A traumatic subect at hand indeed..but the narration and forced portrayal of anger from Aish's end failed to leave me hyponitised to a trance. The anger scenes where it required loudness were just too loud...the high decibal levels certainly unbearable for the ears.Someone here said that Dalbir is loud in general and that's just her basic character trait...but on screen that kind of loudness has to translate in such a way that it is pleasant an acceptable to a watch and listen to...I'm sure nobody wants to listen to ear busting...brain thudding shrieking 80% of a movie. She defo had a meaty role indeed...with great scope for performance...if only more work had gone into to the vioice modulation and dialect...there would have been chances of provoking more of the desired empathy levels.
There was 3 scenes where I do think she really did hit the nail on the head and credit should be
given where due.
1) When she gives birth to still born baby...where she refuses to give up the baby's body
Without any diaolouges she manages to captutre and depict pain, anguish, grief and all the sorrows of a mother just merely emoting through face, body and the little nuances...without even having to shed the tear ducts.
2) Family reunion in jail-Best scene of both Randeep and Aish.
For me...this was the scene of the movie where I managed to feel the trauma and the heart ache of the subject at hand...wish the rest of the family members got more scope to perform here too though.
3)Second meeting at Jail where only Dalbir is able to go see Sarbjit.
... where he is on the brink of insanity and has lost all hope...Aish here surprises me again..The way she portrays the consoling sister./encouraging and trying to restore hope and faith in her bro..to not give up and keep fighting.
My other qualm is...I know the story is narrated through the eyes of the sister Dalbir Kaur...but since it is about Sarbjit and even named after him...would hve been nicer and made more sense to see Randeep get more screen time as Sarbjit...i agree with that Review vid...It was 70% Aish and maybe 30% or less of Randeep and rest of other peripheral characters.
I've given my two cents before... but wanted to break it down more as to what scenes I really did appreciate about the movie without being biased.Pointing out the flaws of the movie doesn't mean that I'm being insensitive and demeaning to subject at hand.
