"I cried when I was leaving the old Dharma office" - Karan Johar
Karan Johar's Dharma Productions has a new address now. It has moved from Bandra to Andheri, the hub of the film industry. The new Dharma office is huge and designed beautifully. It has a larger than life dreamy feel about it. It has Karan Johar's memories from Kuch Kich Hota Hai till now. On this note, we speak to Karan Johar who talks about moving into a new professional space.
What made you change your office from Bandra to Andheri?
The need was space... it was nothing else. I just felt that Dharma Productions was growing and I needed the space. And if you know anything about real estate and prices and properties, if I had to find this kind of space in Bandra, I may have to sell myself. So I didn't want to do that. So that's why I moved in Andheri.
The Karan Johar is saying that he had to sell himself?
It's true. I couldn't afford this kind of space in Bandra. I haven't reached that stage where I can buy this kind of area in Bandra and feel very happy. I would love to have it in Bandra because it's closer to my home. But I love where I am.
You must have had an emotional connection with old office. It must have been difficult for you to move out?
I have been in that office since sixteen years, so many directors have come up with their first film in that space, actors like Varun (Dhawan), Sidharth (Malhotra), Alia (Bhatt)... They made me make a speech. So the last day of office was very emotional for all of us.

So Shah Rukh (Khan) and I were there and we both made a speech. And I started crying. From Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham onwards right up to Kapoor & Sons, that's been our distance in that office from one family drama to another family drama. I was very emotional. I started crying. I couldn't speak for three minutes and then I had to drink some water and then I addressed everybody. We were about hundred cramped in that space and it was very special evening for me. I will always remember it.
