Prologue

"uncle.. Uncle, please save me, meri family Zabardasti meri shaadi kara rahi hai, please muje bacha lijiye" she pleaded.

The man asked the other person on call to hold and turned around to find a girl dressed in a red bridal dress. She was panting heavily and her face was stained with tears. He looked behind her to find a group of people screaming a girl's name. Though they were far behind he could see the colour fading from the girl's face as she heard the voice.

Without wasting a second, he quickly guided her to his car and drove away.

When assured they were at a safe distance, the man spoke up, "tumhe darr nahi laga ki aise ek anjaan par tumne bharosa kar liya"

"iss samay par muje sirf uss shaadi se..uss..uss ghar se... kisi bi tarah bachhna tha...aapne meri madad kari..vahi..vahi mere liye bohat hai" she replied, trying to calm her shivering self.

The man looked at the girl's condition. He could say that she was not older than 20. He debated with his inner self what to do. It was almost midnight, should he inform the police station? Or should he just ask if she has any other plan?

"Tumhara koi dost..ya koi..tum kahan jana chahti ho?".. He didn't know how to voice his question.

" mujhe kahi bhi le jayie, bas Kapurthala se dur" she replied looking outside.

The man nodded. Now what? ---Chandigarh?

*****

The gate to Sabharwal residence opened and the watchman gave a salute. The man nodded and pulled the brakes. After getting out of the car, the man instructed the security to keep a strict check and to not allow any stranger inside the premises. He then guided the girl towards the main entrance. Her head was bent and she followed him like a doll.

The man rang the bell and was welcomed by his better half  "arey Shaan aagye aap..." and she trailed off looking at the girl beside him. She looked at Shaan with questioning eyes to which he gestured that he will speak about it later.

When they settled in the living room, Shaan started "Aastha, yeh ladki.. Kya naam hai tumhara?"

"Anokhi" she replied in a slow whisper.

"Mai phone par baat karne ke liye car se neeche utra tha, tab anokhi aay mere paas madad mangne. Iske parivar wale zabardasti iski shaadi kara rahe the toh yeh unse bachna chahti thi. Ab aisi halat mei itni raat ko akele ni chor sakta tha toh saath le aya" he explained and Aastha nodded.

She glanced at anokhi's face which was ruined due to tears and smudged makeup. Her tresses were pinned in a bun and some strands were tied untidily behind her ears. She was trembling and trying to cover herself with the pallu.

"Anokhi..." she called softly

"ji.. Ji.." Anokhi almost jumped

"arey... Daro matt.. Aao mere sath chalo. Change karke thoda rest karlo, hum dekhte hai ki kaise tumhari madad kar sakte hai. Tum tension matt lo. " Aastha assured and took her hands to lead anokhi to the room which was upstairs.

*****

Aastha switched on the lights to reveal the bedroom, which seemed to be rarely used. She opened the wardrobe while anokhi stood at the threshold.

"arey bahar kyu khadi ho? Aao andar aao." As said she stepped inside and Aastha handed her a bag.

"ismei mere college ke time ke kuch suit hai. Ho sakta h tumhe aajae. Yeh change karlo, mai tab tak kuch khane ke liye bhijwa deti hu. " saying so she left.

Few minutes passed and anokhi stood at her spot like a statue, clutching to the bag of suits. Her mind was completely blank. Suddenly, she felt nauseous and hurriedly scanned the room for the bathroom and ran inside tossing the bag on the bed.

****

Anokhi splashed water on her face, trying to somehow revive her inner self but failed miserably. She slowly pulled up to look in the mirror and her eyes blinked continuously before regaining the focus. The makeup was almost gone and her wet hair strands which were tucked behind the ear now covered her cheeks. She traced her face, the jewellery and her mehendi in a daze,...is this really me? Her conscience questioned.

Shrugging out of the trance, anokhi again started to splash water on her face, craving for some relief. She didn't realise when tears got mixed up with the water and she started crying...crying hard. She wanted to scream, but no voice came out. Her hands reached out for support of the gate but her legs felt weak and as a result, she fell to the floor. Anokhi tried to get up but she started losing control of her body and in no time she was struggling to breathe. It felt like she would die any second...and at that moment, it did look like the easiest escape to her,... from everything.

But God had other plans. At the right time, Aastha entered the bedroom with dinner and was shocked to see her state. She immediately made anokhi sit on the bed and gave her some water. She tried to calm anokhi down by embracing her in a warm hug, whispering that she was safe and nobody could harm her. When her cries subsidised into sobs, Aastha helped her change into one of the suits while anokhi stood still and responded like a dummy. She only perceived that somebody was with her....and she was still alive.

Aastha tried to feed her dinner but to no avail. Giving up, she made anokhi lie down on the bed and caressed her forehead, requesting her to sleep. But anokhi didn't budge ..or maybe her mind was not able to process the voice and care. Her eyes were focussed on the ceiling fan and Aastha felt miserable seeing her state. After a few minutes, Aastha decided to leave the room and give some space to her. She hoped that anokhi would be in a position to speak in the morning.

"Please light off matt kijiye" anokhi managed to say. Aastha nodded and went closing the door behind.

Sleep was far away from anokhi's eyes. Though her eyes were tired and the body pained but her mind was overactive. On a loop, it replayed all that happened in the past week till the time she landed here. She didn't know what she would do next, but she was relieved that she had managed to escape the "hell".

****

Aastha and Shaan were discussing how to tackle this sensitive issue and were firm on not involving police in it as it would be a danger to the reputation of the girl.

"shaurya kahan hai?" Shaan asked.

A guy in a white shirt and black pants entered the dining area, whistling and playing with his car keys

"itni late kahan se aa rahe ho?" Shaan asked

"dad kal graduation ka result aya tha isliye party karne gya tha aahir orr Yash ke saath" shaurya replied, making himself comfortable opposite Aastha.

"acha suno.. Vo.." Aastha started to tell him about the guest.

"mom please abhi muje college ki koi baat nahi karni.". Shaurya replied annoyed.

"nahi shaurya ek baar apni mom ki baat toh sunlo"

"dad, muje pta hai ki koi bi conversation ho.. Mere career par hi khatam hogi. So please, excuse me. Kal baat karenge. Goodnight! " and he almost ran off to his room.

Aastha started to go after him but Shaan stopped her, and asked to talk about it tomorrow since it was quite late now.

When shaurya was about to open the gate of his room, his eyes fell on the light coming from the adjacent room.

"yeh lights kyu onn hai guest room ki? zaroor koi servant safai karke band karna bhool gya hoga." and he started to go towards the room.

I felt pretty bad for Anokhi, shattered like anything. Plus glad that Shaan & Aastha are 'normal' parents of Shaurya. Eager to know more... 😊
