Mughal gold coin auctioned for Rs 6 lakh

A rare gold coin from the Mughal era was auctioned at Rs 6 lakh here on Saturday at the ongoing 'Rare Fair' organized by the Nashik-based Collectors Society of Numismatics and Rare Items.

A bidder from Nagpur bought the 10.82 gm gold coin, which, collectors said, dated back to the period of Akbar's reign from 1556 to 1605. The coin was auctioned by Kohinoor, a firm based in Delhi.

"We had put 460 coins for auction, of which we sold 360. We sold a gold coin that dates back to the period of Akbar's reign for the highest bid of Rs 6 lakh," Kohinoor's representative Zubair Khan said.Around 460 coins from the Mughal, Victorian and pre-Independence eras were auctioned at prices ranging from Rs 700 to Rs 6 lakh. The coins were auctioned by Mumbai-based Rajgor and Kohinoor. The event saw eighty collectors from across India gather in Nashik. Each presented their prized collection of rare coins, currency notes, stamps and antiques. Speaking to TOI, Achyut Gujarati, president of the society, said, "The auction of rare coins was held for the first time in the city. Two private firms from Mumbai and Delhi had put up 750 rare, ancient coins for auction."

Thanks for sharing. :)

I wish instead of auctioning, it'd been preserved in some museum.

True but I am sure there are many in museums too especially British Museum long time back when I visited UK and also Windsor palace I saw lot of such Indian treasures there as many officials of east India company (and Muslim invaders in the tail end of Mughal rule ) took away looted burnt spoilt lot of Mughal and Indian treasures and documents. Those Indian regimes who were pro mughal pro british could save some of their rare treasures
