CRITIC'S REVIEW
OF SWEET NOTHINGS...

STORY:
Millennials Adi and Tara are in love and must deal with the most millennial of problems: commitment phobia and the pressure to appear emotionally detached.

REVIEW:
Throughout the movie, Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Tara (Shraddha Kapoor) seem to be running after trains or buses in motion, barely getting in before it's too late - a great metaphor for the love lives of people of today's generation.

OK Jaanu: Official trailer
OK Jaanu: Kaara Fankaara song
OK Jaanu: Full song lyric video
OK Jaanu: The Humma Song
OK Jaanu: Enna Sona song

Adi is a video game developer with the American dream; Tara is an architect, destined for Paris. But they lock eyes at a wedding and all their plans go out of the window. They flirt, take a trip together, move in and decide to date for as long as they're both in Mumbai.

The thing that works most in OK Jaanu's favour is its screenplay, kept intact from its Tamil predecessor. It is a scene-for-scene remake and capitalizes on great moments from the original film. The music (largely retained) with Gulzar's new lyrics also does a throwback to OK Kanmani in the best way possible.

In this seemingly tailor-made role, Aditya Roy Kapur shines as a goofy, shorts-wearing man-child. Shraddha is mostly sincere too, but there are scenes where you can't help but flashback to Nithya Menen, who had charmed people's socks off with her performance in OK Kanmani. Adi and Tara's impulsive infatuation is countered by Gopi uncle (Naseeruddin Shah) and Charu aunty's (Leela Samson) golden-jubilee marriage; both senior actors grounding the movie and saving it from becoming frivolous.

In spite of its Pros, one can't deny that unsure young lovers and their battle with commitment phobia is a tired topic to begin with. Moreover, if you've seen the original Tamil film, it'll get tedious after a while, knowing exactly what's coming next.

If you haven't seen the original though, you're sure to walk out of the theatre with a warm-fuzzy feeling.

Directed by: Shaad Ali
Produced by: Mani Ratnam, Karan Johar
Cast: Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor
Duration: 2 hours 17 minutes

Shaad Ali's previous directorial titled Kill Dil' had literally killed us. And now, he is back with OK Jaanu' which is a remake of Mani Ratnam's Tamil flick O Kadhal Kanmani'. We all know that Shaad Ali had directed Saathiya' in 2002 which was a remake of Ratnam's Alaipayuthey'. The Rani Mukerj and Vivek Oberoi-starrer was loved by everyone and it was great romantic movie. So, does Shaad once again recreate the magic by this remake or not? Let's find out in our OK Jaanu' movie review...
OK Jaanu' is about Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Tara (Shraddha Kapoor). The two meet at a friend's wedding, after that they meet for few more times, and eventually fall in love. They decide to stay in a live-in relationship. After being together for six months, now Adi has to go to LA for his work, and Tara has to leave for Paris for her architecture course. Will they be able to stay away from each other? Will there be a happy or a sad ending for this Adi-Tara love story? Will they choose love over profession? To know all these answers you need to watch OK Jaanu'.

The story written by Mani Ratnam is sweet and subtle. Shaad doesn't take the film overboard, and thankfully it doesn't turn into a weep fest. But this does not mean that there no emotional sequences. Ali successfully makes your eyes moist in a couple of sequences and along with that there will also be a smile on your face. The scenes which we are talking about are the ones between Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson. The screenplay too is quite smooth especially in the second half. There are a few scenes in the first half which are a bit drag and are the low point in the film. A couple of times, we were even left with doubts about certain things happening in the film. For example, Tara never tells Adi where her workplace is, still he lands up there. We wonder how!
Well, in a love story, the most important element is the chemistry between the lead pair, and that's where OK Jaanu' hits the bull's eye. The chemistry between Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor is impeccable. We are thinking what made a filmmaker take a long break of four years to get them back on the screen together. They look WOW together, and the romantic sequences between them are natural. And whenever they say OK JAANU in the film, it will melt your heart. As we are talking about chemistry, let's not forget Naseeruddin Shah and Leela Samson. Well, actually OK Jaanu' might be concentrating on Adi and Tara's love story, but Gopi (Shah) and Charu's (Samson) sweet romance too steals our hearts.
Aditya Roy Kapur looks hot and girls will be going gaga over him after watching the film. However, he has not just looked good, but has also acted very well. Shraddha Kapoor has never looked so gorgeous in any of her previous films. The actress' performance is good, but she overdoes it in a few scenes especially when she has to laugh; it looks fake. However, she has managed well in emotional and romantic portions. By the way, her pelvic move in The Humma Song' is killer. Naseeruddin Shah charms us with his act, but the biggest surprise here is Leela Samson. We wonder what kept her from coming on the big screen. She is fantastic. Prahlad Kakkar and Kitu Gidwani are good in their brief roles. The actors who play Aditya's brother and sister-in-law are amazing.
The music is composed by AR Rahman, and we won't be wrong if we say that this film would have not been so good without Rahman's touch. The music is the best element of the film. From background score to the songs, Rahman makes us feel the romance with his beats. And yes, not to forget Badshah's recreated version of Humma Humma'. Well, it is surely not better than the original one, but it's not too bad as well.
Overall, OK Jaanu' is a perfect dose of romance and emotions. Watch it with your jaanu and even if you don't watch with your jaanu, we are sure after watching the film you will call your jaanu. For singles, this film might just make you want to fall in love soon.

Ok Jaanu Has Fair Start At Multiplexes
Friday 13 January 2016 12.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network
Google+ Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Pinterest Addthis

Ok Jaanu the first major release of the year managed fair opening collections of around 25% at multiplexes which is not bad for this film which does not have much face value especially in terms of the male lead.the fact that it is a new release after a pretty long time may have helped. The opening is far better than the last starrer of Shraddha Kapoor which was Rock On 2 and also much better than Aditya Roy Kapoor's last film which was Fitoor and also featured a heroine like Katrina Kaif. The best opening for the film is in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore though screenings in Bangalore are affected by South Indian releases. Generally South India will be huge affected by the local releases.

Despite the ok start for the film it is still about growth as eventually these type of films need a trend to survive. Also the Hollywood release XXX - Return Of Xander Cage featuring Deepika Padukone will release later and that could affect collections. Xander has one of the weirdest releases in that there are paid previews on Friday evening and the full release is on Saturday. This film will be heavily affected by the big South Indian releases as had potential to do good business there.

The Saturday release could also make big growth harder to come by for Ok Jaanu as the film have less shows on Saturday to accomodate the Hollywood release. If Xander takes a start than that would make it even harder

Ok Jaanu Day One - Xander Paid Previews
Saturday 14 January 2016 11.30 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Ok Jaanu had a pretty fair start in the morning but did not go through with the collections in the evening as it collected around 3.75-4 crore nett. The probable reason for this is the release of XXX - Return Of Zander Cage in the evening or the fact the film is only really for youth as it deals with a love in relationship so the evening audience does not really come for it. The collections are still better than films like Rock On 2 and Fitoor but it looked a total of around 4.50 crore nett in the morning. The film was best in the premium multiplexes of Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore while Delhi NCR could have been better and also East Punjab.

Hollywood release XXX - Return Of Xander Cage featuring Deepika Padukone released later in the evening post 6pm and managed a decent collection of around 1.75 crore nett from the paid previews. The looks a better bet than Ok Jaanu at least for the weekend but even this will depend on what happens on Monday and it could be tough to sustain. The South had its own big films so including the huge Khaidi No.150 which took an extraordinary start of over 40 crore gross box office on day one.

In the North, Punjabi film Sarvann had a very poor start and is unlikely to do much at the box office.

Saw the movie..it was alright. The main highlights of the movie are ARK and Shraddha's chemistry plus Naseeruddin Shah's effortless portrayal of the uncle. Also, ARK and Shraddha were pretty good as Adi and Tara individually...much better performances than the ones they showed up with in Aashiqui2. The film is pretty cliched and nothing new...but the original still grabbed more of your attention than this remake. Shaad's direction is nothing extraordinary here...which I think is what brings the film down when compared to Mani's piece. I will say though that if you have not watched the original, this film may really work for you because I genuinely felt the performances were good. The chemistry was great - as I said I enjoyed the leads more so here than in A2. The music is good also. The concept is nothing new but it still works. However, if you've seen the original you're constantly comparing everything and with an ordinary script to begin with, it doesn't help.
One time watch otherwise. If you have nothing better to do..give it a try. 2.5/5

p.s. Aditya is adorable in the film! This guy has such a charming smile throughout.

I walked out of the movie in the initial 15 minutes and went to see La La Land again instead. I reckoned if i couldn't take Aditya and his overacting then how would i be able to bear Shraddha who already gave me a slight headache with her "peechay hato" at the train station. Plus a drunk feminine punjabi guy was shouting all through the movie. I hope someone reported him and got him thrown out.

OK Jaanu Day Two : Return Of Xander Cage Day One
Sunday 15 January 2016 11.00 IST
Box Office India Trade Network

Ok Jaanu could not do much on Saturday with growth of just 15%. This was expected as for one the evenings shows on Friday did not grow much and secondly its shows were hit XXX - The Return of Xander Cage which had its full release on Saturday. The collections of the film remain low and it will find it tough to get good growth on Sunday and even tougher to hold on Monday. For most multiplex films the Delhi and Punjab pocket has to perform well which has not happened here. In South collections are minimal due to big regional releases. The collections of Ok Jaanu over the first two days are as follows.

Friday - 3,50,00,000

Saturday - 4,00,00,000

TOTAL - 7,50,00,000
