Bharat Director didn't think Katrina could play full on Desi role

Bharat: Salman Khan says Ali Abbas Zafar felt that Katrina Kaif could not pull off a 'Hindustani' role. During a group interview interaction, Salman Khan got candid about how Bharat director Ali Abbas Zafar felt that Katrina Kaif would not be able to pull off a 'Hindustani' role. The actor went to defend his good friend by bringing up her movies like Rajneeti (2010) and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009).

Salman Khan has taken over Eid yet again as his highly awaited drama, Bharat, is nearing its release week. A lot of talks has surrounded the casting of the female lead of Bharat. Initially, we were going to see the reunion of Salman and Priyanka Chopra on-screen. However, owing to her wedding with Nick Jonas, the actress opted out of the project. Ultimately, it was Katrina Kaif who came to save the day and was chosen as the female lead opposite Salman in Bharat.

However, in a recent group interview interaction, according to Indian Express, Salman revealed that he always wanted Katrina in Bharat. "Priyanka was very keen on doing this film. We thought it was Katrina. But Katrina had just done Tiger Zinda Hai with me. Ali thought that ‘woh Hindustani role hai.’ (It's a Hindustani role) So, I said, ‘Kamaal hai yaar! Tumhari dost hai, itna kaam kiya hai. (Wow! She is your friend and she has done so much work) You don’t have confidence that she will be able to pull off a Hindustani role,'" Salman shared.

Khan further defended his co-star and good friend by talking about her 16-year career which has seen Katrina in movies like Rajneeti (2010) and Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani (2009. Salman questioned. "Have you forgotten that? Just because she has done movies like Bang Bang doesn’t mean she won’t be able to play an Indian role."
