I don't think early 90's belonged to Amitabh. After he entered politics, his popularity faded (though Shehenshah was moderately hit. Khudah Gawah was the peak period of Sridevi. In mid 80s she had refused to star with Amitabh, as they were not providing her the meaty role. She probably paired with him because she had a meatier role than Amitabh this time. So, it is wrong to credit the success of Khudah Gawah to Amitabh.
Same thing can be said about HAHK. That year, competition was between two movies. 1942 Love story and HAHK. Anil and Madhuri were hit pair till then. But Madhuri broke up with Vidhu Vinod Chopra. VVC came with a Anil Kapoor, Monisha Koirala (who was termed as the next sensation after Saudagar) and R. D. Barman. But Madhuri won the battle. A crappy song "Didi Tera Dewar Diwana" won over the melody "Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To", proving she is bigger than Anil Kapoor. She cemented it by giving another hit Raja with a new comer. Now someone else is been credited for the success of the movie 😆90s superstars were not males.
No, in the 90s, female actors actually left a mark. Imagine Salman/SRK playing second-fiddle to Manisha in Khamoshi/Dil Se. It won't happen today.
90s had female actors in lead/prominent roles more often than not. Whether it was Manisha, Madhuri, or Sri Devi..
I agree on the Amitabh stance. Amitabh Bachchan's only big opener/Hit in the 90s was Hum. He'd peaked by mid 80s, so yeah.
