A Chance??
The crescent moon was shining bright in the midnight sky, the silence of the night stretched afar and silent was the girl sitting in her room with tear strained eyes.
She was broken from inside with no one around to support her, understand her, she felt herself a possession whom everybody was just trying to win and in this was her mother too whom she loved so dearly and her man, whom she considered the reason of her misery.
It was just a few hours back she returned from Tulsipur, that used to be her village, the place where she had spent some precious years of her life, the place where she got immense respect once now considered her an enemy ready to give all brutal punishments to her.
And her home, Krishnanagar, here everyone is ready to manipulate her to acquire their own benefit. No one is ready to listen to what her heart wants and all are just ready to push their decision on her and what hurt her most was the promise her mother asked from her.
She was the same mother of hers who wouldn't stop praising the man and herself asked her umpteen times to respect him, worship him, listen to him and now she herself was asking her to forget him. The man who literally sacrificed his life her.
Bondita was now so agitated with this 'dushmani' that was leading everyone to destruction and suffering the most was her Sakha babu, no he is now Barrister babu for her. And tears fell from her eyes as she sat on her bed hugging her knees as the moments spent with him flashed in her mind.
But her trance broke as she heard knock on her door and thinking who might be in the midnight hours she got up and asked softly, "koun hai??" and then she heard muffled voice of her sister, "didi mein, darwaza khol"
And Bondita opened the door and Tapur entered abruptly closing the door behind her and looked around closing all the windows and then she headed to Bondita's wardrobe pulling a saree from it and hell confused with her actions Bondita now asked her, "kya kar rahi hai tu??"
But Tapur shushed Bondita moving towards the window that opened to the outside and started tieing the saree on the rod and Bondita gasped with her action and asked her shocked, "tu bhagne wali hai Tapur" and the girl looked at her sister wide eyed and then gestured her to look down and as Bondita leaned a little, she was stupefied looking at the person and whispered, "Barrister babu"
And Tapur nodded her head tieing the saree tightly gesturing Anirudh to come up who stealing glances all around held the end of the saree as he tried to climb up.
But Bondita's mind went blank with the events happening around and she just gazed at the window in an expressionless face. When her eyes met with the person who was looking at her holding many uncanny emotions in his eyes.
The sound of the closing of the window brought them out of their trance and Tapur looked at Bondita as she said,"darwaza band karde didi.."
But Bondita was too much in herself that she failed to acknowledge Tapur's words and Anirudh said slowly, "mein kar deta hun" and Tapur nodded her head as she moved out and heard the thud behind her, heaving a sigh of relief.
She was returning from her Sumati Kaki's room giving her medicine when her eyes fell on a shadow behind the pillars of their verandah and moving she was shocked to find Anirudh standing there and uttered looking at him, "Barrister babu aap yahan???" Anirudh got startled and was scared of being caught when Tapur asked, "aap Bondita didi se milne aaye hain??" and Anirudh nodded his head realising that the girl is no harm as he spoke now, "woh yahan tak toh chupke agaya par Bondita ka kamra konsa hai samajh nehi araha hai.." And Tapur smiled as she guided him down to Bondita's window and gestured him as she whispered,"yehi hai Bondita didi ka kamra..aap yehi intezar kijiye mein upar jake apki madat karti hun.." And Anirudh nodded his head.
Being caught up with the dushmani he had never got a chance to have a conversation with the members of Das family and just to clear his doubt then spoke softly, "tum Tapur ho naa??" and she nodded her head saying, "ji Bondita didi ke Sakha babu.." and they both laughed recalling the memory of past.
Bondita was still standing in the same position when Anirudh inched closer to her and whispered, "Bondita.." and it brought her back to reality and this time she glared him as she said, "aap yahan kyu aaye hain Barrister babu??" and in a mocking tone she said, "kahi mujhe agwa karke kaashi toh nehi bhejne aaye hain na??"
And Anirudh closed his eyes with such accusation of hers but then determined he opened his eyes boring her with his gaze as he spoke,"tumhe agwa karne nehi walki dushmani khatam karne ayaa hun mein Bondita" and teary eyed he continued,"ab nehi jheli jati mujhse ye sab..bahut hua..Khrishnagar aur Tulsipur ka nehi pata lekin Anirudh aur Bondita ke bich ab sirf dosti ka rishta hoga.."
And cutting him Bondita asked, "konse Anirudh aur Bondita ki baat kar rahe hain aap Barrister babu?? Aur kaisi dosti?? Jahan tak mein janti hun Barrister Anirudh Roy Choudhury aur Barrister Bondita Das sirf Deenpur Court ke do barristers hai aur kuch nehi.."
The Barrister Babu and the way she was calling him Barrister Anirudh Roy Choudhury hurt him to the core, he surely wanted to hear this name from her mouth but definitely not like this but still trying to pacify her, he held her palm in his and said,"Bondita esi baatein mat karo..akhir ek mauka toh do apne Sakha babu ko.." but not listening she tried to free her hand from his hold and he in return tightened his grip. And she uttered slowly, "nehi..."
And Bondita closed her eyes but then jerking her hand she snapped at him,"kya chahte hain aap??" And Anirudh whispered,"dosti.." and then he turned his gaze away from her clutching the wooden pole of her bed as he continued, "mein jina chahata hun Bondita, wahi Anirudh Roy Choudhury banke.. thak chuka hun mein ye Barrister babu ka mukhota pehnte pehnte.. Ab nehi hota mujhse ye, nehi sambhal pa raha hun dil pe ye bojh.. Janti hun dushmani chuna maine khun ke badle khun..Gandhiji ke raha pe chalne wala Anirudh Roy Choudhury ne bandook pakda.. Par mein bhatak gaya tha Bondita aur mujhe sahi raha dikhane wala bhi koi nehi thaa.. aur mein behek gayaa isme..8 saal se ji jarur raha tha lekin jinda nehi thaa mein.. Haar raat dil aur dimag ke bich jung hota tha kyuki mujhe pata tha mein galat kar raha hun par sab kuch sahi karne kliye bhi toh koi nehi tha mere paas.." And then he turned towards her as tears were gushing out from both's eyes.
Bondita understood him but still she was upset and bringing everything that she held inside she stated,"aur mein sab kuch sahi karne gayi thi aapke paas..aapko muskurana sikhane gayi thi mein, aapka saath dene gayi thi mein lekin aapne kya kiya?? Pyaar pane gayi thi..lekin aapne mujhe nafrat karna sikha diya" and she turned and her eyes fell on their reflection in the mirror and she clutched the edge of the dressing table with her palms and lowered eyes closing them may be fighting with with her inner turmoil. She definitely didn't expected such confrontations with him but she couldn't help to bring infront how his behaviour has hurt him.
And the words pyaar pane gayi thi lekin aapne mujhe nafrat karna sikha diya was ringing in Anirudh's ears as he remembered her confession in the hut. And he wondered did she expected him to love her back?? And he got reminded of all her actions as Vaijyanti and Bondita and the way she looked at him. And Anirudh's heart skipped beats as the realisation dawn upon him and he found the difference in both's love. He surely loved Bondita but not the way she loved him.
His heart was beating rapidly in his ribcage as he moved towards her unknowingly and stood behind her eyeing their reflection on the mirror and it did something to his heart, a unknown sensation that he hadn't felt in years. And automatically his hands moved where her palm lied and he clutched them slowly and Bondita opened her eyes and she shivered seeing their proximity in the mirror as their eyes met in the mirror and she could see something in his eyes, his eyes was trying to tell her something that she failed to decipher.
And not breaking the eye lock Anirudh slowly moved his hands up brushing his fingers on her skin as he clutched her arms from behind and leaned a little, his chin was only in a thread gap away from her shoulder and Bondita could feel her cheeks burning and Anirudh slowly whispered,"ye pyar ke bich mein nafrat nehi asakti kabhi nehi.." and his eyes teared up as he spoke with a yearning, "duniya ke sare dukh jhel sakta hun par tumhara nafrat nehi Bondita..ek akhri mauka do na yeh pyar ko.. Baas ek mauka aur.." and then he rested his chin on her shoulder as a drop of tear fell from his eyes and he spoke in a mere whisper again, "mujhe tumhare pyar ki zarurat hai Bondita.."
And this was it for the girl, she turned towards him and cupped his face in her hands and said softly, "Sakha babu.." and the next moment Anirudh found himself caged in her arms with her hands clutching his back and her head resting in the crook of his neck. And he too wrapped his arms around her felling her soft hairs below his hand and his lips curved in a smile as his eyes fell on their reflection in the mirror.
