Here are a few interesting IPL Changes introduced this year ----

March 26, 2022. The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will have 10 teams and there will be 74 matches, with each team having to play 14 matches. With the entry of two new teams, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT), the tournament is bound to get more interesting this year.

To add more to this, the Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) has introduced four new rules for the teams. From making changes in the Decision Review System (DRS), scheduling of matches in light of Covid-19, the BCCI has made new additions to the rules.

5 changes the BCCI made in IPL 2022--

From changes in the number of reviews taken in an innings' system to catch outs and run-outs, the BCCI has made new additions in the rules ahead of IPL 2022.

1. Rescheduling  of match due to Covid.

If a team fails to field playing XI (of which seven must be Indian) along with one substitute fielder, then the match will be rescheduled for later in the tournament. If rescheduling is not possible, then the matter will be referred to the technical committee. โ€œThe decision of the committee will be final and binding,โ€ said an IPL communiquรฉ.

This is a shift from the previous rule that the board will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this was not possible, the team deemed to have lost the match with the opponent was to be given 2 points.

2. 8 Reviews in a Match.

gettyimages-12664107_031522125912.jpg

The BCCI has also made changes in the DRS rules in IPL 2022. It has introduced eight reviews in a match from the earlier four. Earlier, each team had 2 reviews, which it could take in both the innings. In case of losing a review, the team was left with no review. But now, each team will have 2-2 reviews in an innings. This means a total of 8 reviews in a match.

3. NO CROSSOVER ON CATCH OUT

The BCCI has also endorsed the recent suggestion of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which said that in case of a catch out, the new batsman will have to take the strike even if the previous batsman crosses over to the other side while the ball is in the air.

A necessity of this sort was needed in IPL. It can change the outcomes of the game. In the  Semi-Final of IPL 2021, Delhi Daredevils lost the knock-out game to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Daredevils had turned the game towards itself in the final overs when it bowled out 6 KKR batsmen in a mere eight runs. The last over needed 7 runs off 6 balls and Ashwin had sent Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine to the pavilion while Rahul Tripathi, the explosive batsman, was at the strikerโ€™s end. When Narine was caught out by Axar Patel, he had crossed over to the other side and Tripathi was at the strike instead of Lockie Ferguson, who was the new batsman. Tripathi hit the six on Ashwinโ€™s balls and won the match for his team.

4. THE MANKADING EFFECT

BCCI has also said that Mankading would be treated as a run out in IPL 2022. The Mankading dismissal is when a bowler could dismiss the non-striker batter if the batter is out of the crease. Till now, the way of dismissal was treated as an unfair way but now it has been accepted by the MCC as a way of run out.

5. BREAK-UP OF A TIE

indian-premier-leagu_031522011807.jpg

The fifth change pertains to the tie-up of a match in a playoff or final where the winner is undecided. If there is a possibility where a super over canโ€™t take place, then the team which is higher on the points table will be declared the winner.

But in 14 years of IPL, 13 super overs have taken place and each time, a winner has emerged.

Out of these 5 changes, I like change number 3.  Yes, set batsmen unfairly used this cross over rule to take the strike and hit the winning runs on many occasions.

Cheers..

Ravindra Jadeja will lead Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming IPL 2022, after MS Dhoni, who has led the team since the first season of the tournament, in 2008 - bar the two years when the team was banned - announced his decision to step down from the leadership position. In a statement, the franchise said that "Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond".

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan said that Dhoni wanted the leadership "transition to be smooth" and felt Jadeja was ready to take up the mantle for the team, which won its fourth IPL title last year. Viswanathan said that Dhoni had announced the decision on Thursday at the team meeting before the squad left for training - the defending champions will play the tournament opener against Kolkata Knight Riders on March 26 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

"MS Dhoni was thinking about it," Viswanathan said. "He felt it is the right time to hand over captaincy to Jaddu [Jadeja]. He feels Jaddu is also in prime form of his career and it is the ideal time for him lead CSK. What will be good for the franchise must be [in the] back of his mind."

Jadeja, who has been with the franchise since 2012, will become the third player to lead the Super Kings side, after Dhoni and Suresh Raina.

Speaking to the Super Kings' social media team, Jadeja said, "Feeling good. At the same time, I also need to fill in big boots like Mahi bhai, [he] has already set the big legacy so I need to carry [that] forward. I don't need to worry too much because he is here so whatever I have a question to ask, I'll definitely go to him. He'll be my go-to person. He was and still he is today, so I'm not worried too much."

Viswanathan said that while Dhoni had not personally informed him of his decision in advance, it was not a surprise to the franchise, and they had discussed the subject - the succession plan - even before the 2021 IPL and had alerted Jadeja at the time. "He [Jadeja] has been talked to earlier. Even last year, there was a proposal. We knew he would be the best person to succeed MS."

For the past two IPL seasons, there had been speculation around Dhoni's future. Last November, at a function organised by Super Kings in Chennai, Dhoni had assured his fans that he would continue playing for the franchise for at least one more season.

Viswanathan reckoned that Dhoni was waiting for the opportune time, just as he had when handing over the reins of the Indian team to Virat Kohli. "It is similar to when he handed Virat the captaincy after having groomed him for a few years at international level. Similarly, he wanted the transition to be smooth."

Viswanathan added that the franchise had immense confidence in Jadeja's leadership. "Jaddu has the potential to do well for the franchise," he said. "[He is a] good all-round cricketer, playing his best, he can get the team around. And MS' guidance will always be there. This will be a good induction programme."

 ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Recognised as one of India's great all-format captains, Dhoni's leadership legacy at Super Kings is similarly phenomenal. After he led India to the title at the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, former Tamil Nadu captain, the late VB Chandrasekhar, had told Super Kings owner N Srinivasan about Dhoni's worth as a leader. Srinivasan had then asked Chandrasekhar, who was at the Super Kings table at the inaugural IPL auction, to acquire Dhoni at any cost.

Dhoni has, over the years, repaid that faith with interest. In the 213 matches in which he led Super Kings - in the IPL and the now-defunct Champions League T20 - there were 130 wins, 81 losses, and, crucially, six titles: four at the IPL and two at the CLT20.
