Sameer and his friends Pandit and Muna were celebrating the success of winning the bet. Muna carried over bottles of cold drinks in glee and was followed by Pandit who had his hands filled with plates of samosas.
---------------------------------------------------------
Finally, Naina had confessed her love for Sameer. Although the trio had not expected such an abrupt confession, they chattered and cheered without a care about the heart that Sameer had broken beyond repair. Sameer had a motorcycle accident earlier that morning on his way to school. Naina had waited the entire day for him in distress and had heard rumors about how tremendous his injuries were.
In reality, Sameer was nursing a simple abrasion on his elbow. By the time he had made it to class, students were enjoying their afternoon lunches while Naina waited outside clutching a bar of chocolate she had brought for him. WIth her tiffin box on her lap, Naina patiently sat and tried to calm her nerves. Muna and Pandit were nowhere to be seen so she wasn't even able to ask about him. She tearfully thought about how she had wronged him and never apologized. He was so good to her and had even gone as far to apologize for no mistake of his own.
When Sameer walked into the courtyard, Naina had completely lost sense of her surroundings. All she could focus on was him. In his everyday school uniform with his hair ruffling in the wind and a simple bandage wrapped around his elbow, he knocked the breath out of her lungs. She stood up as her tiffin fell and the aloo-parathas met the concrete floor. Sameer spotted her and she ran up to him in her usual child-like manner. To his surprise, she didn't stop in front of him as per usual or stumble down to her feet. Instead, Naina wrapped her arms around him and grabbed him tightly. To her, this was just another one of her dreams. For Sameer, the care-free grin slipped off of his face as he was unsure of what to make of the crying girl who was pressed against him.
"Naina...?, Sameer questioned. Naina hiccuped and she incoherently muttered to him. She slightly eased away from him and he felt a thick sort of tension cloud the air. For some reason, her tears had placed him in an uneasy mood. He suddenly became aware of everyone staring at them. The girl in front of him seemed to be unaware. "Sameer, please forgive me...I wronged you so much. You aren't a cheat...cheater but because of me you got blamed", she spluttered. Sameer was confused as the girl in front of him shook. What had brought this one? "Agar, tumhe kuch ho jata toh...mein apne pyaar ke saath itna galat kiya...Yeh janke mein toh...", Naina continued. Sameer looked at her in surprise as Muna and Pandit high-fived each other. Naina was surprised by the sudden noise and realized that everyone was staring at them. She grew nervous and her face burned with shame.
Sameer however, had not fully grasped her confession. "Tumhara pyaar?", he questioned. Naina looked at him straight into his eyes and said, "ha mera pyaar tum ho. Sameer I love you". She squeezed her hands together and realized that she was still holding the chocolate bar. Somehow despite her hugging Sameer and dropping her tiffin, the chocolate had survived. She didn't know what else to say and could no longer look at him. Sameer's friends slapped him on the back and he was pushed back into reality. Naina the behenji had finally confessed to him. She loved him and had even given him a hug. The boys who had made the bet with Sameer were only a few paces away. Somehow Sameer did not feel the glee he thought he would. This moment seemed wrong and somehow he felt wrong.
"Wow Sameer, good job man. Behenji ko tumne pataya. Shart jeet gaya. Ab tera badla poora huwa.", said one boy. The behenji in question widened her eyes in shock she dropped her chocolate bar. Sameer watched as it fell to the ground and the wrapper got covered in mud. Everyone around them began to laugh. Some girls had joined in on the laughter and they all whispered and got to know about the story of how Sameer had wagered his hair. Sameer tried to shush everyone but could not manage to end the chain of whispers. Sameer could not meet Naina's eyes but his two friends took action. Muna said, "Naina sorry yaar, Sameer ko apna baal bachana tha. Aur tumne toh bohot galat kiya hain Sameer ke saat. Hisab ab bara bar huwa (You are even now)". Pandit cleared the crowd and led Naina away in hopes that she would not get Sameer punished for his actions. Naina rushed past everyone wordlessly.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Sameer was snapped out of his trance as he recalled how Naina had taken the news of the bet. As promised, Pandit and Muna had threatened the guys who had revealed the bet. They managed to convince everyone to not allow the teachers or administration find out about it. The trio was unknown to the effects it was having on Naina who became surrounded by whispers and teasing for the past few days. They really were not out to destroy Naina's life, in their childish antics they had not realized how heavy the bet had fallen on Naina. Sameer had sought out to see Naina but she avoided him. From the outside, Sameer noticed that she had seemed to take the news very well. She continued to excel in her classes and was performing even better than before. From a distance, Sameer felt relieved that he had not affected her as much as he thought.
Naina had immersed herself into her studies to distract herself. She had called the special school once again and had thankfully been given a chance to attend. Using what little she had in savings from doing tuitions she paid the fees for the next semester. When she walked into the lunchroom everyone's voices hushed and stares came her way. Swati had been exceptionally understanding and although her crush on Sameer had not completely dissipated, she fiercely supported her friend and tried to keep the other girl's from teasing Naina. Sameer munched on a samosa and forced himself to not look at her. Naina had only revealed to Swati about her transfer and was counting down the days that she could leave this suffocating environment. Luckily for her, today was her last day. Somehow despite her best efforts, she was unable to be angry at Sameer for his horrid plan against her. She was after all his worst offender from the day he stepped into the school. Her father had slapped, ridiculed, and made Sameer's life very difficult. In a way, Muna's words about evening out her crimes against him had made sense to her. She could not quelch the hurt she felt but the anger at Sameer had subsided days ago. Her father's vile behavior towards Sameer had reminded her constantly about the secret she was hiding.
The librarian who had enjoyed torturing Sameer had another bone to pick with Sameer on this very unfortunate day. Sameer's motorbike was taking up the space of two bicycles, "this would be a good way to get Sameer's bike banned", Rakesh said to himself. When he entered the cafeteria and called out Sameer's name, everyone gasped in fear. No one wanted Sameer to be punished for what he had done with Naina. He had become a hero in the eyes of everyone who wanted Mrs. Perfect to be removed from her throne. Sameer felt relief when Rakesh mentioned his bike and tuned out his taunts. Rakesh brought back his cheating matter onto the stand as he scolded Sameer and his upbringing. While Sameer had become completely used to Rakesh, there was another soul who scorched with every word her father lashed out. "BAS PAPA...Stop!!, Naina yelled. Rakesh looked at his daughter in shock and turned red in anger. Before Rakesh could lash out on Naina in front of everyone, Rakesh was dragged off into the courtyard.
Sameer exchanged glances with Muna and Pandit and followed the father-daughter duo.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Papa ap galat hain, Sameer ne cheating nehi kiya. Arjun Bhaiya ke paas apke duplicate keys tha", Naina said as she quivered in fear. SLAP
Naina fell from the unexpected force that left her cheek stinging. From a distance, Sameer looked in disbelief and was stopped by Muna and Pandit from rushing to her aid. Naina stood up and bravely looked her father in the eyes. "Ha papa, ye saach hain., she said. Rakesh grew redder with fury and smacked her again, this time on her other cheek. This time Naina was ready for the impact and stood her ground. "Tum jalti ho Arjun se. Is liye tum yeh sab ke rai ho!", Rakesh said in disbelief.
Arjun could do no wrong in Rakesh's eyes. From where he was standing, all he saw was a girl who wanted to ruin the most successful thing in his life. He grabbed his daughter's petite shoulders roughly and threatened, "agar tum yeh baat kisi ko aur ko sunaiya, main bhool jaungi ke mere koi beti hain." Sameer angrily gripped the brick pillar that he was hiding behind. He thought to himself about how he had been ridiculed for this cheating scandal but before he could process his anger he heard Naina's shakey but sure voice. "I'll tell everyone", Naina said and received another smack almost instantly.
Sameer looked in disbelief and didn't even realize that he was physically fighting off Pandit and Muna's attempts to stop him from putting a stop to the abuse. The Rakesh sir who everyone cowered in front of, who left Pandit and Muna shivering in fear at this very moment...was unable to contain his own daughter. He could barely digest what was happening before he heard another smack, and then another, and then another. Naina kept refusing to obey Ramesh. Finally, Rakesh was flabbergasted and left his daughter with a final warning. Rakesh's hand was stinging from the force of his own slaps. Despite Naina's continued insistence, Rakesh felt he had subdued her and was still engulfed in his world that consisted of a perfect Arjun who could do no wrong.
Naina fell to the ground in exhaustion after her father left. Her cheeks were numb from the impact of his slaps. Sameer hurriedly approached her and she simply looked at him with a blank stare. When he offered his hand she got up by herself and started towards the school. She saw Muna and Pandit and simply looked at them and very clearly stated, "We aren't even yet (Hisab abbhi bi bara bar huwa nehi).
