1. The theme of the show: The story is that of an 18-year-old girl, Diya (played by Tejaswi Prakash), who gets married to a 9-year-old boy of a royal household, Ratan Singh (played by Afaan Khan). She is supposed to act as his wife and protector, hence the title. Read that again to digest what you just read.
2. Through the story we are led to believe that the 9-year-old kid develops a crush on a 18-year-old woman and not just that, he starts following her around, which is very unlikely for a kid of that age to do. Moreover, he starts clicking her photos without her knowledge. Do we want to normalize this by presenting a kid in that light?
4. Things went from bad to worse. The 'young couple' went on a honeymoon in London. There was an outcry from across the media. A petition was started by Mansi Jain on Change.org and in just a few days, over 51,000 people signing in agreement.
The petition was sent to Smriti Irani and it read as: "Pehredar Piya Ki, a 10-year-old impressionable little kid ("piya") caressing and stalking a lady who's more than double his age and filling sindoor in her maang is being telecasted at prime time 8:30pm on SONY. (Family time) It is to be devoured by the entire nation. Imagine the kind of influence it will steadily and perpetually infuse in the viewer's mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be influenced by such TV serials. Join us in signing the petition to ban this serial (sic)."
The I&B ministry escalated the matter to the BCCC (Broadcasting content complaints Council) seeking an immediate response on the plea. Official statement read as: "The I&B ministry has written to the BCCC (the self regulatory mechanism for GEC content) - to take up the matter since citizens have petitioned and there is an outcry across from media. The BCCC has to take cognizance and respond and take action- since close sources say the Govt. has sent a letter to this effect to the BCCC today for immediate and prompt action. Especially since the show has a suhaagraat sequence between a grown up woman and a small boy. The I&B ministry has specifically written to the BCCC to immediately take this up and respond on priority."
Now that the show is taken off the air it feels that order is restored. The society on the whole and parents in particular, can heave a sigh of relief. (Credits: Bushra Fatima)
