I came to know of this soap during kartik - naira period because of a relative raving over mohsin khan. I used to listen to the story and was not much impressed. After sirat's entry following naira's death somehow I happened to watch a few episodes and it intrigued me that rather than bringing about some memory loss or rebirth kind of story in the general tradition of indian dramas they were actually going to pursue the story with a totally new character. And as it progressed I really was hooked. Now, since then I have watched the old kaira story as well and read up on all the comments, posts and discussions on yrkkh S1with naitik-akshara and S2 of kaira. While most of these are just glorified praises of kaira and shivin here I found some intelligent analyses of the drama and healthy criticisms, especially of naira's mahanta and character-centricity. So its really surprising that even those who are not naira bhakts hate sirat's character so much. I find the famous kaira romance very bland and nothing more than a pre-teen romantic fantasy. But the kartik-sirat track seemed a more realistic and interesting story. Isn't this concept of a man who has suffered such a tragedy of losing his beloved wife, then forced to interact with someone who he is initially very uncomfortable with but later begins to genuinely like and forms a friendship with that grows into love a much nicer story? Mohsin's portrayal of the more mature and subdued kartik was so good and the subtlety and nuance he brought to the developing romance with sirat was really amazing. Even shivangi improved in this track I think. She too did a good job of portraying sirat and the different kind of romance. Why is this story so unappreciated? People seem to object to the brash and quarrelsome attitude of sirat but then that is who she was. That was how her deprived childhood had shaped her to be, she was constantly called upon to defend her existence. But she grows to be a decent and compassionate human being despite which is what should be appreciated about her. And that is what kartik admires in her too. I think all the unhappy kaira and naira fans are just so frustrated with the fact that this character, who they were hoping would turn out to be naira with memory loss and they will once again be able to witness the great kaira milan, is actually a totally different person, that they just don't want to see below the surface.
Ofcourse there were parts that were not properly written and developed and were rushed. And so many plot holes too in the story timeline. Like the entire story would have developed over a year and more but without proper pointers in the show it came across as if kartik fell in love with another woman within months of his wife's death. How can that be? It took 2 to 3 months atleast for them to come to the decision of the marriage of convenience then atleast 6 months with Ranveer starting from when he comes back to when his illness starts and the 3 months after that till his death. Then there was the six month leap. But because these details were not properly dealt with kartik became some shallow and fake person apparently. They should have shown more of kartik 's inner struggles when he begins to develop feelings for sirat but that was just reduced to a by-the-by during his proposal scene. Also people don't seem to take into account how relationships and bonds between two persons can be forged faster when they live through some shared crisis like kartik and sirat did.
I really think that was a unique and original story that the makers started but because of the virulent backlash, now they have just gone back to showing an old, worn-out, tiresome but tried and tested story of the good and evil sister falling for the same man. What bothers me even more is that the viewers are so biased in their hatred for sirat that even from time of her birth they bashed Aarohi and kartik for fathering her and are now very much satisfied that she is going to be the evil one and Naira's daughter will be mahaan like her. I mean what is this regressive thinking? A Bengali drama remake moreover! But apparently this is what the public wants and rightly gauging them the makers have given them what they wanted after their unsuccessful attempt to interest them in a different kind of story.
