She was everywhere and topping every list. She was the number 1 actress from 97 to 99 as well.
It is almost impossible to imagine someone in a place like hers..at the top..at the centre of critical and commericial success to suddenly decline so much that she just loses it all and with in 3/4 years gets reduced to doing B grade horror movies like Baaz and tv serial on sahara one
What led to such a steep decline? Now even those who were no where near her in her prime like shilpa, raveena etc are all so much more relevant than her. Even Sonali bendre is more relevant than her now.
How did karisma lose work all of a sudden? She clearly wanted to work which is why she did Baaz and that TV serial which requires hours of shoot, so it is not like she chose to not work. She might have stepped back but everyone forgot her like she never existed, which must have been shocking even for her own self. Her career as a leading lady barely lasted for a decade. She saw solid highs but her lows were shockingly low and very abrupt.
Karishma was was bullied a lot, people calling her man-like. She also did not evolve skill wise as an actress and probably decided with the marriage to AB jr initially and then Kareena's debut that she didn't want to work 24/7 anymore, and so offers dried up because people did not think of her as an actress useful to continue on.
The role of the actress has rapidly become far more respectable now, and even though I think we're in the weakest generation acting-wise of top actresses so far, it is admirable how the likes of Deepika and Alia are now in a position where many people in regular times admire them, whereas being an actress in the late 90s/00s meant that people could easily disrespect you any second.
Aishwarya was the beauty so things were different for her, but even the likes of Urmila and even Bipasha were not really respected. Yes Bipasha is liked among Bollywood fans but the Amar Singh fake rumor that was planted against her is still used today. Urmila was made fun of because...RGV but she was a great actress which people know far too late.
Shilpa (and her husband) have a lot of friends who are helping her and Shilpa liked working all these years. She's so ambitious she went to Big Brother and came back the talk of the town. Raveena is married to one of the biggest ppl in Bollywood she's more cushioned than Rani. Can't really compare to Karishma.
If you see her on those dance shows it's obvious Karishma regrets how her career turned out. It's why Kajol is very fond of her despite the Ajay history, she also kind of set aside her career early, but Kajol got respectable family friendly films whereas Karishma had some crazy ones.
