KARAN JOHAR
Profile
As a child, Karan Johar always dreamt of being famous. His father, Yash Johar was a top filmmaker, so Karan grew up amidst the company of Amit uncle and Jaya aunty, who were close friends of his parents. Like most star children, he too went for Hrithik and Abhishek's birthday parties where he met up with other kids, many of whom have grown up to become famous stars today. Kareena and Karisma Kapoor, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna, Aditya and Uday Chopra, Abhishek and Shweta Bachchan, Goldie and Shrishti Behl, Hrithik and Sunaina Roshan, Tusshar and Ektaa Kapoor were few of his childhood friends but they all drifted apart as childhood soon turned to adolescence.

When Karan was schooling at Green Lawns, he used to be a complete movie buff. However, having lived and studied in South Mumbai all along, he hardly had any filmi friends. He wasn't very proud when people came up to him and asked him if he was Yash Johar's son. At that time and in that side of the city, being associated with films wasn't something to be thrilled about. So he often denied any connection with the movies, insisting that his father was not a producer, but a businessman. But within, Karan was an ardent Hindi movie buff, who would rush home after school to catch his favourite movie on video. He had his own collection of the latest Hindi films and saw Yash Chopra's Silsila every single day. He loved trial shows and would often burst into tears when his parents refused to take him for preview screenings.

As Karan grew up, he realized that his love for cinema kept growing too, and when he was studying at H R College, he got friendly with Aditya Chopra, Yash Chopra's son. One day, Aditya called up Karan, wanting to narrate his gem of a story idea he had. That film was "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge". The next two months saw Karan working along with Aditya on the scripting of the film, till one day Adi asked him to assist him on the film. Karan, who had just finished his French course and was all set, to go get a degree in Mass Communications from Paris. But his passion for the movies made him change his mind and the rest is history.

While working on "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge", during the Switzerland schedule of the film, one day Shah Rukh suggested to Karan to direct his own film. That was how his debut "Kuch Kuch Hota Hain" was born. The film ended up, as one of the biggest blockbusters of all time and Karan was a superstar director before he realized it. For a teenager who grew up on the works of Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra, he was now a successful filmmaker himself. After that, Karan took a break for a year as good friend Adi was making "Mohabbatein". "Both Adi and me have decided that we will make films alternately. So, when he makes a film, I will be there with him at every stage and vice-versa", he said of his impressive decision. After Mohabbatein released, Karan announced his next venture, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum", which was the biggest multi-star cast film made to date. Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan with Kajol and Hrithik Roshan cast along Kareena Kapoor made Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Ghum the hottest movie of the decade. Since then Lady Luck has been exceedingly sweet to him. He has his own chat show as well. As they say some people have all the luck!

Karan Johar's tussle with the muscle!

The lad looks dapper in whatever he wears. Whether it's his cool kurtas and denims, or his high-power suits – he makes a good picture. And he makes no bones about admitting that he's fashion conscious and he loves being that way. These days he's been checking his weight too, not that he has much of it, but KJ wants to look like a lean-mean machine. And add some muscle to his body. He's works out whenever he can – sometimes at Yashraj Studios were he shoots his chat show episodes, and at times he just pops into Shah Rukh Khan's Mannat bungalow, which has a gym in there. All thanks to his trainer, Vrinda Mehta, who won't let him rest till she sees results. Well, we can almost hear her scream out to KJ – "Don't chat, just workout."

Karan Johar banega stylist

The secret is finally out — good friend Karan Johar will style SRK for IKshama Rao.

The news is that Karan Johar will be styling the look and outfits of ShahRukh Khan for the third season of Kaun Banega Crorepati. Several names were mentioned as possible creators of Khan's wardrobe, but who can do it better for him than his buddy Karan Johar?

Interestingly, at a press conference earlier this month to announce SRK as the new host of KBC, Khan was asked what his look on the show would be like. "I will have Duggu's (Hrithik Roshan's) looks from Dhoom 2," he had said.

As for the other much awaited TV show, Koffee With Karan, Samir Nair, COO, Star India Pvt. Ltd says, "We could have got the show on air earlier but since KBC is launching in January, we didn't want to crowd our channels with too many prime properties. So Koffee with Karan will go on air in February."

Karan Johar to design SRKs crorepati look

Bharti Dubey
[ 23 Dec, 2006 0018hrs ISTTIMES NEWS NETWORK >

MUMBAI: While Shah Rukh Khan is preparing hard at his office to don the new role of a quizmaster in Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), his buddy Karan Johar is busy designing the look the superstar will have on the show.

It's not for the first time that Johar will be styling SRK's look; he has styled the superstars appearance in his films like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Veer Zaara, Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

When contacted Johar said, "What is new in it? I have been designing his clothes and look for almost all his films. Besides, Shah Rukh Khan is one person who will look good in casuals as well as in formals. He can carry off almost anything."

The set for Kaun Banega Crorepati will be designed by Nitin Desai. Says a source in Star, "He has done it earlier. We have just dismantled the Nach Baliye set. It will take them at least a week or two to construct the KBC set".

Shah Rukh Khan will be shooting simultaneously for his home production Om Shanti Om and Kaun Banega Crorepati. Since both the sets are in Film City, the actor will be shooting for his film during the day and for KBC in the evenings. He will be shooting for 18 to 20 hours a day, an insider said.

Shah Rukh Khan has been roped in by Star for two seasons of 52 episodes. Shah Rukh Khans KBC will definitely bring in a new set of audiences, an insider said.

Shah Rukh Khan was approached by Star after Amitabh Bachchan declined an offer to host the show in its third season. Khan came to be seen as the only alternative after Amitabh Bachchan. The choice of Khan immediately generated interest and zing in the media world and the ad world.
