In 1994, when Aishwarya Rai was preparing to compete in Miss India competition, she spread the news that she had won 1991 International Supermodel Contest organized by Ford which earned her the proposal to feature in the 1991 American edition of Vogue.
According to the news released by Aishwarya: "In the year 1991, at the age of 17, Aishwarya Rai's friend forced her to enter the prestigious Ford Supermodel Contest. As expected, Aishwarya won the contest and also won the Tulips Miss Super Vivacious prize, which was part of the same contest."
However, when organizers of the Ford Supermodel Contest found out that Aishwarya has been lying about winning the competition, they released the following statement:
"Ford, the world's leading model agency, is set to make its mark in India. But Miss World need not apply. Aishwarya Rai is just not tall enough. There is no contract as she is too tiny for us, according to the agency's scout, Dominique Caffin, who was in Bombay for Ford's Supermodel of India contest."
Daniela Benavente from Chile won 1991 Ford Supermodel Contest.
Why did Aishwarya lie that she had won a competition when she never even applied for it? Even if she had applied for it, she would not have been selected to participate because according to Ford, she was too tiny to be a supermodel.
Aishwarya still says that she won the 1991 Ford Supermodel contest and regularly mentions it in every intro of her that is published in print and social media even today.
