The much awaited festival of bonfire, Lohri is mostly celebrated in the Northern India mostly by the Punjab communities. It is celebrated with much enthusiasm, sharing love and respect irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
The children usually sing Lohri songs from door to door collecting Lohri loot consisting of sweets, gajak, rewqi, popcorn, moongphali or money which is distributed later at the celebration. The elders of the community are rewarded by the members of the community.
Lohri is also associated with the legend of Dulla Bhatti, who lived during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar. He was regarded as the hero of Punjab. As the Indian Robinhood, he would rob the rich and distributed it among the poor. He rescued girls from the slave market and got them married off to good guys. Two girls from that lot, Sundri and Mundri are still remembered through the songs of Lohri. Dulla Bhatti is also the theme of many celebration songs sung during Lohri bonfire night.
Lohri is also a harvest festival. Rabi crops like sugarcane and various nuts are harvested in the month of January and hence the products from sugarcane plant like gurh(jaggery) and gajak are offered during Lohri celebrations.
