What's with Veere Di Wedding's IMDB rating?

Why is the IMDB rating of Veere Di Wedding so low? It's just 2.8, even lower than Grand Masti and Great Grand Masti.

Is the movie that bad, or the chauvinist pigs and conservatives are deliberately down voting it?

IMDB ratings used to be a good indicator of how a movie is perceived by general audience but now even that is useless because of rampant internet trolls. I am not talking about those who post bad reviews for films of stars they don't like but when a group strategically try to pull down a movie. It happened with Gunday. And now VDW.

No way is it a 2.8/3 star movie. It should atleast be a 5/6.

There are groups of men online who downvote female-centric movies.

Ocean's 8 escaped their wrath because unlike Star Wars and Ghostbusters the Oceans series never catered to nerdy fanboys. It had a more universal fanbase open to capers of any kind.

The backlash to Veere Di Wedding is very similar to what many men said when Sex and the City came out. Fortunately for Sarah Jessica Parker and Co, IMDB was not a big deal then. But on the early message boards, Kim Catrall and Cynthia Nixon were very horrendously trolled. It is mind blowing for Indian men to have women be so frank about sex and relationships and not have men be centerstage in their life. Let's not forget that a lot of Indian men are in IT - and hang out with the same fanboys who troll other films.

I've never found IMDB reliable for Bollywood movies and in most cases, for movies outside USA/Hollywood. They're not a good barometer for European, American Indie, Asian, or South American films.

That said, these Bolly-centric trolls really love downvoting/upvoting movies they dislike/like. I'd never judge a Bollywood movie based on IMDB only. It's simply not for Bollywood - and the trolls ensure that the rating is nothing but vitriolic ejaculation by a certain set of fans/trolls.

We should set out own version of IMDB - like China with Douban - and regulate it so that only authentic votes and reviews are factored in.

For any review site, I do not trust the aggregate reviews.

I actually read reviews of people who loved or hated it. I dismiss the one word or one sentence reviews. I also dismiss the ones that are blatantly sexist, homophobic or that comment on their personal like/dislike of a celebrity rather than the content.

Finally, from the people who gave substantial unbiased reviews, I think of what people liked or disliked. I may also look into how they rated other movies. If their tastes seem to align with mine then I trust the review. There are always those superhit films which everyone loved that I hated - like Matrix and Dil To Pagal Hain. Then there are panned movies that I actually enjoyed like Aisha or Jagga Jasoos.

It seems like a lot of work, but it's actually quick and easy perusing the net. Of course, I will see a lot of movies just for the hype or because it is streaming. But every now and then I look at reviews for films I am unsure of vesting time in.
