"Speak only that which will bring you honour"

Today, 19th November 2021, marks the 552nd birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The founder of the Sikh religion, Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first Guru. He was born in 1469 in Nankana Sahib (now part of Pakistan) and his birth anniversary is celebrated across the Sikh community.

A firm believer in the oneness of God and the idea that all individuals can form a strong connection with the Almighty through sincere prayers; Guru Nanak spent much of his life preaching people to serve one another, disregard the class and religious differences, live in harmony and promote justice for all. His teachings were collated together to form a sacred holy book called the Guru Granth Sahib.

On this special day, followers of sikhism are reminded of the 3 guiding principles of Sikhism and are encouraged to follow these throughout their lives. These include:

Naam Japana (remembering the Almighty all the time)

Kirat Karna (selflessly serving people)

Vand Chhakana (sharing with others)

As we take a step back to observe the world around us today, we see the basic teachings of humanity are somewhat lost. What better day than today to teach one another some important lessons to learn from Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji:

Honesty - Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached honesty to his followers citing how living an honest life brings one great joy.

Equality - Guru Ji taught us to believe we are all the creation of One God hence neither one of us is better than the other.

Stay away from Evil - Sikhism teaches its followers to live a life free from evil such as lust, greed and anger. For these evils destroy the purity of one's soul.

Stand up against Discrimination - Guru Ji was against all acts of discrimination and wanted his followers to believe the same.

In today's world, we experience prejudices and evil actions nearly everyday and while we may believe the goodness of one person makes no difference, that is far from the truth. If we begin doing our "bit" in reforming the society we live in, we will leave behind a legacy of love for all for our future generations.
