Investigation underway into 'suspicious' death of Woolmer due to poison: PCB Spokesman

JAMAICA: The Spokesman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) P J Mir has said that the investigations are underway into 'suspicious' death of Pakistan team coach Bob Woolmer that reportedly occurred due to poison

Addressing a hurriedly called press conference he said, Jamaican police are treating the death of the Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer as "suspicious."

However, he said, there was no ban on movement of Pakistan players outside hotel.

Mark Shields, deputy commissioner of the Jamaican police said Pakistan team coach Bob Woolmer did not die a natural death but his death occurred in very mysterious and suspicions circumstances.

The reports said the circumstances in which Woolmer was discovered were "suspicious" from the start

Senior officials in Jamaican police confirmed that Bob Woolmer did not die a natural death but was murdered.

The police and PCB team in Jamaica confirmed that when autopsy took place, there were "strong indications" that it was murder, prompting authorities to announce that the results had been inconclusive.

Sources said that the PCB is upset over the news of the Woolmer homicide being splashed all over the media, saying it was against Jamaican law to give out information before Jamaican authorities did.

The fact that one of the world's most renowned cricket coaches was possibly murdered 36 hours after his team exited from the World Cup, would not only be a source of deep embarrassment for the PCB, but also have very serious implications on international cricket.

Additionally, the homicide conclusion opens the door to a host of possibilities as to the motive behind the murder - not the least of which is the alleged player-bookie nexus in Pakistan, which would have been dealt a heavy blow from the team's exit from the World Cup.

Pakistan cricket team members have also been questioned by police as to their whereabouts the time Woolmer was last seen alive. Police have in fact asked the team to stay back in Kingston for two days after their match with Zimbabwe so that investigations can continue unhampered.

Bob Woolmer was found on Sunday night (March 18, India time) in his hotel room unconscious and in a pool of vomit.

Pakistan team's manager Asad Mustafa, who commented that the circumstances in which Woolmer was discovered were "suspicious" from the start – not only was there vomit found, there were also indications that the coach had suffered from diarrhea, his blood sugar testing machine was found on the floor in the bathroom and there was blood on his cheek and eyes.

He also said there was no ban on movement of Pakistan players outside hotel.
Pakistan team will play match against Zimbabwe, he said.

Woolmer's death 'is suspicious'

The death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer is being treated as suspicious, a Jamaican police spokesman has said.

Mark Shields said there was sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the death.

The Pakistan team are now discussing whether to pull out of their World Cup match with Zimbabwe, a spokesman said.

Woolmer died on Sunday, aged 58, after collapsing at the team hotel in Jamaica, a few hours after Pakistan's surprise defeat by Ireland.

Mr Shields, deputy commissioner of the Jamaican police constabulary, said the death was being treated as suspicious.

He read a brief statement which said police now had "sufficient information to continue a full investigation into the death of Mr Woolmer, which we are now treating as suspicious."

Earlier, he said that the body could not be released until the pathologist had completed his examination.

When the investigation is completed, his body will be taken back to his home in Cape Town, South Africa, accompanied by team trainer Murray Stevenson.

Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Pervez Mir told a news conference that further investigations were being carried out by a toxicologist and a histologist (scientist who examines body tissue).

Mr Shields said: "I know that the scientists are treating it with the utmost urgency in order that we can hopefully repatriate the body to his family as soon as possible.

"I just know they are working as quickly as possible to provide the information that we need. I hope it's today but it could be tomorrow."

He added that it was quite normal for there to be delays over a post-mortem's findings and refused to speculate on the causes of the death.

But he added: "We would always treat any sudden death - even in the UK - as suspicious until we can prove otherwise."

Woolmer, who appeared in Tests for England during his playing career, was a known diabetic and there were reports he had recently complained of breathing difficulties.

His family say he had been suffering from stress and believe this may have brought on a heart attack.

Mushtaq Ahmed, who has taken over as coach for Pakistan's game against Zimbabwe on Wednesday, described the mood among the players as one of "total depression".

He said: "The loss of Bob Woolmer is the biggest blow in the history of the Pakistan cricket team. He was a father figure to all of us.

"There is a great vacuum because Bob had become part of the family and when you lose a member of the family one knows how bad it is. It is a very difficult time for all of us."

Mushtaq, who had been working alongside Woolmer as the team's bowling coach, added: "Bob was a great man who could forgive so much in spite of anything that happened.

"He also used to impart knowledge and was also such a good and kind human being.

"Bob was a great motivating factor for us, always trying to bring in new theories to improvise the game of cricket."

Team not in right mental shape after losing Woolmer

Pakistan don't want to play final game

The Pakistan team are reluctant to play their final match of the World Cup against Zimbabwe, scheduled for later today, according to Pervez Mir, the team's media manager. The match is inconsequential for Pakistan, who have been knocked out, but it is significant for Zimbabwe, who could qualify for the next round if they beat Pakistan and finish with a better net run-rate than Ireland.

Mir said the team was in no mental state to play following revelations that Bob Woolmer, the coach who died on Sunday, might have been murdered. He said he was going to discuss the matter with ICC officials and the local organisers.

Ireland tied their first match with Zimbabwe and are currently ahead on points and run-rate with one more game to go against West Indies on Friday. However, Zimbabwe are not out of contention after managing to keep West Indies in the field till the 48th over in their match on Monday.

The Pakistan players tried to put up a veneer of normalcy when it practised at Sabina Park on Tuesday, playing football and indulging in banter before heading for nets, but the latest development has shaken them.
