I have read a lot about Mani Ratnam's trilogy based on political terrorism. The movies include Roja, Bombay and Dil Se.
I had not seen Bombay and Roja yet I had seen Dil Se, i am aware of the adulation for the movie has got both for its music and its idea despite it was a FLOP at the box office and it was made in hindi originally. Trust me I liked the film, and I never found in mind-boggling. There was many twists that got me off-guard.
It's recently I have just got to watch both Roja and Bombay. These were both Tamil/Telugu versions that were later dubbed in Hindi Versions. Surprisingly Both Roja and Bombay were HITS in their hindi version as well in their original versions..and what movies are they really 👏
Roja is absolute phenomenal. It's a simple story abt a wife struggling to get her husband back from thr clutches of terrorists, and Initially she doesn't love him because he was chosen to be the suitor of her elder sister but she refused him because she loved someone else. Roja doesn't have any glossy feel but its high on drama, emotions and music. OH BOY @ AR RAHMAN is a genius its hard to believe that this was his debut. the movie touched my heart in so many ways mainly because of the fact the hindi dubbing was perfect. also there r some artists from bollywood who r speaking out n out hindi. it seems like MANI shot the film in hindi and Telugu/Tamil simultaneously.
after watching, I googled about it and the info I got was heartening. Films on terrorism mostly do well and there was so much buzz for Roja in Telugu version that the hindi version became an instant HIT the film got pan india success despite coming in 94 n the film released in Telugu in 92. the music in (hindi) surprisingly that is rich in MOSTLY melodious was a smash hit and took magnasound the top on its game. Clearly Roja deserved every success...that it got but what the hell it doesn't really get talked about Dil Se..W*F why??
second was BOMBAY, again Mani Ratnam spelled magic with this thriller drama based on mumbai riots, he woven a beautiful story between a hindi guy n muslim woman and I was totally terrified to watch the film and applaud the brilliance of Ratnam. the film like Roja again was a HIT in hindi belt for the controversy it had created and what to say about the music. Rahman was at his top of the game again. This film was also originally made in Telugu I guess...
But when I compare these films to Dil Se, Dil se pails and falls like a pack of cards. In Both Roja and Bombay Arvind Swamy did a marvellous job because he looked the character. SRK hammed in Dil se and played his obsessive part which he played in Darr and Anjaam which looks repetitiive. Even manisha koirala isn't half as Impressive as she was in Bombay. Music Wise, true Dil se's sales did wonders and did huge for Rahman, but if you look at it, the music isn't really strong because the film itself not that great, Preity Zinta's track was absurd and totally uncalled for.
but despite all this DIL se is considered a great piece and no 1 literary talks about Roja or Bombay the better films the better music. I'm from North, but I can easily that the hindi renditions of both Telugu/Tamil versions of Ratnam's films were far better than the original hindi version of Dil Se. This is an opinion though but I 'm looking forward to know from people why they think DIL SE is actually more talked about where it shouldn't be
