Sridevi's MOM released today to fabulous review while Raveena Tandon's Maatr got lukewarm response when it released in April

Sridevi in MOM and Raveena Tandon in Maatr

Mumbai: Sridevi's new film MOM, which hit cinemas today, and Raveena Tandon's Maatr, which released in April, have some uncanny similarities. The theme, story, setting and the treatment of both these films are very similar to each other. Since both the films come months apart from one another, it's quite possible that the idea of these films must have been pitched to both these actresses around the same time. Neither Sridevi nor Raveena are actively working in the movies anymore but this similar rape and revenge thriller story convinced them to make a comeback. Sridevi's last Hindi film was English Vinglish in 2012. The film got very positive reviews and was well received by the audiences. She was last seen in the Tamil language Puli. Raveena Tandon has stayed away from Bollywood and not taken up any significant role of late.

We give you six similarities between Sridevi's MOM and Raveena Tandon's Maatr.

1) Identical Titles: Both one-word titles mean the same thing - mother. Raveena Tandon's film has a Sanskrit title while Sridevi's has an English one.

2) Similar Characters: In Maatr, Raveena Tandon plays the mother of the young woman who is raped and in MOM, Sridevi plays the step-mother. In both the films, the rapists do drugs and are drunk, they dump the women from their car on an isolated road in the national capital. The setting, reactions of the families and the media are identical.

3) Justice Denied: In Maatr, Raveena is fighting against the system by herself and in MOM, Sridevi and her husband are trying to get justice for their daughter. The verdict doesn't go in their favour in both the films because of the lack of evidence. The rapists get away because of the legal procedure and loopholes in the system.

4) Mother Takes Charge: When all else fails and justice is denied, it's the mother (Sridevi in MOM and Raveena Tandon in Maatr) who takes charge and decides to fight it out and eventually takes the law in her hands.

5) Tracks The Rapists: In both the films it's the mother who drives around Delhi and tracks the rapists. Sridevi and Raveena's characters drive the car, park and hide behind the wheel near their homes and chase the rapists who are on bikes. In Maatr, Raveena rams her car into one of the rapist's bikes and kills him while a similar scene in MOM has a different outcome. In another scene, both the characters enter the rapists' homes to execute their plans of killing them.

6) Killer Mother: Because they are denied justice, both Sridevi and Raveena Tandon's characters kill the rapists, one by one.

Has anybody seen Maatr? How was it?

I hear MOM isn't that great except if you're fans of the actors and they do a good job
But it's generating a lot of buzz which Maatr didn't

Sridevi's movie is produced by Boney Kapoor and has more famous actors in supporting roles while Raveena 's movie was a low scale production with unknown actors I think in supporting roles

Besides Sridevi is Sridevi, she can still sell movie on her name while Raveena is pretty much done and dusted

Well the Pak controversy delayed the release... else it would have come around the Durga Rani Singh week last year.

Both the films have the standard rape revenge template. The difference lies in the TREATMENT.

Boney Kapoor got the best in business to make the film. The film scores high in all departments except on the predictable story.  The execution is already getting people's interest which has caused excellent WOM trending. Else it would have fallen flat on day 1 itself.

I skimmed through Maatr last week and it reminds you of  90s style filming. Everything was campy. The rape scene in that movie was too graphic and uncomfortable while in MOM  it's implied and executed with just a bird eye view of the moving car on desolate streets of the city, a harrowing score and left everything to the AUDIENCE's imagination. Such an impact that scene has... that you want to give kudos to the aesthetic director, cinematographer Anay and ARR for the most chilling BG score.

I tell you...the entire audience was struck... pin drop silence.

The theme and the premise may have been the same
But the way the films were handled definitely was different
Sri Devi is a brilliant powerful actress herself
While Raveena as an actress is not that great

raveena was never capable of solely leading a movie and making it a success even in her prime..it is ridiculous how makers even considered her now. Such movies with lack of face/name values don't even get an initial and that is exactly what happened.

Sridevi was India's first female superstar and her name holds gigantic credibility as a star and also an actor. The fact that movies like EV or Mom get a 2.5 cr start indicates that. Trust me these movies would not have even made 1cr on day 1 with the likes of raveena etc..and sridevi is a powerhouse performer again which raveena never really has been..

Agree the story in MOM, the rape-revenge has been done to death. But it is all in the execution.
I grew up on South movies and one of the most traumatizing things about them was, a sister or even a lover would get raped by a villain or villains, it would be graphic with the girl in a sari and being disrobed by one guy or multiple guys, their faces contorted with rage, hers fearful. the sari would be off, she would be standing in a blouse and a petticoat and screaming. Next scene she would be dropped off somewhere, clothes torn, crying and the scene after would be a suicide by hanging or throwing oneself on a track. This would set in motion the revenge.

Matr was in that mold for me. In MOM, what made the difference was how the rape was treated. The horror of the rape was shown by what the girl felt. How she scrubbed herself fully clothed under a shower, her reaction on seeing her dad, her screaming at one point seeing Sri, not seeing the light.

Most of all, the acting was what set apart a run of the mill movie. I could say things about the script, but what elevated it was the acting. Sajal especially conveyed the trauma of rape.
