Cinematographers and Editors - Do they get enough credit?

When a movie succeeds, it is majorly credited to actors and directors.

Then there are writers and music directors who are also credited depending upon the movie and it's genre.

But do the cinematographers and editors get the deserved credit? Don't they play a very key role in shaping up the film? I'm sure we have high profile cinematographers and editors in our film industry as well but we hardly know their names? Kinda unfair.

I think PC Sreeram is a pretty famous cinematographer down south, but that's about it. We hardly know any other names. From the editors, I only know about Namrata Rao. Bas.

I don't know much about these technicalities but was reading an interview and the editor said, editing sets the pace of the film. Isn't it a pretty important aspect? Somehow, cinematography is more visual, so we directly or indirectly end up praising it.

but no one really talks about their work outside of award shows..

Come to think of it, the one time editors were brought to attention was when AB blamed Raavan's editor for the film's failure or something lool

No. Very few editors/cinematographers get credit for films working. I think Kahaani was almost the last film whose editing was spoken about a lot. Barfi's cinematography was spoken about a lot...I think his name was Ravi Varma or something. They definitely should get more credit...an editor pretty much puts the whole film together. They can make a film work or fail IMHO.

Anurag Kashyap, Hirani, Shimit Amin all started out as editors and still edit.

I think music directors should get more credit too. But they are still more well known han other technicians.

BW pretty much only gives credit to the actors/stars, then director...and occasionally writers (not enough though). The others don't even exist. 🥱

Unfortunately no. I mean the cinematography/editing of a film etc. is commented on but sadly we don't generally credit the actual people behind it as much as we should be doing.

more often than not, people tend to give actors more credit over edtiors if its a successful movie 😆

Exactly. Kahani was probably the last film where the editor got lots of credit for the crisp editing. I don't remember any other examples. Usually cinematography is praised indirectly but no-one mentions their names while praising it. With music directors it's like a hit and miss, sometimes they get lots of credit and sometimes they are ignored, but as you already said, it's better than other technicians. We know names of most of them and even celebrate their work.

@Chip : Havent weard of Sanu Verghese, I googled him just now 😆
