Kerala flood toll touches 79, rains continue

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 16 (IANS) With rains still pouring down heavily leading to flooding across Kerala, 12 fresh deaths were reported on Thursday, taking the toll to 79, since August 8. More rains were forecast till Saturday.

Entire Kerala has been on a red alert since Wednesday evening. A total of 28 deaths were reported on the day.

Pathanamthitta district in central Kerala has been the worst affected in the last 24 hours as thousands of people -- students among others were trapped in their homes in Ranni, Aranmula and Kozhencherry.

Various media Whats App groups, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's have been flooded with SOS messages from Pathanamthitta crying for help.

Fishing boats from Kollam reached the flooded areas as the rescue operation with the aid of defence personnel continued.

Traffic on the national highway between Ernakulam and Thrissur has been regulated since.

Train operations between Ernakulam and Angamaly have also been stopped and at Thiruvananthapuram railway station tickets are not being issued.

All educational institutions were closed on Thursday. Situation in the capital district on Thursday improved as there were less rains. Water logging in low lying areas also receded.

The deaths on Thursday were reported from Malappuram, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Thrissur.

Parts of Ernakulam and Thrissur have been facing tough times with the dam waters from Idukki districts reaching Periyar, and its tributaries late on Wednesday.

In a first, the sluices of 33 dams across Kerala were opened on Tuesday, following incessant rains since late that day as the Met forecast more till Saturday.

The famed tourist destination in Munnar though continued to be in a bad shape, an official said.

The Sabarimala temple continued to be cut off by the river Pamba in spate.

The hilly district of Wayanad connected from Kannur and Kozhikode through a hill highway was badly hit with the overflowing Banasura Sagar dam waters creating havoc. Several landslides were reported in the area.

In Wayanad alone, more than 20,000 people have been put up in relief camps, authorities said.

The Cochin International airport was closed on Wednesday till Saturday as the Periyar river waters entered the operational area.

The airport authorities are worried about the flooding of the Rs 60-crore solar power plant -- one of the biggest in an airport spread over 45 acres. They fear about its working again.

The defence forces and disaster response teams have been putting up makeshift bridges and clearing roads in the affected areas in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Idukki and Kannur districts.

The heaviest rains and floods since 1924 have caused massive destruction, leaving more than 75,000 people in relief camps and damage to crops and properties that the state estimated to be over Rs 8,000 crore.

Nearly 100 people have lost their lives since August 8 as Kerala reels under one of the worst floods in its history. On Thursday, torrential rain and floods claimed 30 lives, swamping homes, destroying roads, and disrupting air and rail traffic in many places, officials said. Overall, 97 people have died in rain-related incidents since the second spell of monsoon fury got unleashed on August 8.

Battling inclement weather conditions, the Indian navy began airlifting marooned people in Trichur, Aluva and Muvattupuzha. Dramatic videos showed people stranded atop flooded homes and hills being winched up by Navy choppers.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called Prime Minister Narendra Modi again, seeking more aid considering the situation. He also sought additional Army personnel and helicopters. For the first time in history, the state has opened 35 of its 39 dams. Meanwhile, operations at the Cochin International Airport have been suspended till August 26 due to flooding in and around the airport. A red alert has been issued in all the 14 districts of the state.

A step-by-step guide on how you can donate to the CM's relief fund

Train services have been disrupted and road transport services are in disarray with stretches of roads coming under water. With Kerala grappling with unprecedented flood situation, the Education Department has rescheduled Onam vacation for schools in the state. The holiday will be from 17 August to 29th August. Rise in flood waters in Periyar River due to the rains and opening of all shutters of all major dams including Mullaperiyar, Cheruthoni, part of Idukki reservoir, and Idamalayar, have severely affected lives of people in downstream areas

Thank you mods
Dear friends,

As you already know Kerala is witnessing its worst flood crisis in a century. Till now more than 300 people lost life, 3.15 lakh people are in rescue camps, more than 15 lakh people are in unofficial camps and thousands are yet to be rescued.
We need help and prayers from all of you. People who are not in kerala can also help us as follows :

1. You can donate to Chief ministers disaster relief fund online. Amount is not a matter. If you can donate 100 rupees or 50 rupees atleast kindly do it. Every single rupee matters.

2. You can send cloths, sanitary napkins, basic items like toothpaste, soap, brushes, foods, blankets etc to rescue camps online through amazon. Select "kerala needs your help" in amazon app/site and u can send items to NGOs listed. (NGO goonj is actively participating in helping the people in relief camps.they hav joined with star network too. So it surely helps)

3. Just like amazon, flipkart too have link to donate. They joined with goonj. Click "lets support gods own country" it will take to goonj website and u can donate there.

4. You can also donate money through paytm. They hav given option to donate for flood relief.

Ps: There are volunteer groups collecting funds and items.kindly verify the authenticity of the group If you are donating to them. Where as cheif minister disaster relief fund is 100% safe and accounted.
