The whole college had been aware of their tango, for everyone tried their best to avoid getting in the middle of it.
She was the college Diva; snobbish, arrogant and totally uptight. He was the loverboy; calm, humble and everything she wasn't. Except the fact that both of them were stubborn. Their bickering was famous in the college premises, the favourite choice of entertainment. One would always find a small crowd inconspicuously gathered around the duo as they carried out their battle of wills. For a silent student, he surely knew where and how to push her buttons.
Their friends were the most pitied. Despite the fact that the animosity between the two teams namely the Dazzlers and the Weaklings was prevalent, nobody wished to get stuck in the great battle of wits. Even if it were their best friends. Especially then.
While some thought they'd rip each others head off, others believed they'd end up together before doing so. Because they could not deny the combustible chemistry those two shared. It was the hottest topic in the college, various bets were placed on them; would they have another fight today? Would she slap him in agitation? Or would they finally see sense and start kissing each other?
Only the first bet reached any conclusion; they fought everyday.
Soon the bets faded away, they simply seemed to go no where. Just stuck in their long, durable battles, till one fine day, to be specific; Rose day.
Everyone was busy trying to woo their 'the one' and passing roses to beauties of the college, when she entered the room her chin high in the air. The effect was instant, every male jaw dropped in awe of her. Her presence always did that, add the fact that she'd dance with one of the boys that night, the effect was tremendous. In a matter of minutes all the boys (the single ones) were lined up in front of the stairs, awaiting the start of the choose-a-partner ritual. Speculations grew in the room as everyone noticed him in the line, a lopsided smirk on his face.
There was no way she would choose him, right?
People were already shaking hands and passing money when she started her inspection. Come on people, care to wager? Fifty bucks say she'll choose him. Deal, I don't think she will. Her pace grew slower as she reached him and half the audience was shocked as she came to a standstill in front of him, casting an appraising look. His grin grew and he forwarded his hand; an inviting gesture. Everyone held their breath awaiting her reaction. Come on! The hall filled with relieved sighs and disappointed groans when she placed her hand on his, a slight smile on her face.
Oh boy.
They danced in the centre of the dance floor, comfortable in each others presence, leaving everyone else baffled. The air around them was surely thickened with tension, but for once, they seemed to revel in it. She seemed to revel in it. Once in a while, she let her head fall back as a scintillating laugh left her, his smile growing wider everytime she did that. No one knew how to process this new development, if it was one. They noticed a considerable distance between them, perhaps an effort to dismiss their obvious chemistry, to emphasize on their lack of a relation.
