"For Months, Sam And Dean Winchester Have Hunted The Spirits And Spooks That Terrorize The Living. And they have also searched for their father, John. They've found ghouls aplenty. And - at last - they've found John. Now, father and sons set out to destroy the demon that murdered the boys' mother. But they'll have other battles to fight along the way: unearthly conflicts against fiendish foes ... and a all-too-earthly clash of self-reliant young men against an iron-willed father who believes he knows what's right for his boys. Turn out the lights and bolt the door. Here come the final 11 first year episodes of this critically acclaimed series that combines hot young stars, icy suspense, compulsive storylines and spectacular supernatural visuals to create an addictive witches' brew of thrills and entertainment."
The season 1 Volume 2 box set features the last 11 episodes (12-22) of the season:
"Faith","Route 666", "Nightmare", "The Benders", "Shadow", "Hell House","Something Wicked", "Provenance", "Dead Man's Blood", "Salvation","Devil's Trap".
In the past I was quite a fanof the X-Files. The X-files was the first programme I found to coverthe oddness of life, taking facts and fiction and nicely blending ittogether for our viewing pleasure. As time went on, the X-Files beganto make a mistake. It began to complicate matters. What started as asimple show telling a good 'ghost' story and making some urban legendspublic, began to drift off taking with it only those hardcore sci-fisoap fans who got lost in a mass of conspiracy and soap opera whereoften the plots were more about the love/hate affairs of the belovedcharacters than about the supernatural.
Years pass and then oneday I find 'Supernatural'. I was sceptical (ahem). Similarites arebound to be drawn elsewhere between the X-Files and Supernatural butthey stand apart, and here's why.
Supernatural follows the livesof two brothers who have been raised in the 'arts' of persuing thesupernatural. The brothers embark on a quest to drive all over the US,hunting down all traces of the supernatural they find, chasingcreatures and laying to rest ghosts with a car boot load of guns andgizmos, in the hope that the trail will ultimately lead them to thedemon who killed their mother.
The recap to each episode beginssome twenty years previously, and tells the story of John and Mary -the brother's parents. Mary puts a baby Sam to bed one night andretires to bed. Static on a baby monitor stirs Mary. She makes her wayto Sam's room to check him only to find John standing over the crib.John shushes her and Mary heads back towards bed thinking nothing ofthe situation.
Then the hall lights flicker. Mary stops to tapsthe light, confused. Downstairs she hears the sound of the TV. Shetakes a look and to her horror, sees John is actually asleep in thechair in front of the TV. Panicked, she rushes back to Sam's room, nownot knowing who the figure really was who was standing over his cribmoments before.
Awakened by Mary's screams, John too rushestoward Sam's room. Sam, she finds, is fine. Suddenly drops of bloodbegin to fall around the crib. John looks up to find Mary, blood-soakedand pinned to the ceiling. Flames explode around her across the ceilingand engulf her. John retrieves Sam and Dean and gets them safely out ofthe house. He turns back to try and save Mary, but it is too late.
And thus, the scene is set.
Each episode we find Sam and Dean arriving in a new town to investigatelocal odd goings-on as part of a supernatural trail and hunt down andput to rest the spooky and scary culprits by means of all methods fromholy water to shotguns. Supernatural unashamedly packs an urban legendor myth into each episode and that is exactly it's strength. Whilst wedo have an on going view into the life, love and motivation of the twobrothers (and AWOL father) in this disfunctional family unit, what weare really treated to throughout is a fantastical recreating of belovedurban legends, folk law, myths and old wives' tales spanning thecenturies, and isn't this just what we want?
Theseason 1 volume 2 box set physically is nothing special, that is, it'sno real collectors piece. The set comprises of a nicely decoratedcardboard sleeve which holds three slimline dvd cases. You won't findany special features, extended episodes, deleted scenes or artwork. What you get is a simple box set and the episodes. The only handy'feature' to the DVD's is the ability to turn off the recap at thestart of each episode. You'll know how tedious recaps get when you tryand watch a series of something and everytime you have to watch "Lasttime on...".
Supernatural dares to keep aminimal plot to set the scene and then leads us on what compares togood-old scary campfire ghost stories but with the aid of modernspecial effect visualisations to produce a great series.
Supernaturalis like X-Files minus the soap, meets Buffy with real special-effects(minus the annoying teenagers), with an extra measure of campfire ghoststories. It's for grown-ups, late at night with the lights off. Thereare scarier, more horrific things on TV, but nothing with better eeriestorytelling.
It is a good series I'd recommend to ex-X-Filefans or anyone who likes a bit of drama featuring the unknown, especially as the 'supernatural' elements are taken from real lifemyths and legends.Although the box set is basic, it does the job andgets you the episodes. It may be that a collectors box set appears fortrue converts one day, but this will more than cater for you until then.
Highly recommended.
