Phobia movie review: Radhika Apte doesn't put a foot wrong as she goes about scaling it up gradually

A horror flick set in an empty apartment in which things go bump, using standard, familiar tropes, and still able to create freshness? It is a tough ask, but 'Phobia' pulls it off with pizazz, helped by a crackerjack plot and performances.

A flat with an eerily locked room, a cracked mirror, an about-to-be-bloodied bath-tub, a black cat and fleeting apparitions. And a young woman suffering from trauma which has led to agoraphobia : Mehek (Radhika Apte) cannot step out, because there lurks evil. But, and this is what the film asks, as every similar film does, what if the danger is inside?

Kripalani, who had helmed the scary Ragini MMS', delivers a smart, intelligent spook-fest which keeps us on the edge. His leading lady knows exactly what to do : Radhika Apte doesn't put a foot wrong as she goes about scaling it up gradually- being alarmed, scared, petrified, and outright panicked-with-blind-terror.

Part of the skill-set required to do an effective film in this genre is to know when to ratchet up the tension, and when to let it go. The inclusion of other characters in this chamber drama does exactly that : Satyadeep Mishra as the pal who wants to be more, Ankur Vikal as the creepy neighbor under suspicion for having done away with his lady love, Yahaswini Dayama as a friendly, inquisitive girl who keeps showing up even when she's not wanted, an older sister who may or not be a loving sibling, and a therapist who wants to help Mehek get past her phobia.

Many elements remind you of other famous movies set in ghostly apartments, combined with those which send you into found footage' territory. But Phobia' stays mostly its own film. A couple of irritants do crop up, resulting in the tautness slipping a little, and in a few sequences which feel slapped on.

But they don't really take away from the impact of the film. And Apte keeps you reeled in. She's consistently been doing interesting work. With this one she has staked fair claim to be one of the best acts in Bolly town. Phobia' is a genuinely frightener, so far away from those unintentionally comic monstrosities it keeps slinging out, that you feel like cheering.

Keep your eyes slitted, and be on your guard, because something wicked this way comes.

Movie Review: Phobia' is Frighteningly Good!

Stutee Ghosh
Today, 13 minutes ago

It must be said right at the beginning that Phobia is truly frightening. An Indian psychological thriller, directed by Pawan Kriplani, it will definitely send a chill down your spine, quite unlike the unwittingly comic "horror" films we are used to watching.

Phobia's strength lies in the fact that it uses the horror genre intelligently rather than falling for stale motifs and clichd sound effects to peddle it's fear factor!

Radhika Apte plays Mehak, an artist who suffers from severe agoraphobia - the fear of open spaces. The foreboding tone and interesting plot twists that hint at something sinister, along with Apte's own brilliance ensure that viewers are constantly at the edge of their seats. And if you are like me, then you will also be clutching the box of popcorn with all your might and shriek with every sound!

Radhika Apte plays Mehak, an artist who suffers from severe Agoraphobia - the fear of open spaces. (Photo:Facebook/Phobia)

Director Pawan Kriplani approaches the tale with cold and chilling efficiency. Radhika Apte, Satyadeep Mishra and Nivedita Bhattacharya are remarkably effective in their respective roles. It's interesting to see that while Mehak's phobia plays out on-screen, we find ourselves questioning our own initial assumptions.

The line between reality and phobia keeps blurring helping us hold on to the narrative right till the end.

Phobia should be your pick if you are above 18 years of age (Yes, it has an A certificate), only if blood and horror don't freak you out!

I'll give it 4 QUINTS out of 5.

In Pawan Kripalani's "Phobia", Radhika Apte plays an artist who develops agoraphobia (an irrational fear of open or public places) after a traumatic incident. She is terrified of strangers and mortally afraid of stepping out of her house.

Her behavior is disruptive enough for her family to consider putting her in a mental hospital, but her friend and secret admirer Shaan (Satyadeep Misra) feels otherwise. Convinced that living in a different house and surroundings will help Mehak (Apte) get over her irrational fear, he spirits her away to what is by all accounts a very strange house - peeling walls, strange noises and even stranger neighbours, none of which do Mehak's mental state any good.

The idea of isolating a mentally ill person rather than getting her help seems stupid, but once you get over this noticeable flaw in the script, Kripalani manages to produce the required thrills and chills that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

Thanks to Apte's acting, some well-utilised background music and lots of false alarms, "Phobia" manages to convey Mehak's fears and illusions very well. At one point, we don't know whether the events unfolding before us are a figment of her imagination or whether there really are bloodied, severed fingers lying around the house.

In his third film, Kripalani's narrative is tight and the writing (by Pooja Ladha Surti, Arun Sukumarand Pawan Kripalani himself) smart enough that you don't see the end coming from a mile away. Apte, on whose shoulders the entire film rests, carries off the burden remarkably well. She manages to build up Mehak's increasingly jumpy and terrified demeanour as the film progresses.

Satyadeep Misra as Shaan and Yashaswini Dayama as the nosy kid who helps Mehak are good additions to the cast, as is Ankur Vikal, who plays a blade-wielding neighbour with a creepy smile.

Reminiscent of his first film "Ragini MMS", Kripalani passes the basic horror film test - he scares you enough to make you jump out of your seat and intrigues you enough to make you stay till the end.

Phobia: a nerve-wracking ride

entertainment (general)

Phobia makes for a nerve-wracking ride. It sucks you into the world of artiste Mehak (Radhika Apte) who suffers from an anxiety disorder called agoraphobia, following a sexual assault by a cab driver. The disorder is to do with fear unfamiliar spaces and can immobilise a person to an extent that they'd not even step out of their own home. Even as her sister debates if Mehak needs institutional care her close friend Shaan (Satyadeep Mishra) relocates her to a friend's strange, artistically run down house. It is peopled by a black cat, the ghost of a dead woman and apparitions and spirits rising up from a bath tub. Then there are many whispers and voices rising up from the drainpipe. If that wasn't enough there's a weird neighbour Manu (Ankur Vikal) who is seeking laughter therapy to rid himself of his own anxieties and a kooky lady searching for a non-existent husband.

In a nutshell all the usual claptraps of a horror film. No wonder you begin to question things rather rationally--why did the friend shift her to the strange house (don't most families in horror films do this out of sheer necessity of plot?) or why leave her all alone when she has a history of illness (another convenient contrivance of the plot). Why this wilful courting of trouble? All to take the story and chills and thrills forward? But then in Phobia nothing might quite be what it seems. The film uses the handy tools and devices of scary movies and turns them on the head in the smart twist of a climax. Of course the finale leaves many questions unanswered, leaves things unexplained and can make many in the audience feel utterly befuddled. A close reading of the script might even reveal many a sloppy plothole but the overriding feeling of fear is so consistently maintained that you forget everything else. Phobia is relentlessly scary. It's as though you are living within the mind of Mehak, her unending claustrophobia and suffocation become your own. There is just one small window of comic relief in the film"a sance scene, a desperate attempt to call the spirits and talk to the dead. And just when you relax and laugh through your jolts and shocks it again puts you back in the panic mode.

Much of the terror resides in Radhika Apte's eyes. She is the film, all by herself, that too in just a single setting. The film draws on the essential horror from her. The performance is an external manifestation of the workings of her inner mind. And Radhika she is sensational as a woman living with her own demons"be it fighting with her sister or being flirtatious with friends, slurring on her speech or travelling miles (metaphorically) to leave garbage bag just outside her house. Or just being radiantly vulnerable. In her we get a radically inventive scream queen. All hail her!

Mehak Deo (Radhika Apte) is a highly skilled artist. After a terrifying incident of sexual assault, Mehak develops agoraphobia, the fear of public spaces. To cope with her fear, she starts to stay with her sister who seeks help from a psychologist. Being holed up in the house for months and because of her panic attacks becoming a problem for her sister, Mehak is unconsciously moved out to another apartment by her close friend Shaan (Satyadeep Mishra).

If Mehak's mental state is already any less difficult, the new apartment has its own set of mysteries too. The girl who owns the apartment has been missing and Mehak soon starts to believe that she is dead and has been killed.

Strange things happen with Mehak and it is kept ambiguous if it is her mind playing the tricks until the climax.

Phobia Review: Script Analysis

Pavan Kripalani is a genius to have worked on a script like Phobia. Right from the film's concept of throwing light on the concept of phobia and building it into a fine thriller is a difficult job. The tight screenplay of the film keeps the audiences riveted to the screens right from the word go.

The first half is terrifying and he manages to leave the viewers confused as the lines between the film being a psychological thriller or a supernatural one are thinned.

In the second half, one particularly finds content missing and it's mainly the performance that keeps the film afloat. Also, the plot has its haphazard moments in the second half as it rushes to reach a conclusion that many may not understand.

There are also intentionally comic elements added in the plot that come as a relief after a scary build up.

Characters are brilliantly written and especially the sidekicks such as Manu, the strange neighbour and Nikki also the young college-going neighbour. They are blended in the story at crucial points and keep the story moving ahead.

Bollywood rarely touches such genres and hence this film has a sense of an achievement for even attempting such a subject.

Plenty of spine-chilling moments come and go all through the film, making it quite difficult for the weak-hearted.

Phobia Review: Star Performance

Radhika Apte has been on a roll. After many minor roles that made an impact, she gets a biggie this time. As the protagonist struggling to deal with herself, Apte pulls off a mammoth of an act. She seems so convincing that for moments one even finds oneself relating to her situation and completely pulled into the story. She excels in scenes of her going through the panic attacks.

Satyadeep Mishra fits the bill perfectly as Shaan, the friend and lover of Mehak. His natural act gives his character the right touch of realism.

Yashaswani and Ankur Vikal make up for a strong supporting cast.

Phobia Review: Direction, Music

From the first frame of Phobia, there is something unsettling about it. It completely sucks you in with its intelligent story-telling. Well-paced, the first half takes a good amount of time to establish its complicated plot.

The cinematography is clever and manages to make ample of references offline from the story. The director's talent can be observed in little things such as when there is a supernatural theme build-up, the character of Nikki is shown wearing a funny Tee mocking ghosts.

Where the film fails is to keep up its agility in the second half. Slightly moving off from where it started, the film stretches in an untoward manner. The limp second half affects the film's climax too.

The lighting is carefully shown according to the protagonist's state of mind which complements the story.

A couple of scenes are gory with all the blood but I have to say they are impressively bold compared to what we usually see since Bollywood prefers to tone it down. Gladly, the censor board didn't touch them!

The background score works its magic for most of the time and hence you remain alert for what's coming ahead. There is only one song in the film and it comes at a good juncture without hampering the flow of the story.

Phobia Review: The Last Word

Phobia is a step ahead for Bollywood to explore the genres of psychological thrillers. With Radhika Apte's fine performance, this film is a must-watch for those who love experimental cinema. I am going with a 3/5.

Phobia Veerapan Waiting Heading Towards Disaster

The new releases Phobia, Veerapan and Waiting opened to a very dull response with the first named registering 2-3% collections and Veerapan getting up to 7-8% due to 10% plus response in single screens in Maharashtra and Central India. Single screens in North and East are as bad as the multiplexes. Waiting was as Phobia but with lowere screen count.

There was another release Fredrick and with a name like that nothing more than washout collections could be expected. Not that titles of Phobia, Veerapan and Waiting are much better. Veerapan will have the best collections on day one but they will be very low and there is not much hope afterwards as these sort of films hold little appeal outside places around Maharashtra.

The Hollywood release Angry Birds managed the best occupancy of around 15% and though the release is not very wide it could turn out to be the best bet this week.

Sarabjit had steady but low collections in Delhi / UP and East Punjab on day eight. The film crashed out in the rest of the country at the start of the second week.

Phobia movie review: A psychological thriller that will leave you petrified

Directed by Pavan Kripalani, Phobia' has all the elements of a psycho-thriller.

Rating: 3 stars

Director: Pavan Kripalani

Cast: Radhika Apte, Satyadeep Mishra, Ankur Vikal, Yashaswini Dayama

Have you ever seen a person suffering from acrophobia? Well, if not in real life, you would have surely seen one on-screen. Remember 1993 cult film Damini' that starred Meenakshi Seshadri? The story takes form when an unfortunate incident (where she sees a girl being raped) changes her life forever. She is even deemed mentally ill by the lawyer played by late Amrish Puri. The subject of Director Pavan Kripalani's Phobia deals with the issue where a person has an extreme or irrational fear that causes panic attacks and keeps the person away from their loved ones.

Mahek Rao (Radhika Apte), an artist by profession, suffers from acrophobia. One of her symptoms portrayed in the film is an intense and irrational fear of the things around her. Her boyfriend Shaan (Satyadeep Mishra) and sister played by Nivedita Bhattacharya, come to rescue her and take Mahek to a therapist but to no avail. Soon after, Shaan shifts Mahek into his friend's apartment where she starts living alone to overcome her phobia. Later, Mahek discovers that her ex-flatmate Jiah, was brutally killed by her neighbour Manu (Ankur Vikal) who still lives next door. With the help of another neighbour Nikki (Yashasvini Dayama), the two set out on a mission to find out the truth behind the murder, but there is a shocking twist to the story to the story that will surprise you.

Directed by Pavan Kripalani, Phobia' has all the elements of a psycho-thriller, enough to leave you second guessing everything, but it tends loses grip in a few scenes. Keeping in mind that his previous flick Ragini MMS' (inspired from the Hollywood flick Paranormal Activity), managed to send shivers down your spine; Phobia' is a sincere effort at making a psycho flick' with a chilling storyline. One might get a sense of dejavu while watching this film, as certain scenes are strikingly similar to the film 100 Days' where Madhuri Dixit could foresee things which will happen to her in the near future and Ramgopal Varma's thriller Kaun' featuring Urmila Matondkar who lives alone in a bungalow and turned out to be a psycho killer.

Screenplay by Pavan Kripalani and Arun Sukumar is slightly slow in the first half, but has enough to keep you glued to your seat till the last frame. Dialogues by Pooja Ladha Surti are woven nicely with the psychology of a girl who is dealing with acrophobia. The background score is commendable. The VFX and makeup is good, especially in one scene where her finger gets cut off and Satyadeep keeps in the ice box to preserve it.

The film's chill factor' rests on the shoulders of Radhika Apte, who's expressions are flawless and tends to leave the audience wide-eyed and in awe of her performance. Her act in the climax which leads to a bloodbath shakes you to the bone. Her no make up look is just perfect and is close to the reality. Satyadeep Mishra has done a fabulous job as a friend cum admirer in the film. The pain he feels for Radhika's character is believable. Supporting cast Nivedita Bhattacharya, Yashaswini Damaya and Ankur Vikal, have all done justice to their respective roles.

Pavan Kripalani's Phobia' is a good pick this week unless such psycho thrillers are not your cup of tea.

'Phobia' poster. Pic/Eros Now Twitter account @Eros Now

Rarely do you come across a good horror movie in Bollywood which has most often dished out tacky, sex driven B-grade drivel in the genre.

'Phobia' is an intelligent film, which deals with the most unusual of situations. What do you do if you have a phobia of the world outside your home, and to top it, your home itself turns out to be anything but safe for you?

In a crackling performance, Radhika Apte plays Mehak, a single girl in the city suffering from agoraphobia after a traumatic experience. Mehak is confined to a home which is not really a safe haven, since she sees more than she should within those four creepy walls.

Pawan Kripalani, who's earlier scared us with 'Ragini MMS', keeps the narration tight, thus making our hearts stay in our mouth throughout the 100-odd minutes of the film. The best thing about this film is that it doesn't follow the trusted and safe route of horror films and gets pleasantly unpredictable at the end. Another huge plus point is its cast. Radhika doesn't miss a single step as she gives an amazingly convincing performance of being someone who's suffering from a terrible trauma, without going overboard even for a moment.

The other actors who play interesting characters, like Mehak's friend who wants to be her lover (Satyadeep Mishra), the neighbour with a creepy laughter (Ankur Vikal), the sprightly young neighbour (Yashaswini Dayama) and Mehak's sister (Nivedita Bhattacharya), lend good support.

Just one aspect of the story (written by Viki Rajani, who's also the producer of the film) is jarring as it seemed to be fitted in for the convenience of the plot. Why would a person who's under tremendous trauma put up in a new, strange place alone?

But then all's forgiven as it is after long that one watched a 'horror' film which really makes one scared, instead of being disgusted or amused.

Watch this one.
