They are your favourite Indian actors, but are they Indian at all?

Yahoo India Lifestyle

When we look at these faces, they strike as one of our own - as though he is the guy that steals glances, as though she is the girl next door.

But you know what? They are not that next door' at all, for many of our Bollywood celebrities were born in a country afar and a lot of them still hold their foreign citizenships.

Let's take a look at actors from the Indian movie industry that were either born foreigners or have now taken up a different citizenship.

Deepika Padukone

Renowned badminton player Prakash Padukone's elderest daughter was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on January 5th 1986. This restricted the baby girl's right of being a natural born Indian citizen. But the girl grew up to be Bollywood sensation and very much Indian Deepika Padukone.

Katrina Kaif

Of all the actors we are going to list down, Katrina's non-Indian status is most widely known and talked about. It's interesting that having spent over a decade working in the Indian film industry the actress has neither adopted the country's citizenship, nor learned the language. Katrina still hold a UK passport.

Akshay Kumar

We have to give it to the Rustom' actor for all this influential video messages he records and sends out to his fans, be it about respecting women, or standing by our forces. It might come as a surprise that the National Award winner is in fact a Canadian since being offered the citizenship. Though he stated, "I have a strong affiliation with Canada and also have dual citizenship. It's a place that I really love"the open terrain, the scenery, the wide roads and the clean streets. It's the complete contrast of my homeland, although I love India for all the opposite reasons and it's my home. I was honoured with a doctorate degree from The University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada, for my contribution to the Indian film industry and for my social work in Canada." that India does not acknowledge the concept of Dual citizenship fundamentally makes the actor a Canadian

Alia Bhatt

She was seen promoting her young adult fans to vote during the 2014 elections and looked every bit excited about her the propaganda. Unfortunately, the Student of The Year actress cannot exercise her right to vote and contribute her bit towards the formation of Indian government, rather she has no rights to begin with. The actress is British.

Imran Khan

Unfortunately, just like Alia Bhatt, Aamir Khan's nephew too is restricted from voting. He is an American. He was born in Wisconsin, USA but moved to India following his parent's divorce. The actor was just a toddler at the time.

Nargis Fakri

She stunned us as a rare find to the Indian movie goer in her debut movie Rockstar, but what's more striking is her ethnicity. The half Pakistani-half Czech actress is an American citizen.

Jacqueline Fernandez

This beauty has distinctive features that one can ogle at for hours at stretch. So while you take in her beauty, do bear in mind that the Houseful actress owes her charm to her Sri Lankan connection - yes, Jacqueline is a Sri Lankan by birth.

Amy Jackson

Another gorgeous actress who has been bagging roles one after the other, not only in Bollywood, but also down south is Amy. Tamil and Telugu movie makers are not getting enough of this fair lady. But how many of you know that the actress is British to the core?

Sarah Jane Dias

A successful host, actress and VJ, Sarah is of course an Indian, else how would you explain her winning the Miss India title in 2007. But this multi-talented diva is not a naturally born citizen, it was the skies of Muscat that echoed with her first cries. And here's a quick bite - she has also donned crown the crown of Miss India Oman before putting on the sash of Miss India.

Evelyn Sharma

Yeh Jawani Hai Dewani might have been her major breakthrough in India, but she is famous as an International model. She made her acting debut in the British movie Turn Left before turning east and landing at the Indian Airport. Evelyn is a German citizen by the way.

There is a difference between being ethnically Indian and nationally one. Kalki is nationally an Indian citizen but ethnically French? Most on the list are ethnically Indian and know the language. What's the big deal about that? If you think Amy Jackson is Indian you have to be vapid. Edited by eating_orange - 7 years ago

LOL.
Why are they using the term 'natural born citizen' for Indians nationality? They don't even know what it means.

Sarah Jane Dias would be declared from birth an Indian citizen in Oman. Don't write articles which are so stupid and shows a lack of basic knowledge. Non-natives in the Gulf states rarely get citizenship--this is general knowledge.

Deepika too, her birthplace doesn't mean she wasn't given the citizenship of her parents.

I hope the government ensures that Indians get to work in BW. They should restrict foreigners to highly skilled ones. That will keep people like Nargis and Katrina out m

Granting of citizenship[edit]

Citizenship at the commencement of the constitution of India[edit]

Persons domiciled in the territory of India as on 26 November 1949 automatically became Indian citizens by virtue of operation of the relevant provisions of the Indian Constitution coming into force, and most of these constitutional provisions came into force on 26 January 1950. The Constitution of India also made provision regarding citizenship for migrants from the territories of Pakistan which had been part of India before partition.

Citizenship by birth[edit]

Any person born in India on or after 26 January 1950, but prior to the commencement of the 1986 Act on 1 July 1987, is a citizen of India by birth. A person born in India on or after 1 July 1987 is a citizen of India if either parent was a citizen of India at the time of the birth. Those born in India on or after 3 December 2004 are considered citizens of India only if both of their parents are citizens of India or if one parent is a citizen of India and the other is not an illegal migrant at the time of their birth. In September 2013, Bombay High Court gave a judgement that a birth certificate, passport or even an Aadhaar card alone may not be enough to prove Indian citizenship, unless the parents are Indian citizens.[2]

Citizenship by descent[edit]

Persons born outside India on or after 26 January 1950 but before 10 December 1992 are citizens of India by descent if their father was a citizen of India at the time of their birth.

Persons born outside India on or after 10 December 1992 are considered citizens of India if either of their parents is a citizen of India at the time of their birth.

From 3 December 2004 onwards, persons born outside of India shall not be considered citizens of India unless their birth is registered at an Indian diplomatic mission within one year of the date of birth. In certain circumstances it is possible to register after one year with the permission of the Central Government. The application for registration of the birth of a child must be made to an Indian diplomatic mission and must be accompanied by an undertaking in writing from the parents of the child that he or she does not hold the passport of another country.

Citizenship by registration[edit]

The Central Government may, on an application, register as a citizen of India under section 5 of the Citizenship Act 1955 any person (not being an illegal migrant) if s/he belongs to any of the following categories:

  • a person of Indian origin who is ordinarily resident in India for seven years before making application under Section 5(1)(a) (throughout the period of twelve months immediately before making application and for six years in the aggregate in the eight years preceding the 12 months).
  • a person of Indian origin who is ordinarily resident in any country or place outside undivided India;
  • a person who is married to a citizen of India and is ordinarily resident in India for seven years before making an application for registration;
  • minor children of persons who are citizens of India;
  • a person of full age and capacity whose parents are registered as citizens of India.
  • a person of full age and capacity who, or either of his parents, was earlier citizen of independent India, and has been residing in India for one year immediately before making an application for registration;
  • a person of full age and capacity who has been registered as an overseas citizen of India for five years, and who has been residing in India for one year before making an application for registration.

Citizenship by naturalisation[edit]

Citizenship of India by naturalisation can be acquired by a foreigner (not illegal migrant) who is ordinarily resident in India for 12 years (throughout the period of 12 months immediately preceding the date of application and for 11 years in the aggregate in the 14 years preceding the 12 months) and other qualifications as specified in Third Schedule to the Citizen Act.

...As for Akshay, I don't really understand his case, Indian law does not allow for dual citizenship. At the most he has an OCI.
