Almost all major actors have had their skin lightened or shown a shade or two lighter in photos and onscreen. Manoj Bajpai, Ajay, SRK, Kajol, Priyanka, Shilpa, Rani, Rekha etc all look fairer now. Rajinikanth, Shatrughan Sinha, Nawazuddin were dark skinned but even they are made to look lighter shade now.

I am surprised how people who already looked fair such as Aishwarya Rai, Manisha Koirala, Kareena Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan are also made to look even more light skinned now and look pale (especially in overzealous magazine shoots and some films).

This colonial hangover and fetish to look whiter than Whites has only increased in recent decades.

I sometimes feel people adored little Jugal Hansraj in Masoom too precisely because he had fair skin, light eyes, pinkish glow on cheeks and red lips and looked more like a foreign born kid.

This is a country where people judge features and skin color of newborn babies too or feed haldi milk to pregnant women hoping they will give birth to fair babies. So I am not surprised at this urge to rush towards anyone with light skin and consider them epitome of beauty.

People link skin color to caste, region and class as well. Skin color is almost a prestige issue here.

But I also think that nowadays looks don't matter
