No, Surya dev was not a mortal.  In devalok, everyone knew that Karna was his son: on earth, only a handful of people did.  Nobody knew that the Pandavas were sons of the devas either.  Only difference - while Pandu authorized the birth of the Pandavas--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Every one knew the origin of Pandavas. The Rishis brought them to Hastinapur and immediately revealed their birth stories before Dhritarashtra Bheeshma and the citizens. And Ganga never took birth as a human. She is cursed to spend sometime on the earth thats all and Vasus requested her to liberate them.

and with the concurrence of the other Rishis, spoke as follows, 'You all know that that possessor of the sovereignty of the Kurus who was called king Pandu, had, after abandoning the pleasures of the world, repaired hence to dwell on the mountain of a hundred peaks. He adopted theBrahmacharya mode of life, but for some inscrutable purpose the gods have in view, this his eldest son, Yudhishthira, was born there, begotten by Dharma himself. Then that illustrious king obtained from Vayu this other son--the foremost of all mighty men--called Bhima. This other son, begotten upon Kunti by Indra, is Dhananjaya whose achievements will humble all bowmen in the world. Look here again at these tigers among men, mighty in the use of the bow, the twin children begotten upon Madri by the twin Aswins. Leading in righteousness the life of aVanaprastha in the woods, illustrious Pandu hath thus revived the almost extinct line of his grandfather. The birth, growth, and Vedic studies of these children of Pandu, will, no doubt, give you great pleasure. Steadily adhering to the path of the virtuous and the wise, and leaving behind him these children, Pandu departed hence seventeen days ago. His wife Madri, beholding him placed in the funeral pyre and about to be consumed, herself ascended the same pyre, and sacrificing her life thus, hath gone with her lord to the region reserved for chaste wives. Accomplish now whatever rites should be performed for their benefit. These are (the unburnt portions of) their bodies. Here also are their children--these oppressors of foes--with their mother. Let these be now received with due honours. After the completion of the first rites in honour of the dead, let the virtuous Pandu, who had all along been the supporter of the dignity of the Kurus, have the first annualSraddha (sapindakarana) performed with a view to installing him formally among thePitris.'

e spent many years in ascetic penances at the source of the river Ganga. The accomplished and lovely Ganga, one day, assuming the form of a beautiful female, and rising from the waters, made up to the monarch. The celestial maiden, endued with ravishing beauty, approached the royal sage engaged in ascetic austerities, and sat on his thigh.-       --------------------------------------------------------------Here it is described that she assumed the form of a lady and sat on the thigh of Pratipa.the father of Santanu who promised her he would make her his daughter in law.Edited by ltelidevara - 8 years ago

bySiddhas andCharanas. And there he saw a lovely maiden of blazing beauty and like unto another Sri herself; of faultless and pearly teeth and decked with celestial ornaments, and attired in garments of fine texture that resembled in splendour the filaments of the lotus. And the monarch, on beholding that damsel, became surprised--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Here also Ganga just takes a human form and appears before Santanu. But it was not given that she was born as a human being. She just spent her time with Santanu ,liberated the Vasus and and went off.It is just like Urvasi who spent with Pururava and went off. But Mahabhish took birth as Santanu.Ganga the river took a human form but not born to anyone.

Thanks Preeti, Vrish n Lakshmi for clearing my doubts.
Honestly...from wat I see...we are not in agreement with the status of Godliness of the characters.
While some feel God-fathers were helpless...others feel they could have helped.
I personally agree with the latter.

From wat I see...the reason y the God-fathers of the Pandavas never intervened is bcoz they were under the care of Pandu. They had the Kuru tag...n hence did not need intervention.
Karna...on the other hand...despite having a happy family always had a status issue...n hence intervention was needed by Lord Surya n Kunti.

Coming to Kunti...it is too much to say...she was completely faultless.
Ofcourse she was cunning n manipulative...there's no doubt about that.
But from I see...she had her reasons to be so. She used her brains when she realized her position in the Kuru family. Her abandonment of Karna was unfortunate n given her age n situation...she shouldnt be blamed. But her going to Karna at such a moment was indeed manipulation.
However it is wrong to say she went like a begger...She did not ask for the lives of the Pandavas.
Karna himself granted her that.

Ofcourse Kunti was not perfect...she manipulated many things...but it can be attributed to her situation.Had Pandu been alive n the King...then maybe the situation would have been different.

Karna would have been better off if he had not known about his lineage AT ALL. The revelation to him was nothing but manipulation. But despite this...I cant help but feel for Kunti.

Finally did Kunti care about Karna?
From her actions it seems she didnt.
But if she didnt care at all...y would she send spies to find out where he is? Why the happiness at his crowning? And finally...after Karna's death she could have kept the secret to herself.
But she told the Pandavas...incurring their wrath n breaking her ideal image in their eyes.

So...maybe she didnt care about him like the way she did about others...but there was always an underlying guilt which comes forth at Karna's funeral.
Just my opinion.

Amrita, the Pandavas would have needed their deva fathers, since Pandu died pretty early and Dhritarashtra was anything but an uncle.  Bheeshma & Vidura therefore had their hands tied, and nobody in the Kuru royal family was capable of supporting them.

But except for Indra trying to get Karna's threat to Arjun blunted, there was nothing the devas did for their sons other than test them.  Surya too - only thing he did in Karna's interests was to urge him to end his enmity w/ the Pandavas

Surya did that? When? That's news to me...

My knowledge of the epics still remains woefully incomplete

If its not sidetracking the current topic too much, Bheeshma was also called Gangaputra - was it publicly known that he was the son of the Ganga herself? How did people/his family know?

Not father but brother hanuman met bhima during exile and assured him that pandavas would win and also had his blessings as a banner on Arjun's chariot.

Vibs, in Shanti Parva, Kunti tells Yudhi how both she, and Suryadev in Karna's dream, had urged him to join the Pandavas.  It's the first 4 chapters of Shanti Parva

Thanks, Vrish.

Reading the Shanti Parva (translation from Sacred Texts), they have made Karna a villain... ðŸ˜•
