Dear Varun,

I understand the pressures of being an A list male star- you have to constantly pick masala crowd pleasers. I get all of this. But you gave some of the most promising performances from a star kid that I had seen in those years, from Badlapur to October and even Humpty Sharma. When can we see you get back to that form?

Please stop taking advice from your dad. You were doing great before. Even if you have to choose Masala films- can we see more Dhoom and less Judwa?

Think about it please.

Who else would do a film with a has been like David Dhawan?

A mediocre looker and actor like Varun would never have been able to break into Bollywood. He only did due to his father. Now he's simply returning a favour to his father.

Also after seeing a lot of flops recently, Varun must be thankful that this film released on OTT, so no one can term it a flop or a hit. Given how shitty it is, it wouldn't have worked at the BO.

Pre-SSR suicide, it would have been a huge hit.

Varun is someone who has limited skills. He's not great at comedy, his comic timing is off. He goes overboard and OTT to compensate for these basic skills. He's not the best at masala either, no matter what people say.

He hasn't yet found a formula tailor-made to suit him like Tiger has action and Ayushmann has the social comedy genre.

Badlapur worked not because of him, but because Sriram Raghavan was doing what he does best -- concocting a thriller from raw, edgy elements. October didn't work and that was the end of Vraun's experimenting.

Also, he doesn't have that kind of stardom to make a film work regardless of content.

Its really SOS for Varun when his masala movie ain’t working anymore which his team and himself made him look like he is a crowd puller and even better than the two R‘s.

Maybe the next time he shouldn’t brag about that.

it’s his own fault cause after his experiments he wanted to cash again on being bankable through makeing some masala. I think that other dance movie didn’t also turned out like he wished.

Let’s hope he finds a director who will give him a hit cause kids already shifted to tiger.

It's tough to get exact numbers of viewership on OTT platforms- there's a lot of leeway and scope of claims. But this wasn't even my point- I'm sure if it had released in theatres it would have done well- but a person who showed so much promise in the beginning (I know y'all disagree but I do think he carried October on his shoulders- it takes talent) it'll be sad if he never grows it. What did Kalank, ABCD or Judwa add to his career? October even at its most flop- really really did. I'm not saying he shouldn't focus on his position at the box office- but if a person has more to offer- they do end up having a longer and more sustainable career. The era of Salman is coming to a close anyway.

NAnd now going forward there's a good chance that viewing habits and nature of stardom has changed forvever- sirf masaala films se kaam nahi chalega- it'll have to be a balance of both.

Wondering how they know it’s breaking records on OTT 😆 Every movie with an A lister it’s breaking records on OTT. they are dumb to make people wanting to believe them when the platforms only give away if its trending or Netflix haveing top 10.

Couldn't agree more with the bolded part. But Varun never found that balance, or maybe he just doesn't want to attain it? He seems to be someone who is enamored with box-office results, rather than critical acclaim. If you see where he's coming from, he seems to strongly subscribe to the belief that masala films = what audiences want.

Ironically, it's not masala films but films like Badlapur and October which have given him that respect.

I agree with you. But why would he change his philosophy when the same audience makes trash like Judwaa 2 a hit and ignore quality films like October and Badlapur? The latter gave him respect and credibility as an actor but the former gave him success and thereby extended his shelf-life

I do agree that he is OTT and unbearable in his father's movies. However I have a different opinion about his comic timing. He had quite a way with his witty repartee with Alia in the two Dulhania movies. Dialogue delivery rather than antics seem to be his strength. Kalank was a problematic movie in many respects. However I loved his scenes with Madhuri -especially the diagalogue-less scene where he gets insulted in public while his mother witnesses his humiliation. Blame in his eyes and guilt in hers. I couldn't find any faults with his performance in Sui Dhaaga. The climax was weak. And while I agree that Sreeram Raghavan deserves credit for molding him to be a creditable actor, he proved to be an apt pupil. Why else would Sreeram cast him again in his next movie? After the success of Andhadhun he could get anybody. I think Varun has a long way to go and should definitely choose better movies (No more Remo, Prabhudeva or his family's films) he's the best of the new lot since Ranbir Kapoor debuted.
