TS - The Ghost of Past
Today was a very dull day for Dr. Neil Oberoi. Being a psychiatrist and psychologist he never suffers from boredom as he enjoys his work very much. From childhood he was sure that he would become a psychiatrist. He loves to read people’s behavior and their mind. His education and training offers him the rare gift of look into people’s mind and their thought process. He likes to explore their inner demons and little secrets which they hide behind their facades and search for the solution of their problems. But today even he couldn’t escape the monotonous routine day and wanted an early escape from clinic. “Ria, Please cancel all the remaining appointments for today. I am leaving early today.” Neil asked his receptionist.
“Sir, I’ll reschedule all of them but there is one appointment of Mr. Khurana. They had asked for urgent appointment…remember?” Ria reminded him. “Oh yes! Mr. Khurana and his daughter, the case referred to me by Dr. Mehta.” Neil remembered. “Dr. Mehta is my senior and family friend. I cant refuse patient referred by him.” He thought then told his receptionist to line up this one appointment as his last for today.
At the schedule time Mr. and Mrs. Khurana came with their daughter. “May, I come in?” Mr. Ashok Khurana asked. “Ya, come in.” Neil said as he looked up to him. Ashok Khurana and his wife Babita came in. “Dr. Mehta told me that your daughter is the patient….whats her name….yes…Mini…right? But I don’t see her with you. Where is she?” Neil asked as he checked the file of Mini Khurana for details.
“She is waiting outside. Dr. Mehta has briefed you about her right? She is skeptical to meet new person doesn’t matter even if he is the doctor. We have to assure her everytime that the person is ok then only she agrees.” Babita explained her daughter’s condition. “She was fine in her childhood…just like any other normal kid. On her 9th birthday we were having a party at our house. She was playing with her friends when suddenly she went missing. We searched her everywhere and after two hours found her unconscious in the basement of our house. When she gained consciousness we asked her what happened but she didn’t say anything. She looked terrified by something then after lots of persuasion she said that she was playing hide and seek with her friends and was hiding there so that nobody could search her then she didn’t remember what happened to her afterwards.” Ashok Khurana explained in details.
“We thought may be she was scared of darkness or something like that and would forget this incident but after that she changed drastically. My cheerful, confident, vivacious daughter turned into introvert, scared and almost coward girl. She stopped interacting with family members and friends even stopped going to school. When we tried to send her forcefully she suffered from panic attacks. Having no other option we have to resort to home schooling. We thought that this was the limit but she proved us wrong when one night she came running into our room screaming in fear. When we asked what happened to her. She replied that she saw a ghost in her room.” Babita replied.
“What? A ghost? Hmm…now that’s something interesting.” Neil thought as he finally found the interesting new challenge he was looking for. “Since then she mostly stays at home, doesn’t have any friends, have trust issues and whenever we try to force her into something like going out, meeting people she gets panic attacks and again says that she has seen a ghost….the Mr. J.” Ashok said further.
“What? She has actually given name to that ghost?” Neil asked getting more intrigued by the minute. “Yes, She says that he told her his name and ask her to stay hidden and quiet if she wants to live.” Babita added further.
“Over the years we have tried many doctors….treatments after treatments….lots of therapies….but to no avail….she just refuses to go through whole treatment, her condition worsens and after a time doctor himself gives up. So we kinda lost hope and stopped even trying. But now, she is all grown up and it will going to affect her future if she remains like this….how will she opt for higher education, get married, have normal life if she doesn’t comes out of this self imposed restraints.” Ashok shared his worries.
“We have convinced her with difficulty to visit you. We have come here with many hopes. Please help us.” Babita requested. “Ok..ok Mrs.Khurana. I will try my best but how will I help without seeing Mini? First bring her here.” Neil replied. Babita nodded and went outside. She came with Mini. Neil looked at her. A young girl of hardly 21-22 years but the carefreeness, the energy, the insouciant nature of a young girl was completely missing and in its place there was grave seriousness, dull and insipid undertone in her personality. The dark circles under her eyes could not be missed. “Hmm…may be suffering from insomnia.” Neil noticed her and made a mental note. Ashok and Babita made her sit in front of Neil.
“Thank you for briefing me about her. Now you can wait outside.” Neil said to Mini’s parents and noticed how she gripped her mother’s hand. “Needy and emotionally dependent.” Neil made another observation. “Doctor, We told you that she is not comfortable in being alone with stranger.” Ashok reminded him. “I remember that Mr. Khurana. But how I am supposed to treat her if I don’t get to talk to her uninterrupted.” Neil answered. “But she wont let us go. We have to be here if you want to talk to her or else she will get panic attack.” Ashok reasoned. “See, Mr. Khurana, the relationship of patient and doctor is based on trust. Patient need to have that trust if he/she will disclose her deepest darkest secrets and problems with a doctor…then only it will work. If you people will stay here then I’ll not be able to form that connection….may be that’s the reason the other doctors failed previously to diagnose the problem.” Neil explained.
“But…how..?” Babita started when Neil got an idea. He suggested to talk to Mini in his therapy room while he let Ashok and Babita stay in his cabin only. There was a mirror partition between both the rooms. “Ms. Mini, we will be here in this room. You don’t need to panic as you can see your parents through this mirror and if you feel scared or uncomfortable then you can press this bell. They will come for you immediately. This way both of our purpose will serve.” Neil explained and Mini’s parents convinced her somehow for the idea.
Neil took Mini in therapy room and asked her to relax. Mini was constantly looking through the mirror towards her parents. So Ms. Mini, tell me something about yourself.” Neil asked. But Mini didn’t even look at him. “Mini, tell me about your favourite things…your favourite movies, colors, hero…etc.” Neil asked again to start a conversation but again Mini didn’t even look at him let alone answering him. "She is a tough nut to crack." Neil thought and sighed.
“Mini, I have heard you see a ghost. Is it true?” Neil asked as he thought of taking direct approach to communicate as indirect approach was not working. He saw Mini became stiff at its mention. For the first time she looked at his direction and nodded her head in yes. “Really? When you see him? How he is like?” Neil asked further happy that she at least started to communicate. Mini raised her hand towards him and pointed at his back. “I see him now. He is standing right behind you.” She replied.
