What's your opinion on Sridevi as an actress?

Firstly wanna say, This isn't not a bashing post. I've heard all great things about Sridevi how great she's as an actress, most versatile & one of the greatest, she's legend, everyone respects her and all.

But, frankly speaking I've never liked her acting (English Vinglish is the only exception). I never understood the hype about her so called great acting. I've watched all of her popular & acclaimed performances but never liked her in any of them. Her dialogue delivery is pathetic so is her voice modulation and her accent. Her voice always sounds so shrill & shaky. Its been decades she's working in Hindi films, still I don't see any changes in those departments. Its really off-putting.

PS - I genuinely wanna know forum members opinion on Sridevi's acting. For me she is an overrated actress!

I agree.
Her hindi diction and accent is such a turn off plus her cutesy act in films bore me.
I loved her in Sadma and English Vinglish but in other movies not so much.

I would rate Rekha higher in ever department if compared to Sri.

How on earth you want her to change her voice? She has been born with a shrill voice, but she's become a superstar despite it.

But, how do you rate her as an actress? That was my question. Even Rekha has had bad accent & her dialogue delivery was extremely poor at the early stage of her career. She's too from South but she has worked on those departments and improved herself & became a good actress with a fine dialogue delivery.

Exactly! I cringe so hard everytime I get to hear Sridevi's "Pakro, Pakro, Pakro" in the BG of Chaandni's title track.

I have watched her since I was a child in multiple South movies and for me, she is a legend. For me, her best work is not in BW, it's in the South. IDK where to find English Subtitles for South movies, but I can give you a list if you are interested.
The thing about Sridevi is, she was just 13 or 14 when she debuted as a lead actress and she stood toe to toe with Kamal Hassan with movies that are still some of the best in his filmography (this was in the 70s). I assume you do know about Kamal (not being sarcastic, not many in BW do), These were her early movies and the age she was, she was directed by legendary directors like K Balachander, Balu Mahendra, Bharatiraja, I know few who excelled like that from the beginning. I know her filmography best in Tamil, but she has some equally good films in Telugu. I am least familiar with her work in Malayalam and none in Kannada.

BW gave her quite ridiculous movies frankly mostly and her co-stars were not up to her standard IMO. She shines best with an actor as good as her. I truly don't like her much as a person, but as an actress she is what the word legend and icon is made for.

For me, she is that. But taste is subjective so if at the end of it you don't agree, hey what makes the world interesting is we all have different tastes.

ETA: Her voice is very shrill. As for pronunciation, she has a very South Indian accent IMO.

NP - Watch Sadma, Chaalbaaz. Watch her get angry in Naagina .
See the scene in Chandani when Rishi goes back to her, sits on wheelchair and gets up to surprise her. She was brilliant, no dialogues, just expressed her happiness in seeing him cured . Pure brilliance.

She was a very good actress. Even in silly roles, she shined.

She used her eyes and face very well.

I can write essays, but you have to see the brilliance yourself. Problem is that she acted in too many bad movies as well .

I have not seen many of her movies, but there's a Telugu movie called Kshana Kshanam. Her expressions and acting are on point. Her voice and dialogue delivery may be irritating to some, but in a way that's her USP. It makes her stand out.

That song was silly , she should not have sung it. But at that time, everything that Sridevi did, sold like hot potato. That Chandani song was chart buster.
One day we may look back and say - How come Alia and Shradda get to sing songs in movies😆
