagaan have been nominated.

Bachchan, who is currently visiting Britain to receive several awards, said that he did not believe an Indian film winning an Oscar was the "ultimate recognition for any great film" and added that it was offensive to suggest that.

"I do believe that Indian film has its own exhibition," Bachchan said, referring to the International Indian Film Academy's annual awards. "Whereas we respect the Oscars and what they are, our creativity is the best," he added.

Bollywood, which makes three times as many films a year as Hollywood, has captivated cinemagoers around the world with its musical extravaganzas.

Bachchan welcomed films that married Western and Indian cinema such as 2004's Bride and Prejudice – which starred his would-be daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai and which was a co-production featuring Indian and Western actors.

"Any kind of marriage is going to be good when creative interests are common," Bachchan said.

"I do believe that if the United Kingdom wants to make a film with India, there can only be benefits and vice versa."

Bachchan said that, although he had never appeared in any Hollywood film, he would certainly consider roles from the West.

Wedding invites out for Bollywood stars

MUMBAI, India -- Two of India's hottest movie stars, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, have sent invitations to their private wedding this month, a newspaper reported Thursday, adding to the hype over nuptials that have been kept strictly under wraps.

For weeks now the Indian media have been reporting that the couple will wed in a small private ceremony on April 20 at Bachchan's family home in suburban Mumbai, but the family has made no comment.

The wedding invitations were sent to a select few -- including industrialist Anil Ambani and his wife, Tina, filmmaker Karan Johar and actor Anupam Kher, The Times of India reported.

The card, embossed with two entwined As and delivered with a box of chocolate meringues, also invited guests to a pre-wedding party on April 18, the paper reported, citing a friend of the families.

Included in the card was a poem on new beginnings by Bachchan's grandfather and renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan, who died in 2003.

Bachchan, 31, and Rai, 33, have worked together in several movies. In their most recent collaboration "Guru," Bachchan plays a man from a small Indian village who works his way up to becoming a top industrialist, while Rai plays his supportive wife.

The two also starred in a period drama "Umrao Jaan," "Kuch Na Kaho" or "Say No More" and "Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke" or "Two and A Half Words of Love."

Rai, a former Miss World, is one of the most recognizable Indian faces abroad having starred in several commercials for cosmetic companies and has acted in more than 30 movies.

Bachchan comes from a famous Bollywood movie family -- his father, Amitabh, and mother, Jaya, are among India's best known actors.

Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles

India's commercial Bollywood movie industry is the only foreign cinema that still has a flourishing theatrical presence in the U.S. But like all popular screening circuits, this one categorically excludes certain kinds of material. The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, which kicks off its fifth season on Tuesday, aims to fill gaps in our understanding of the most robust and prolific film factory on Earth. A realistic depiction of ordinary life and culture, for instance, is not something you expect to find in the commercial realm, which in India as elsewhere tends to be escapist. IFFLA has some rich offerings in that area but not, curiously, in the documentaries that were available for preview. In attempts like Paromita Vohra's Q2P, which finds a feminist metaphor in the long lines outside women's restrooms in Mumbai, and Sanjeev Chatterjee's Dirty Laundry, nominally an account of the legacy of Gandhi's sojourn in South Africa that devolves into a string of activist talking heads, there is such a thick overlay of ideology that reality is shadowed rather than illuminated. In the artful best of the festival's independent-style fiction films, it's easier to look past the artist's preconceptions. John Jeffcoat's Outsourced is a crisp and precise cross-cultural comedy about a befuddled American functionary (Josh Hamilton) who travels to India to set up a call center in a small town; the setup may be hackneyed, but the details are vivid and surprising. Even more surprising is Rajnesh Domalpalli's beautifully crafted Vanaja, whose depictions of storytelling through music and of dance as a folk art form at the village level is nothing short of a revelation. (It will hit some Bollywood fans like a thunderclap — the origin story they never knew they were looking for.) Domalpalli's absorbing tale of a young girl who apprentices herself to the crabby old local mistress of the art form manages to sidestep most of the follow-your-dream clichs of the genre. The festival's well-programmed Bollywood by Night sidebar includes Yash Chopra's Deewaar (The Wall, 1975), one of the iconic "angry young man" films that made Amitabh Bachchan a star, and Shekhar Kapur's Mr. India (1987), a deep-dish family entertainment that is also a wry parody of Indian cinema's masala format. MAX to premiere Amitabh Bachchan festival

Sony Entertainment Television Asia's movies and events channel MAX is all set to run a month-long movie festival featuring Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

The festival is called 'Ab Tak Bachchan' and will run throughout May. MAX is hoping viewers stick with the channel after its successful broadcast of the Cricket World Cup in India.

Even though MAX has already telecast many Amitabh Bachchan movies in the past, these will now be shown on a daily basis as a part of the season - a first for the channel. Movie festivals on MAX have previously lasted for a week or two. 'Deewar', 'Don', 'Silsila', 'Agneepath', 'Laawaris' and 'Muqaddar Ka Sikandar'.

In India, the films will air Monday to Friday at 20:00, which will also mark a change to the start time of its primetime movie slot. Up until now primetime movies on the channel have aired at 21:00.

It is not yet known if the time change will affect UK viewers.

According to MAX marketing head T Gangadhar, the channel has up to 49 Amitabh Bachchan movies in its library.

Big B and Ashmit Patel roped in for a project

Ashmit Patel would be grinning from ear to ear. After all he has bagged an opportunity to be a part of the same project where Amitabh Bachchan too has an important role to play. Their association happens for the music album titled MERE MANN MEIN DHADKAN MEIN.

The two do not share any screen space together since Ashmit Patel is the lead man in the music video for the album while Big B is heard in the role of a narrator. The album is a unique experience in itself since it has poems by Ravindranath Tagore put to tunes.

The album has Indrajit Dasgupta lending his vocals while Ujjwal Chatterjee has directed the music video which also features Rituparna Sen as the lead actress.
