Television personality Rajeshwari Sachdev has been receiving calls from underworld extortionists demanding Rs 40 lakh from the actress as 'protection money', police sources are quoted to have said.
The actress, who has been receiving the extortion call for the past few months, decided to move the police last week and lodged a formal complaint of threatening and extortion at Versova police station in north-west Mumbai on June 14, the sources said.
The complaint, lodged by her father Indrajeet Sachdev, states about the threats his daughter has been receiving for the past few months from an unknown caller. The complaint does not name any particular person or a gang as responsible for the threat calls, police sources said.
DCP (zone VI) Amitabh Gupta confirmed that Sachdev had lodged a complaint at Versova police station about the threats she received. "The matter is pending investigation," he said.
When contacted Rajeshwari said: "I have received the threats and as a responsible citizen I thought it was my duty to inform the police about the same. I have done it by lodging a complaint."
On whether she had sought police protection, she said: "Let us wait and see, I have taken the first step of informing the police, I have done my duty, I leave the rest to the police."
