My Review on Gully Boy ..

Loved The Movie ..Got to b one of the best movie of the year and now my equal Favourite along with Uri this year ⭐️ ..Ranveer and Alia both r hands down getting all best actor and actress nominations for sure and even the movie deserve multiple nominations and awards as well ..Whether its the ensemble supporting cast of talented actors or the screenplay , camera , dialogues , music everything is simply flawless 👏..Rarely a movie comes where every frame has perfection written all over it ..Gully Boy is one such movie ..I dint hv any problem with the length of the movie either because not a single scene bored me ..There was so much happening in the movie all the time as the movie not just focussed on Murad's (Ranveer's) journey but the subplots like Saifeena's(Alia's) issues with her family in terms of her career or Murad-Saifeena's love life problems or Murad's problem with his dad or his equation with his car thief friend Moen and also how he balances out between his new found friends MC Sher(Sidharth) ,Sky(Kalki) and his old childhood buddies like Moen ,Saifeena and other guy ..So many subplots were beautifully woven and connected with the main plot that the length of the movie never really bothered as I was equally interested in every single character and their journey .. If it was just about Rap I might hv got bored but that was not the case and thats where film shined for me .. I always love movies where I can get to watch a brilliant ensemble cast along with the main leads .. Subplots r always important to make a good movie and thats where Gully boy scores as a complete movie .. Honestly I m not a fan of Rap and I had my reservations while going for the movie but woww It left me speechless in the end thanks to a beautiful narrative which not just tells the story of Murad but also the story of Saifeena , MC Sher , Moen and many such character .. For once I even wanted to know about Murad's Dadi and whether he comes to meet her in the end or not , such was the impact of every single character in the movie .. Hats off to the casting director and Zoya the director for writing such a engaging movie and making the perfect casting 👏

Apart from the Rap aspect in the movie which was brilliantly shown , movie is also about different relations & layered characters..

Its a movie about beautiful depiction of friendship betw MC Sher & Murad or Murad & that car thief friend Moen who in pre climax himself goto jail but makes sure Murad is not trapped in it bec like he told Murad that he is made fr something else & when he requests Murad to take care of his slum kids & feed them daily ,it brings tears to every eyes ,beautiful moment..movie dont just show child labour & lectures on it but it actually shows the root cause of child labour as here this car thief friend Moen make the kids work only to feed those same kids ..Its easy to lecture on stop child labour but i m glad this movie highlights whats the root cause behind it ..Also unlike other friendship movies we dont see the cliched jealousy angle here when MC Sher is rejected in final audition round but Murad gets selected ,instead we see Sher cheering & rooting fr his Gully buddy ,no OTT jealousy drama for once 👍🏼..

Its also a movie about a beautiful yet realistic love story of Murad & Saifeena where fr once we hv a kick ass girl who just dont shed tears after learning that her lover might hv cheated on her but instead goes & breaks head of that other girl with a glass bottle 😆..Their love story is quite inspiring actually & every girlfriend boyfriend during their courtship period will relate to it ,there was love , passion, possessiveness, guilt , insecurity & maturity ,In short the whole journey of these two characters makes u feel fr both in the end..In fact we cannot even question that how easily Saifeena can forgive and forget Murad's cheating because theres a scene where Saifeena jokingly asks him what if I go and do the same with another guy to which Murad smiles and tells her do whatever u feel like , I will still be yours and after this both patch up ..So again we can see Murad was not the typical MCP guy and he was equally guilty about the cheating though he dint really cheat but its more of Sky(Kalki's character) throwing herself on him as it was pure physical attraction from her side...Zoya as director actually dared to show female desires and passion beautifully in the movie through both Saifeena & Sky's character without really going the typical feminism way .,.What I mean is Zoya showed very simple things that every regular college going Muslim girl will identify with like putting lipstick hiding from her parents or initiating a liplock with her boyfriend or just making sure her hair looks good when Murad that night was coming to meet her for their patch up..We might ask whats so big in all these things but for Muslim Girls these r really big things and the way their subtle desires or passion was shown , I simply loved it ..When she breaksdown and tells her parents that yes I hide things from u guys because I m not allowed to even put lipstick or go watch a cinema in a hall like my other friends do , allow me a normal life and I wont hide anything , u feel for her ..Without really lecturing on the religious restrictions , a lot actually was conveyed through her character .. And I feel this is one reason why her character was shown over possessive and a bit insecure when it comes to her relation with Murad ..Murad too used to understand her fears and thats why he still loved her despite her temper issues because in his own family he has seen what his father did with his mother ..so he understood Saifeena's insecurities here and thats why I loved his guilt trip after that night with Sky ..Though Saifeena was more vocal about her love for Murad while he was the silent one in the relation but we can see that Saifeena was actually his strength and whenever he got something big like his 1st song recording or his first opportunity to do a music album with MC Sher , he always run upto Saifeena to give her the good news .. Saifeena was dominating in the relation but Murad never felt suffocated ,he instead enjoyed her domination because she used to fill that void in his life in terms of love , care and possessiveness that he never got from his family .. I always felt he wanted a assurance from his loved one about whether he is choosing the right path and he always got that assurance from Saifeena .. in short Saifeena used to complete Murad .. She was that ray of sunshine in his life and he even confessed that to Sky(Kalki) later post his break up with Saifeena when Sky thought mayb she has a chance but Murad stepped back saying if Saifeena is not in my life then I m broken .. that confession was heartbreaking..Overall Murad-Siafeena love story was beautifully penned down with its share of ups and downs and u feel for both characters .. Even their break-up phone scene makes u laugh and cry at the same time , it looked so natural and real ..

Its also a movie about love & hate relation betw father-son who never shared a good bond after his dad brought 2nd wife but still our heart melts in that pre-climax father-son scene when 1st time his father emotionally breaksdown in front of his son with the fear of his shaky future till he assures his dad that he knows what he is doing..Even though Murad and his mom moved out of the house , his father still cared for Murad and we can see that in the pre climax scene when first time he showed some genuine affection for his son ...No character in the movie is good or bad ..All had grey shades & very relatable ..Just when u thought his father is heartless , he surprises us in this pre-climax father-son scene and u cant help but wish the family comes together and his father accepts his son's dreams when Murad starts explaining him about Rapping earns him the respect which no other profession did ..

One aspect which stands out in the movie is not once writer tried to create sympathy for the poor but instead we see how cooly Kalki's character Sky who comes from rich elite club mingles with Murad & Sher & makes that album ..In fact Murad steps back after realising she mayb falling for him considering he comes from a poor background & not worthy of her though both connected on music. .I wonder if her character dint come from rich background whom would Murad choose then -Saifeena or Kalki's character ,though I feel eventually he realises Saifeena is her true soulmate because she completes and understands him in many ways but its an interesting triangle open to interpretations considering Murad & Sky connected through music..So for me even Sky's character was equally interesting in the movie but I m glad they dint mk it a typical triangle and kept it real ..

Best moment in the movie got to b the Car scene when the rich girl is in tears while Murad helplessly drives the car without asking her anything bec he realises as driver he dont hv the right to question his owner though the human inside wanted to console her ,after that he takes the inspiration from this moment and records his first rap Doori ; Here the picturisation of Doori song indicating the class divide was brilliant with those haunting eyes of Murad looking at camera ,there r no lectures given on it but just silence between the driver & his owner who is in tears sitting in the backseat says it all ..Wonderfull Direction & writing here ..Also Ranveer here was marvellous with his silent act ..He has those god gifted intense brooding eyes and he uses it brilliantly to his advantage in such scenes where there r no dialogues ..

Climax makes u feel like grooving on Apna time ayega..it was so powerpacked yet was kept short & crisp & end leaves u speechless as u might look left & right around u in theatre to chk if people r getting up or not and say errm thats it ? 😆 The impact of the end is such that entire theatre was sitting even when end credits were rolling bec that end credit tells a story of its own which is beautiful ..Many loose ends r connected in the end credits thus leaving little room for u to complain or question 😆..I loved the end credits here ..Unlike other movies it dont break into some rap song but instead lot of memorable moments r shown which makes u feel overwhelmed even when u r getting up from your seats like Murad visiting his slum where he used to stay and seeing the amount of respect and love in every eyes , he finally feels a sense of achievement followed by his promise to his thief friend Moeen about feeding his slum kids .. Every end is tied beautifully and not forgotten ..

This got to b career best performance of Ranveer Hands down ..He underplayed Murad the driver,Murad the employee ,Murad the student,Murad the innocent bhola bhala fanboy of rap but when as a rapper he undergoes the change ,its terrific. .Bringing so many dimensions to one character was not easy at all especially when u r required to underplay your every emotion as a driver but in split sec transform into a rapper as soon as u go inside the car and start perceiving your passion ..the transformation was phenomenal and consistent throughout in terms of body language and voice modulation..Also unlike his last 2 movies , he dont get any heroic entry either ,infact u dont even notice when he enters & so shining in such role is praiseworthy 👏. .Alia as Saifeena is a revelation man ,she brings so much energy & owns the scene whenever she is present ..People might make fun of her bec of nepotism etc etc but man she is brilliant performer & her character was such a fiesty progressive one that u cant help but root and cheer for her ..Yeah she mayb lucky to get such a performance oriented role even in a male dominated movie but to make use of that luck and shine in it needs talent and calibre which Alia has 👏. ..I liked how both Murad and Saifeena r shown giving equal imp to education & completing graduation ..perfect msg there to cherish your dreams but not at the cost of your education👍🏼 ..

Sidharth as MC Sher is brilliant & will sweep all debut awards this year if its his debut movie which I m not sure but he simply oozes confidence as Rapper and I loved the way he motivates Murad and makes him get the perfect rhythm for his poems without putting him down or lecturing him or showing his seniority etc ..Such a well written character ..I wanted to see more of his family though because I felt he got equally interesting family but mayb the movie would hv become too long then , so its fine .

Murad's dad Vijay Raaz & mom whose name I dunno both were fab ..His mom was brilliant in portraying the emotions and rage of a wife who was stripped off her rights as it was overnight given to another woman who mayb of his daughter's age ..There was a scene where the second wife of his dad secretly wispers to Murad that she liked his rap after his dad blasted him for wasting time in all this and we all thought now his mother will come and console an emotional Murad but instead she comes and wispers to him "What did that 2nd wife tell u" 😆 ..That jealousy and the fear of my sautan might even snatch away my son from me by supporting his music just how she snatched my husband was brilliantly portrayed by this actress who plays Murad's mother 👏..This is what I liked in the movie , every scene was so realistic and no unwanted melodrama because we too often do this after some relative wispers in our ears , we go and ask the person "kya boli woh" , Murad's mom did the same 😆; His father was complete a**hole to Murad and his mom but in the end his breakdown scene in front of his son makes u feel he loves his other family too .. Vijay Raaz was brilliant in capturing both the good and bad side of his character 👏

His car thief friend Moeen(dunno the actor's name) was brilliant as well ..Again throughout the movie u feel like cursing the guy for doing bad stuffs or making the kids do bad work but that jail scene between him and Murad makes u completely change your view about him and u end up feeling for him ..This is the beauty of the movie ..every character is layered and flawed yet u feel for them .

Saifeena's mom and dad were good as well and it was real fun to watch their family interactions .. Every family can relate to Saifeena's family where the daughter is apple pie of her father's eyes whose advantage every daughter takes a bit but mom is extra strict and balances the equation perfectly ..

Its a Fab ensemble cast & all had their own importance in movie ..Spl mention to brilliant dialogues which makes the movie so much relatable , raw and real ..Direction & Writing r the real heroes of the movie along with music ⭐️ ..Theres a slow number picturised at night on kalki and ranveer's characters which is not rap ,wonder why its never showed on tv . its my fav song from the movie apart from Apna time ayega and Doori ..Overall a Flawless movie & Highly recommended to all ...5/5 from me ...Nothing really bothered me in the movie .. Even the length was absolutely fine for me ..

Thank you for the detailed review! I was going to try to quote and bold the parts of your review I wanted to respond to, but I agree with so many of your points, I thought the entire post would be bolded!

So, first, I also loved that MC Sher did not react with jealousy, but with pride, when Murad moved on, and Murad seemed to have the same reaction when he thought that Sher had moved on. It was like they both felt like if one of them won, they both won. Which is probably true.

Moeen was such an interesting character. When he told Murad that he at least fed the kids and kept them off of the streets, it made me stop and think. Not that what he was doing was right, but in his world of all "wrongs," that was probably one of the least "wrong" actions to take with these kids, especially given Moeen's resources and the kids' circumstances.

When Murad cheated, I admit i was disappointed and was like, "OH NOOO!!!:(" But I think I understand how it happened. Sky represented a type of woman (rich, empowered, independent) that he probably believed was out of his reach. I think he was in a headspace of "Wow...I can't believe this is happening!" And I don't need to elaborate on what else he was probably feeling in that moment!😆 He immediately regretted it and couldn't even bring himself to talk to Saifeena, which is what immediately tipped her off. 😆 I hope so much that Ranveer and Alia get paired again in a film! I absolutely adored their onscreen chemistry. It was so natural and real!

Both Saifeena and Murad's families had so much depth. Even his brother, who didn't utter a single word in the film, let his emotions show through his eyes. He seemed very much like Murad, quiet and watchful, but everything in the house obviously affected him deeply.

Zoya could have made five films from this one. There is so much to say that I could talk about all of the nuances and feelings I still have about this story for weeks. So I think I need to stop typing. 😊

Difference= 19.5-8.5 = 11 cr
19.5/11x100= 56%

Yes you are right. If we go by avg collections(16cr) still drop by 45%.
If we take least of 4 in last 4 days which is 12.75 crthen the drop from 12.75 to 8.5 is around 35%

Gully boy is a celebration of breaking free and refusing to conform.
i loved how Murad's ambition was not to fight his poverty, or his home conditions, or to earn money because he had to take his mother to a seperate place.

Murad's ambition was to follow rap because he LOVED it.

Thats where Zoya hit it out of the park. She didnt make Murad a slum boy who earned a fortune, she made murad one of everyone, anyone who deamt to be something more than his destiny offered him.

Murad's flawless rendition of rap seeing the foreigner's T shirt, his eyes made him one of all of us .. the fan boy .. His eyes on seeing MC Sher doing thta flawless rap were a gorgeous emotion. Like he couldn't believe he could look upto someone in front of him.

Safeena was a firecracker, i was afraid i wpuldnt see much of Alia but everything she gave to the script it irreplaceable. her fights, her passion, her desire .. eveyrthing hit c hord. The scene in the train where she gifts him her IPAD and he says he cannot gift her anything and she says, "tu mujhe jaisi hn waisa rehna deta hai .." .. That scene touched my heart so so deeply. How important was tha for her.

The supporting cast was great, the fight of Murad's parents where his mother shouts, "tu ne seekha aj tak kaise chuuna hai mujhe? lekin main tu kisi doosre ko le k nahi ayi" .

Isnt this the plight of every woman, a man's sexual disastisfaction is valid but a womans' isnt even considered?

The movie had just too many gorgeous layers.
