Some time back we had a thread on loris or lullabies which are fast becoming history in film music... In today's full blast 'high in energy, low on emotions' kind of music, "item numbers" are taking front seats and the other music forms are approaching towards extinction.... a real sad story. One such form is devotional music or bhakti sangeet which once upon a time had it's own proud place in Hindi films. With few exceptions here and there, this music form is rapidly loosing it's place..
Let's us use this thread to remember this important music form and to recollect the songs based on this form of music... songs that display our " bhakti" or the devotion to the almighty, to the parents and elders, to the great personalities...songs that teach us morals and values... songs that teach us how to be good human beings...
Talking about devotional music in Hindi films, the first one that comes to my mind is --
o duniya ke rakhawale, sun dard bhare mere naale...
Perhaps the greatest ever in the Hindi films sung by Rafi saab and composed by Naushad-ji from Baiju Bawara. Rafi saab sung so many memorable devotional songs. Another great from the same film --
man tadpat hari darshan ko aaj....
Shankar Jaikishen - Rafi gave us 2 great ones in Basant Bahar...
- duniya na bhaye mohe ab to bula le
- badi der bhai, badi der bhai, kab loge khabar more ram
Another Rafi saab's that is very dear to me...
- sukh ke sun saathi, dukh mein na koyi, mere ram, mere ram (Gopi)
....And who will forget Lata-ji and Jaidev's 2 classics from Hum Dono --
- Allah tero naam, ishwar tero naam
- Prabhu tero naam, jo dhyaye phal paye
And this one is perhaps the greatest one sung by Asha-ji
- Tora man darpan kahelaye re (kajal)
I can go on and on...
