Laura(SPOILER ALERT)
Mystery movie with twists :D

Firstly, spectacular acting by the man playing Waldo Lydecker - Clifton Webb - especially his poise and dialogue-delivery 👏 I shall never forget him and now I think I will look for movies to watch that star him. This movie was all about him for me, found myself waiting for him to make an appearance on screen 😆 😃

It was nice to see an actor who has impressed me greatly in Rebecca, Judith Anderson, she was very good here as well.. her dialogue delivery was perfect, reflecting her urbane ways and all.

Gene Tierney is such a beautiful looking woman, looks like perfection.. I wanted to see her in color.. but her acting was a liiittle bit underwhelming...maybe it was the type of character she was playing. *shrugs* ..Anyway, she looked like an absolute dream, especially in her introduction sequence..⭐️

So, this story is about a woman named Laura and the investigation of her murder involving a bunch of suspects - Waldo, the rich powerful journalist who was a mentor to Laura; Shelby, Laura's fiance; Ann who is Laura's friend and Shelby's lover.

The first scene itself was so intriguing.. I think the first scene was one showing around Laura's house, the direction keeps you hooked. Direction is excellent all through the movie. Anyway.

The detective starts falling in love with the image of Laura during her investigation and I really didn't expect Laura to be real and alive until after a couple of scenes ...I thought detective went into a dream.. so that was a slow surprise 😃 And I knew Waldo was her murderer, seeing how possessive he was about her.

Also, the maid was a stellar character with her frightened face and loyal ways.. wonder who the actress is!:)

Nice movie, never boring even for a minute.. oh and, I will always remember this dialogue -

..this movie has great dialogues, especially by Waldo. 😃 I thoroughly enjoyed his reactions and snobbish uber-refined ways - a wonderfully sketched character :)

And the little scene involving cute bantering between Shelby, Laura and the cook at a party 😃

Loved the script!!

@Betty, thankyou for the recommendation yaar ❤️⭐️

My pleasure Angel and as usual great review :-)

Did Gene's performance fell short? I cannot recall... But I remember thinking that she absolutely looked the part of beautiful Madison Avenue executive, and that nobody else could've suited the mysterious Laura better ❤️ ⭐️

I think Gene Tierney is one of the finest actress of that era or HW itself and the most underrated

Her roles ranged from period dramas to contemporaries, from serious to comedies, she did it all with ease or made it look effortless :)

But we can agree to disagree on that :-)

She lost her looks soon may be bcz of her illness and tragedies she suffered (Also people looked older sooner then) and I don't think she did many color movies but "Leave her Heaven" was good, another one is "Heaven can wait" (haven't seen it)

You might also like "The Razor's edge" with your favorite Clifton Webb and the hunk of those times Tyrone Power(very good actor too) Tyrone and Tierney made a great pair ❤️ ⭐️

It's an adaptation of Somerset Maugham's novel, even he's a character in that movie :-)

*************************************

The actress playing housekeeper is Dorothy Adams, she mostly did TV shows in the 50s

Thank you for the gif and the dialogue 😎 great one-liner, huh? You can find many such one liners in old classics.

Thankyou thankyou 😃

Yes she was perfect as a mysterious woman...:D I agree with you Betty, but just that she fell a liiitttle bit short, for me while watching, could be my mood too, who can say :p

..thankyou for the recommendations, Betty 😃 added those movies to my watchlist! :)

We had Somerset Maugham, the grumpy man in our school syllabus! 😲 Didn't know he was into acting... I can't wait to see him! we had a couple of stories by SM, I always thought he was irritable :p

Dorothy Adams... i see i see :)

aye welcome! yup, one-liners and witty conversations were perhaps the best in old movies as far as I've seen! 😃

Chungking Express (CONTAIN SPOILERS - ALERT!)

Simple beautiful movie by the beautiful Wong Kar-Wai!

Set in Hong Kong during the 90s, this movie is about two cops who are going through break-ups, so there are two stories in the movie. First part is about a Cop...who was born in May :p

His girlfriend breaks up with him on April fool's and he is confused if she has left him for real and gives himself time until his birthday on May 1, he keeps buying canned pineapple with expiry date on May 1.. may look illogical but... that's how people are while dealing with emotions 😛 ..he's so cute in that he feels depressed yet deals with it so funnily, there's still positivity within him and doesn't take himself too seriously :)

All his dialogues were cute lol, he has a cute mind. Not only is he cute from within, but so so sooo handsome and has such a cute smile 😭

He meets a mysterious blonde-wigged woman twice, first time when there was 0.01 cm distance between them and next time when he decides that he will fall in love with first woman that enters the bar and it's her!

Both have a cute chat lol, and then she falls asleep so he takes her to a hotel room and leaves before she wakes.. the way he washes her shoes really made me wonder about little acts of kindness some people are so capable of..

His desperation to find another love was actually kinda sad... but what a cute person.

So this cop again bumps into another girl(Faye) with 1 cm distance between them, and 6 hours later she falls in love with another cop 😆 ...here begins our second story! :)

.."another" cop played by amazing Tony Leung, who has broken up with his air hostess girlfriend. Faye is a shy awkward girl who works at a cafe where this cop orders food frequently. She likes him but cannot bring herself to tell him...and in an effort to cheer him up, she renovates the cop's apartment unbeknownst to him.

I'm finding it difficult to write the synopsis, I'll jump over to review 😳

STORY --- deals with changeable nature of love or romance, loneliness, our desire to have a companion, how people cope with loneliness even if it's illogical or silly, kindness, the selfless side that love brings out in us..

DIRECTION is par-excellence yaar, what can I say ...the chasing scenes in the bginning were so beautifully shot 👏 This movie is poetry in motion, Wong Kar-Wai's camera work is sensuous, that's all I can say.

This is the opening scene.. IDK what the technique is called but it's so impactful of the chase between cop and thief in the overpopulated busy Hong Kong

CINEMATOGRAPHY is beautiful... beautiful visuals, neon lights, and other colors... some scenes where the actors are in slow motion and scene around them is in fast-forward were beautiful!

ACTING is again brilliant - by all characters.
Cop #1 is so light-hearted yet he is lonely, you can see that...and despite the break-up and loneliness he deals with life ...cutely :p and this was perfectly acted out by the handsome Takeshi Kaneshiro.

Cop #2 played by Tony Leung - enough said! :) ..he isn't physically attractive in the traditional sense but he's the most charming person I have ever seen... his gestures, expressions, charm makes me blush so hard.. especially in the last scenes from where Faye gets caught renovating his home.

Faye played by Faye Wong was a slow surprise... I thought she was just a shy girl but, her acting surprised me especially at the end.. she was the star for me in this movie - in terms of acting.

MUSIC is again spectacular. The background score in the beginning scenes, the scenes where cop #1 runs track, etc were beautiful. One of beautiful songs was performed by Faye Wong,

There are some things I love about this movie... one is the act of kindness both cop #1 and Faye show.. without expecting it to be acknowledged or even seen, they act purely out of love. It's invaluable, what they do..

And the way cop #2 talks to everything in his house :D ..asking the towel, shirt, toys, soap not to feel bad about the breakup.. lol, that was heartbreakingly cute..

Also, what's with Wong Kar-Wai and food stalls/cafes 😆 ..off the three movies, I've watched so far, food stalls/cafes/cafeteria are places where love stories blossom..

A Better Tomorrow

I have missed John Woo! 😃..A classic action-crime Woo cinema, set in Hong Kong during the 80s.

Is a story about two brothers whose paths cross... the older brother who belongs to underworld and the young brother who becomes a police man. The older brother decides to leave the underworld when young one gets into police service ...but in his 'last job' fails and he gets caught and is put behind the bars. During this, their father gets killed... and young one holds old one responsible for their father's death. Young one is even more agitated when he isn't given promotion because of his familial background.

Anyway, this movie shows how one can never be clean once they get into underworld.

Chow Yun-Fat is a charming actor! :D ..he was so stylish in this movie, before becoming a cripple that is... this is what I love about John Woo - he presents at least that one character in his movies in a very filmy - stylish way.

This movie had all classic John Woo elements --- stylish slow motion action scenes, those scenes involving multiple parties pointing guns at each other, AMAZING BACKGROUND MUSIC, stylish character/s, sentimental friendship and familial love, dramatic ending after a full-on action packed exchange of fire. I always love the characters of "the bad guy" in Woo films 😆 ..although the villain wasn't that impressive, still he is that stylish Woo villain :) One can actually notice here that Woo's direction has gotten better over the years.

And what do I say about background music...so reminiscent of the 80s! 😭 ...and people's clothes too, I love 80s clothing :)

I loved the scenes between the brothers before their father's death.. also, that performance by the kids, it was beautiful!!

Watch it, if you are nostalgic about John Woo. :)

PS --- The only thing missing in this movie was Woo's signature flying pigeons 💔

Bold - Somerset Maugham himself is not in the movie, as far I know he never took up movie acting

He is played by the actor Herbert Marshall in that movie. In other words Herbert Marshall plays Somerset Maugham in "The razor's edge"

Sorry, I think I wasn't clear

So many of Maugham's work have been adapted into movies, often more than once...

One of them is his semi-autobiographical novel " Of Human Bondage", considered a masterpiece, it was adapted more than once

I saw the Bette Davis version :-) Another one "The Letter" again with Bette Davis

I am sure I've seen many others, cannot recall right now

Oops, sorry Betty, I misread! :)

You've seen so many movies and have a very wide knowledge of movies, Betty:)
