With 'Luka Chuppi' Kriti Sanon emerges as one of the most bankable stars in younger generation

Kriti Sanon

A few weeks ago, when Karan Johar asked Kriti Sanon on his chat show, whether she is ambitious or not, the leggy lass replied in the affirmative. "I'm very ambitious and I think Bareilly Ki Barfi, (2017) changed things for me... But there's so much more that I want to do... she had said. Well, going by the amazing response her latest movie, Luka Chuppiand her performance in it has garnered, it seems like Kriti's dreams are right on track. What's more, she's got a number of films in her kitty that are bound to make her fans look forward to them whether it's Ashutosh Gowariker's period drama Panipat or exploring her comic side in films such as Housefull 4 and Arjun Patiala.

Making her debut in 2014 opposite Tiger Shroff in Heropanti, the Delhi girl, who once harboured engineering dreams, has only gone from strength to strength, purely on the basis of her acting abilities. Of course, it does help that the outsider is extremely easy on the eyes, with a million-dollar smile and legs that seem to go on for miles.

While she was a part of Dilwale (2015), which is counted among the highest-grossing films of all times, it was her role in Bareilly that made everyone sit up and take notice of the actress, who held her own despite the presence of two other powerhouse performers Rajkummar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana. And now, she has managed to do that again with Luka Chuppi. As a small-town girl with progressive thinking, Kriti shoulders equal responsibility in this fun caper. Director Laxman Utekar, who admits that he can't see anyone else in the role of Rashmi anymore, is all praises for the actress. "Rashmi is innocent, hyper and also has a childlike excitement. To blend all that in a character is difficult, but Kriti pulled it off. She has great clarity about her part. We didn't shoot the film in a linear manner, but she had understood her role so well that I myself can't make out what was shot first, he states.

Whether as Bareilly's Bitti or Luka Chuppi's Rashmi, it's her natural charm and ability to connect with viewers that has got her a big thumbs up from cinegoers and critics alike. While one of the reviews for the latter termed her the surprise package' of the movie, trade analyst Komal Nahta noted that she has an endearing style which enables her to connect well with the viewers'. With such positive and encouraging words coming in from all quarters, looks like this lovely lass is a contender for a long innings ahead in Bollywood.

She has done so well considering she just debuted in 2014. As compared to her contemporaries, she's really gained a lot careerwise in a shorter span of time and with lesser number of movies. Also, being an outsider, managing to do so well, that's commendable. Happy for her.

Kriti was criticised for doing less films since her debut but im glad she waited for content driven films like Bareilly, Luka Chuppi and Arjun Patiala. She's got a mixed bag if she's doing a Panipat she's also got a Housefull to balance it out. Glad she didn't fade into oblivion after Dilwale where the role was non existent. She's really come into her own. 👏

Yes her choice of movies is good. Plus her personality, the way she gave an honest opinion about nepotism, that is really admirable. I'm glad someone who is so upright is also getting success in the industry.

Kriti Sanon is happy with the success of her latest "Luka Chuppi" and the actor says good reception of a film reflects the artiste and audience are thinking along the same lines.

The actor with co-star Kartik Aaryan starred in the rom-com as a couple who get into a live-in relationship to try out their compatibility before tying the knot.

"I'm thrilled. There's also a lot of gratitude. There is a lot of hard work that goes into it. Saying yes to the film was a very instinctive decision as I loved the script. It's nice to know that your thinking matches with the audience somewhere," Kriti told PTI in an interview.

After "Bareilly Ki Barfi", Kriti again stepped into the shoes of a character from a small town with "Luka Chuppi" but the actor does not believe churning stories from the Hindi heartland is becoming a template.

"Every small town differs. Even in UP, things are different every 10km. The flavour, people are different. Also in one particular town, there are very different kinds of people and it depends on their environment, education, etc.

The actor said the two characters of Bitti and Rashmi are very different from each other.

"Bitti grew up in a cocooned environment in Bareilly. She was strong but her aspirations in terms of her career were a bit off. Even if she wanted to get married, it was about someone accepting her the way she is. She didn't really want to fall in love. "On the other hand, Rashmi was a tricky combination of a modern girl and a small town girl. She was somewhere in the higher class of a small town and was educated in Delhi. So her thought process was quite evolved."

Kriti agrees the role of a working woman has started to get screen space.

"It has become a lot more common among us as the women are working and want to work. They want to see the women who are working on screen too. So, I think it always flows from the audience.

"When you watch these characters, you feel inspired. You want to see stronger characters now. I think now when we write characters we have to make it relatable to the audience," she said.

Kriti has three more films up for release this year- "Arjun Patiala", "Housefull 4" and Ashutosh Gowariker's "Panipat".

Kriti, who plays a crime journalist in "Arjun Patiala", said her character in the upcoming film is a lot more serious about her profession than Rashmi of "Luka Chuppi".

"That character is way more ambitious. It will have the flavour of north India."

She revealed "Houseful 4" has an "angle of reincarnation", where she will play two characters.

The actor, who is currently filming on her first period drama "Panipat", said she is thoroughly enjoying working in the film.

"As a Punjabi woman from Delhi, playing a Maharashtrian in itself is a huge change. The character also belongs to a different era and I'm playing a person who was alive at some point of time. Ashu sir is amazing with the magic that he creates on the set," she said.
