Chapter 4: A Small World Indeed!

Prerna needed a time out. This was all too much. “Excuse me,” she said getting up. She needed some air. All those past emotions were creeping up into her heart.

Rishabh watched Prerna walk out. He sighed. This is not how he had imagined they would meet again. There was so much he wanted to say. So much he wanted to express but all this was fudging with his brain. Anurag hid his face in his hands. What an idiot I am! Why did I have to call Rishabh? I could have done this alone. Now Prerna must be feeling so awkward. And what was with all the unnecessary panic. She is just a beautiful girl who I could get to know better.

“Bro.” Rishabh said with a straight face. “What happened to saying no?”

Rishabh needed all this to get over immediately. Anurag was in UK when he had met Prerna. He hadn’t gotten a chance to tell him everything and now..

“I don’t want to say no.” Anurag said looking at his friend. “I want to get to know her.”

“WHAT!” Rishabh exclaimed. “No.” He said.

“Why?”

“Because I’m saying so. We had decided that 45 minutes tops. I have other work also.” He said making excuses.

“Oh, you can leave immediately. Sorry, I think main akele manage kar hi lunga.” Anurag said acting chilled out and casual. He would really prefer if Rishabh left.

“Main tere liye aaya aur ate hi ab mujhe bhaga raha hai, sahi hai. Kabhi help nahi karunga teri.” Rishabh said sternly.

“Oh God. Stop being so dramatic. Since when are you like this.”

“Since this became about Prerna.” He blurted without a second thought. He couldn’t let her go. He couldn’t let Anurag get to know her like he did. Even the thought repelled him.

“What do you mean? Do you know her?” Anurag asked confused.

“Haan—I mean nahi. I mean-just—she isn’t good for you. She is a psycho!” he said.

“Oh!” Prerna said, interrupting before Anurag could ask more questions. “So mere baare mein decision aaplog ne le liya hai.” She said looking into Rishabh’s eyes. “Then I think I should leave.” She said, “Wese bhi tum jese logo se mujhe koi rishta nahi rakhna.”

She turned around to leave with her eyes brimming with tears. Rishabh held her wrist. Anurag got up confused. She looked back at Rishabh with fury in her eyes.

“Mr. Rishabh Bajaj, mera haath chodiye.” She said jerking her hand back. He let go. “I am sorry,” Rishabh said immediately looking down. This was becoming so difficult.

“Sorry? How many times will you apologise?” She scolded him. She then looked at Anurag, “ I thought you were a decent guy. If you were also involved in all this tab I have nothing to say.”

Anurag was completely off. He couldn’t keep up with what was happening. “Nahi, esa nahi hai.” He said.

“Dekho,” Prerna said, not letting him finish. “It’s okay. I am not interested in anything that is even remotely related to this man.” She said looking at Rishabh. She walked out.

Rishabh could not tolerate her saying such things and marched behind her without looking at poor Anurag who was still lost.

“Prerna Ruko!” Rishabh said catching her on her way to her car. “Meri baat suno.” He said holding her wrist and pulled her towards him. She tried to free herself but he wouldn’t let go.

“Mujhe nahi pata tha that Anurag jis ladki ko dekhne aa raha hai woh tum ho warna—“Warna kya?” She cut his sentence. “Usko pehle hi keh dete ki na aaye mujhse milne? Ki I’m a psycho?” She did not want to hear anything. It had taken her very long to suppress her emotions and now they were erupting in her heart. His touch was doing its work.

“Haan! Main usse aane nahi deta.” He finished. “Koi aur tumhare paas aaye.. main nahi dekh sakta!” He admitted. Prerna was thrown off by what she just heard. She looked into Rishabh’s sincere eyes. Why?Kyun abhi bhi farak padta hai?

“Prerna I—I want to—I need to tell you so much,” Rishabh said. He wasn’t being able to find the right words. “I know you’re angry with me. I know I’ve hurt you enough. I know I said I wouldn’t disturb you again. I know you don’t want to even look at me.. But I miss you.” This is all he could say. Use your super skills psycho. Just look into my eyes. Understand me. I miss you. I am empty without you. Please forgive me.

Prerna looked into his eyes trying to figure out if he meant what he was saying. Her heart wanted to believe him but her brain wasn’t convinced. “I don’t care! Why is it so difficult for you to just leave me alone? Peeche hi padh gaye ho.” She said rudely. She wasn’t liking the fact that even now when he was close her heart beat quickened. He let go of her. She looked at him one last time with tears in her eyes. He stood there silently looking away.

Prerna turned away without another word. She walked to her car. Tears streaming down her eyes. Why are you back? Why can’t you let me live in peace? I didn’t want to see you. I don’t want to feel so helpless. Prerna sat in her car and took deep breaths. She would never forgive him. I wish I never went to that wedding. I wish I never took that upgrade to business class. Nothing comes for free in this world.

*Flashback*

Prerna and Rishabh found each other again at the wedding. They ended up staying in rooms next to each other because of checking in around the same time. Prerna was glad that atleast she could talk to Rishabh since she didn’t know anyone other than the bride and Rishabh wasn’t really interested in socialising either so they ended up talking a lot. After getting the basics of what they did, where they were from, out of the way it was during the Sangeet when Rishabh saw her leaving the hall that he walked up to her.

“Leaving already?” He asked. Prerna smiled looking at him.

“Haan, bohot boring hai.”

“Shaadi’s interesting hoti bhi nahi hai.” Rishabh agreed rolling his eyes.

“I didn’t mean that! Shaadi is a very intimate event. Par somewhere this notion is lost nowadays. People call crowds and it ends up becoming so impersonal and honestly a drag.” She said.

Rishabh was interested to know more about what she thought. “So you are saying that she shouldn’t have called us?”

Prerna smirked. “No, that’s not what I meant. This sangeet should have been just their families and friends dancing to express their love for them and wishing them luck. But inside there are professional dancers and singers. Not intimate. Not personal. So boring.” She explained.

“So you would rather see a fat aunty dancing on stage rather than a talented dancer?” Rishabh laughed. He obviously did not agree.

“Yes, I would.” Prerna said seriously. “Because the fat aunty would be dancing for the bride & groom and that would mean something to them. It would show her love.”

Rishabh smiled. Okay, she does have very strong opinions. And interesting ones too.

“Have you eaten dinner?” He asked.

Prerna nodded.

“So how about we go for a walk?” He asked. Prerna was hesitant. She didn’t know what to say. But she didn’t mind so she agreed. They walked to the beach and looked at the moon against the shore.

“Isn’t this so perfect?” She asked. Rishabh looked around. “What is?”

Prerna couldn’t believe that he didn’t see it. “This. The moon, the water, the reflection of the moon on the water. The waves, the breeze.” She said shutting her eyes.

That’s when Rishabh saw something beautiful. The moonlight made her face light up. Her jewellery was shining in the light and her smile had so much peace in it that Rishabh could feel it too. He looked at her intently. Suddenly he could feel the breeze too and see how perfect it all was.

Prerna looked at him expecting some witty comeback but she caught him looking at her. She wondered what he was thinking. He didn’t look away when she caught his eye. He still looked with intention. Does he really think I’m beautiful? She asked herself. “You’re right! It is perfect.” Rishabh said. Prerna was slightly taken aback when he didn’t disagree with her. It had become their thing. He had to disagree with whatever she said.

“Really?” She asked. That’s when Rishabh looked away realising he had said something he couldn’t explain.

“I mean, it’s better than what is going on inside.” He grinned.

Prerna smiled too. “So can I ask you something?” she said looking at him.

Rishabh looked back at her, “Are you going to psycho-analyse me?”

“Are you scared if I will?”

“I am not scared of anything.” He said putting his hands in his pocket. Ready for her question.

“Good, so I won’t psycho-analyse you. I just wanted to ask why are you always so engrossed in your work?”

“What sort of a question is that?”

“Just answer it.” She said, trying to understand this man standing in front of her.

“Because… I want to be successful?” Rishabh said.

“Everyone wants to be. But they don’t work all day.”

“I don’t work all day!” Rishabh retorted.

“In the last 24 hours whenever I’ve seen you you’ve been on your phone.” She said calmly.

“I am not on my phone now..” Rishabh pointed out, unknowingly trying to prove her wrong.

“That’s why I asked you. Do you always work because you’re lonely without it?” She said without realising that this might pinch.

And it had. Rishabh became stone. No one had ever said this to him. I am lonely? NO. I like being alone. I am happy by myself. He knew he was lying to himself. He had no response to that.

“If you don’t work you feel empty. You don’t have anything else to do. And that’s why when you’re here with me. It’s been 20 minutes and you haven’t felt the need to check your phone. If you had then it wouldn’t be loneliness then it would be addiction. But it’s not. It’s emptiness.” Prerna smiled. She had so accurately diagnosed him. She felt a sense of achievement.

Rishabh had heard enough. “Shut up!” He said clenching his jaws. “You are a horrible psychologist. I am not lonely.” He said coldly. Prerna bit her lip. Shit I said it too bluntly. I said too much. I am so insensitive.

“I am so—“Save it!” Rishabh said. “I don’t need an apology. I don’t need any more crap from you. It’s late, goodnight.” He said walking off. How dare she? She doesn’t even know me. Rishabh Bajaj is not lonely. He is just very good at his work. He is a great businessman and so he is involved in his work.

Prerna hid her face in her hands. You’re so stupid. Why did you have to say so much. Ofcourse he would feel bad. It’s probably his deepest insecurity and you just blurted it out like that. Fool! Such a fool.
