I know this is completely off-topic, but having seen this lovely movie 4 times over the weekend (I swear, I spent 600 bucks on just one movie) I have to say that I am yet to come across a more spell-binding tale of love and committment!

Actually the whole idea of this post came from the similarities between Parineeta's Shekhar and KYPH's Angad! Both of them are strikingly similar in their basic nature and outwardly characters!

Shekhar (Saif in the role of a lifetime, award winning performance) is spoilt, impulsive, insanely jealous and overtly possessive but still inherently decent, sensitive and madly in love.

Lolita (Vidya Balan who brings the character alive, most impressive debut in a long time) is mature, loving, affectionate and extremely self-respecting.

Parineeta is about the passionate, tumaltounous and intense love between two childhood friends, who never realize in all their growing-up years that they are both bound to each other by this unspoken right over each other. It is only when Girish (Sanjay Dutt, again a lovely performance and a wonderful character) arrives and falls in love with Lolita, much to the chagrain and insecurity of Shekhar, that the simple, uncomplicated relationship between Shekha and Lolita takes dramatic turns, surprising both Shekhar and Lolita!

Parineeta is one of the most beautiful interpretations of love and committment as seen from a Man and a Woman's perspective. Love for Shekhar is all-consuming, controlling and domineering while for Lolita is giving, sacrificing and loving with abandon! Yet, both of them love each other with depth and intensity!

Every scene of the movie was a treat for the senses and the eyes, but one the best scene of the movie was tundoubtedly, the love-making scene between Shekha and Lolita. Rarely has any movie picturized a man and woman consummating their relationship in such an aesthetic, sensitive and romantic manner!

The whole scene was just class-apart, with Shekhar venting his pent-up anger and jealousy, accusing Lolita of playing politics while Lolita breaks-down against Shekhar's insenstivism and anger and somehow in a subtle, understated and quiet way, they both realize, accept, acknowledge and consummate their deep-rooted and intense love for one another! The way Lolita puts the gold-chain on Shekhar's neck, without realizing anything, while a stunned Shekhar suddenly becomes aware of the fact, that he is so madly in love with his childhood best friend and tells Lolita that he will complete today what she had started! Then as they make love, the title score plays, the lyrics of which say it all for Shekhar and Lolita

''Hont tere mehkhe pyale, kajrare naina tere, mathe par sindoori subhah, zulfon mein raina base.......

Saasen yeh teri hain, dhadkan bhi teri hai, jeevan yeh tera hua, tere hi chune se, tan man saja mera, hui main Paineeta..........''

There were many other scenes which were just a cinematic experience in itself, but this one stood apart!

Guys, all those who haven't seen this movie, have to go and watch it. Parineeta is a treat for the senses, it is love at its best! Saif Ali Khan just rocks in the role and I cannot imagine anyone else (except perhaps SRK) giving such credibility and sympathy to a character like Shekhar! Vidya Balan is just AMAZING. She has literally personified Lolita, and brought out the warmth, love and reality of the character beautifully!

I am thrilled to bits that I watched this movie not once but four times in two days! And believe me, I don't mind watching it once more!

Cheers,

Chilly

I'll surely check out this film....it is giving me impressions of Rhett n Scarlett in "Gone with the Wind"...passionate, intense, jealous yet true love!

This whole fascination with true love, I tell you!

There were so many scenes that were so volatile and heart-wrenching........

I particularly loved the scene where Shekhar imagines Girish and Lolita in Bed. The way he gets up violently from his sleep and is drenched in sweat.....then he plays his Piano with such furious passion (all the while imagining Lolita and Girish making love) and then ultimately breaks down sobbing heavily as the image of a young Lolita beckons him. I was crying buckets of tears in this scene.......Saif was just BRILLIANT!. He potrayed this quite rage, this madness, this passion of Shekhar with such reality, that my heart went all out for Shekhar pining for Lolita.

Another scene that was extremely emotional, but in more subtle way, was the one where Lolita is leaving for London, and her eyes keep darting back to the entrance waiting for Shekhar........anyone who has loved and lost will immediately connect with Lolita's pain and longing for Shekhar.

Also, the first scene of the movie where Shekhar who is getting married goes to Lolita's old house to meet her aunt and while leaving Lolita stops him and asks him whether he won't even look at her, speak to her or touch her. A disgusted Shekhar tells Lolita that has she no shame speaking to him like this, even though she a Parineeta (married woman) and Lolita says wistfully and emotionally, that she is saying this because she is a Parineeta..............it is only in the last scene of the movie that you understand what Lolita means by this!

Another classic piece was the interaction between Girish and Shekhar at Parul's wedding (this is the scene right after Shekhar and Lolita's love-making scene) and how Shekhar conveys to Girish in a subtle manner that he has consummated his love with Lolita and that she is only his and no one else can stake a claim on her. The way Lolita and Shekhar look at each other was just nerve-tingling and so damn romantic! And Girish immediately senses something between them, but does not fully comprehend what is going on.

The grand finale where Shekhar comes to know of the truth was just so damn emotional.........the way Shekhar keeps thinking of Lolita, as his Father utters some nonsense in the background......the way Shekhar humilates, slaps and pushes Lolita brusquely away from him......the way Lolita had put the gold chain in his neck.............it was just so well picutrized!

Saif and Vidya have put in the performance of a lifetime and have created such memorable character that we won't forget Shekhar and Lolita for a long, long time to come!

I wish I could just stop gushing on this movie and spoil the fun for you! But guys, please, please, please do watch this movie........believe me even if you don't like it as much as I did, you will definitely not regret spending money on it, atleast once!

The story line is fantastic and similar to KYPH and I was wondering what will happen in the kyph.. surely ekta will drag on...

You know the other day....when Angad was on that road-burning rampage and breaking glasses, he instantly reminded me of Shekhar opicking those marble pillars in the lawn and throwing them around...........Parineeta will somehow always remind me of KYPH and vice-versa.....even though the former is a classic by leaps n bounds and the latter though good till now may be avictiom of Kekta's tactics.😡

Well.......I hope you guys know Parineeta is a Bengali novel written by Sharat Chandra Chatterjee.........The same person who wrote Devdas.....And after Sanjay Leela Bhansali made a total mess of that story ( Since I had read the original novel, I hated Bhansali's version)......I was scared what to expect from Parineeta.....

There were quite a few bloopers in the movie.....I am afraid......For instance, Calcutta of the 60's never saw women wearing Salwar Kameez and stuff.......and there was quite a bit of deviation from the original storyline too (as in the novel).....But it is still tons better than Devdas............

The only thing that prompted me to go watch this movie was that Pradeep Sarkar, the director is my Uncle........And I thought a Bengali director couldn't do a bad job with this movie............Well......I must say.....All in all my Uncle has done a fair job with this Movie........

But Chilly I would suggest you go read the novel....Nothing can beat that.........
