CHAPTER 77. HALDI CEREMONY!
Day - 7 Thursday
Sheeshmahal
It was early morning and the whole house was already awake and moving around. It was one day before the wedding and some people were rushing around getting things done at last minute while some were making arrangements for the haldi ceremony.
Geet entered the kitchen where Anjali was mixing two small bowls of haldi along with big ones beside Maamiji.
"MJ! AD! Itne saare bartan haldi ki rasam ke liye! Kya baat hai? Apne Chote aur Chutke ke baad apni patiyon ko haldi lagaaogi?", Geet giggled as Anjali glared at her, "Baby! Sharam karo!"
Geet shook her head, "Main nahi sharmaana! Bataao! Itni saari bartan kyun?"
"Geetto! The small ones will be placed in front of God for blessings!", Maamiji explained.
Geet frowned in confusion and Anjali explained further, "Bade bartan ki haldi baad mein lagegi! Pehle in chote bartan se thodi haldi ladke ko lagaayi jaaayegi aur phir isi bartan ki haldi ko le jaa kar ladki ko lagaayi jaayegi! Yahi shubh hota hai! Isliye yeh shagun ki haldi ko sambhaalke leke jaate hain aur dulha aur dulhan ke chehre pe pehle lagta hai! Uske baad yahi haldi kisiko bhi laga sakte hain lekin pehli baar yeh dulhe ke chehre pe chadhegi aur phir dulhan ke chehre par!"
Geet blinked in surprise, "Achcha! Isliye humaari haldi ladkiwaalon se pehle hai?"
Both Anjali and Maami nodded as they went back to mixing the haldi.
"Waise pehle haldi kisko lagegi? AB ko ya Veere ko?", Geet queried.
"Hello Hi Bye Bye! Arnav bitwa is bigger! So Arnav bitwa first! Then tohaar Veere! Got it?", Maami explained and Geet nodded.
As Geet pranced out of the room excited for the day, she saw Arnav standing nearby.
"Hi AB! Did you know? Pehli haldi aapko lagegi!", saying her words she was about to walk away when Arnav grasped her arm and pulled her towards him. She frowned at him and he whispered something in her ear. Her eyes widened and she asked, "Main?"
"Haan tum!", Arnav glared at her.
Geet pouted, "Par main kaise..."
"I don't know about that!", Arnav cut her off, "But I want it done! You do remember my plan, right?"
Geet took a deep breath and then nodded, "Fine! I will do it!"
Arnav wandered off and Geet huffed. Ab main yeh kaise karoon? Hey Babaji! Madat karo!
An hour later, all the Raizadas along with Khuranas and other relatives from boys' side gathered in one big room where Aakash and Arnav sat on the floor dressed in vest and pyjamas. The small bowls filled with shagun ki haldi had already been blessed by God and placed in front of the boys. Soon Naani came ahead and applied the haldi from the smaller bowl on Arnav starting the whole ceremony. Once Naani was done, the smaller bowl which contained the blessed haldi was kept aside and the bigger bowls were brought out so that everyone can apply haldi to Arnav. Every elder came and blessed him by applying haldi on him. Once elders were done family members came ahead. While Arnav smiled outwardly, inside he was filled with worry. Will he be able to convince Khushi to marry him? He had only one chance and that was at night; one last chance. And he will give his best to it. He will do his best to convince Khushi to cancel this wedding. But what if she did not accept him? He gulped. No! Don't think like that Arnav! Think positive! Hope Geet plays her move right and softens Khushi enough that when I try my best, she accepts me! Hey Devi Maiyya! Please help!
Soon it was Geet's turn to apply haldi to her AB. She giggled eagerly and gave him a mischievous wink, making him narrow his eyes. She applied haldi to his cheeks, his arms and his feet as per the ritual and then suddenly, she dipped her hands into the haldi and pasted it all over his face making everyone laugh loudly while Geet clapped her hands. Geet leaned forward and whispered to him, "Main aapka kaam kar rahi hoon na, yeh uski payment samjho!" Arnav shook his head and smiled at her just as Maami piped in, "Yeh wahaan ka khusar pusar ho rahi hai?" Arnav retorted, "Kuch nahi Maami! Motormouth promise kar rahi hai ki jitna bura haal isne mera kiya hai usse double bura haal yeh apne Veere ka karegi!"
"Kya?", Aakash's panicked voice sent everyone laughing. He looked at all of them in worry and then he looked at his little sister. She gave him one mischievous look and he gulped. Hey Geetto ke Babaji! Bachaao!
As Geet was the youngest, she was the last lady from Raizada's side to apply haldi. Next the Khuranas came up starting with NT. Anjali was watching the proceedings when Geet grabbed her and pulled her aside.
"AD! Main kya soch rahi hoon, ki iss shagun ki haldi main ladki waalon ko de aaun! Unki ceremony phir jaldi start hogi!", Geet spoke to Anjali. Anjali thought for a while and then after consulting with Maami and Naani allowed Geet to take it away.
Geet picked up the bowl and as she got up her eyes locked up with Arnav and she was reminded of what he told her when he pulled her aside and whispered into her ear, "Kuch bhi ho jaaye Geet lekin you have to make sure ki yeh special haldi mujhe lagne ke baad Khushi ko lagegi, Lavanya ko nahi! Aur uske baad tumhein Khushi ko yeh kehna hoga ki..."
Geet nodded and Arnav nodded back as Geet walked off to the girls' side. She wondered how she was supposed to apply this haldi first to Khushi in front of everyone without acting like it was deliberate. Hey Babaji! Madat karo!
Suddenly, in front of Geet, Khushi came out of a corridor and walked towards the room arranged for girls' haldi. Geet smirked as an idea entered her head. She dipped two fingers into the shagun ki haldi and hollered for Khushi, "Khushi!"
Khushi turned around and her eyes brightened at seeing Geet there.
"Geetji!", she squealed as both walked towards each other.
Geet hugged Khushi tightly and just as they came apart Geet kept her fingers close to Khushi's face while pulling herself away from Khushi. Just as she thought, the haldi smeared in her hands got smeared onto Khushi's cheek.
Suddenly, Geet gasped in shock, "Hey Babaji! Yeh kya hogaya? Kahi yeh Babaji ka koi sandesa toh nahi?"
Khushi frowned, "Kya hua Geetji? Aap itni pareshaan kyun hai?"
"Woh tumhaare gaal par...", Geet whispered pointing at Khushi's cheek.
Khushi frowned as she brushed her hand against her cheek. It was haldi on her hand!
"Koi baat nahi Geetji! Hum abhi dhoke aata hain! Chali jaayegi!", Khushi explained with a smile but Geet continued to frown.
"Tum samajh nahi rahi ho Khushi, yeh shagun ki haldi hai jo dukhe ko lagne ke baad dulhan ko hi lagni chaahiye! Uske baad ki aur pe chade toh chalega! Lekin dulhe ke baad dulhan ko hi lagni chaahiye! Hey Babaji!", Geet explained.
Khushi felt dread pool in her stomach. She knew about the shagun ki haldi and its beliefs.
Geet continued acting as if she did not notice Khushi's panicked eyes, "Yeh haldi toh abhi abhi AB ko lagke aayi! Ise toh pehle La Bhabhi ko lagna chaahiye tha! Lag gayi tumhein! Hey Babaji! Kahin yeh koi sanket toh nahi?"
Khushi looked at Geet in horror just as Geet dropped the bomb, the one Arnav had instructed her to say, "Shaayad yeh Babaji ka ishaara ho ki AB se shaadi aapki honi chaahiye! Nahi nahi! Aisa nahi ho sakta! Khushi! Please don't tell this to anyone! Main chalti hoon!"
As Geet walked away to deliver the now normal haldi, Khushi stood there in shock. She ran off to a nearby washroom and splashed water on her face trying to remove the haldi from her face. As she wiped it off, Geet's words flashed through her mind, "Shaayad yeh Babaji ka ishaara ho ki AB se shaadi aapki honi chaahiye!" Nahi! Khushi shook her head. This is not possible! She splashed some more water but as she walked out of her room, the words continued to flash through her mind. Interspersed with the words, were her memories of the time she spent with Arnav. Her chest heaved as she struggled to breath under the assault of her memories. As she walked, she saw the Devi Maiyya's murti in the mandir and ran to it. She fell in front of the Goddess and asked her through her thoughts. Kya Geetji jo keh rahi thi woh sahi tha? Kya yeh aapka sanket tha ki hum aur Arnavji ki Jodi aapke aashirwaad se bani hai aur aap chaahti hai ki humaari aur Arnavji ki shaadi ho? Bataayiye na Devi Maiyya! Kyunki agar aapne aaj nahi bataaya toh bahut jald Arnavji kisi aur ke ho jaayenge aur hum us anarth ko rok nahi paayenge! Bataayiye na Devi Maiyya! She sobbed for a while till she heard someone call her. Wiping her tears, she walked off to watch her La Di being applied the Haldi all the while hiding her pain.
Geet soon came back to see her favorite brother, Aakash, getting applied the haldi. This time Annie went with the shagun ki haldi bowl to the ladki waala along with NT and Daadi as they wanted to apply haldi to the brides too. Just as Geet arrived, Anjali handed her a smaller bowl of haldi with a wink. Anjali had transferred some haldi from bigger bowl just for Geet's prank. Geet giggled and went to sit in front of her brother. She applied the haldi as per the ritual and then grabbed the smaller bowl and poured the whole thing onto Aakash's head. Aakash's scream made everyone laugh as Geet giggled and ran off.
"Geetto ki bachchi! Dekhlunga tujhe main!", Aakash shouted amongst the laughter. Geet ran off while looking at Aakash and crashed into Maan. Her leg slipped and she was about to fall when Maan grasped her by her waist and pulled her upright.
Geet muttered sorry just as she looked up and noticed it was Maan holding her. She grinned happily, "Oye hoye! Aaj toh mere hero ne meri jaan bachaayi! Haaye!" Maan glared at her and she spoke nonchalantly, "Waise kamar pe haath rakhna tha toh pooch lete! Aise chance kyun maar rahe ho?"
Maan took a sharp breath as he realised that he was still holding Geet's waist. He pushed her back and folded his arms against his chest making Geet giggle.
"Aapko jo karna hai karlo Maan! Par shaadi toh aapko mujhse karni hai! Bas kuch dino ki baat hai phir aap pe lagi hui haldi mujhpe lagegi! Dekhlena!", Geet informed him.
"Geet! Yeh sirf tumhaare sapno mein hoga! Asliyat mein nahi!", Maan retorted making Geet pout.
"Sapno mein kai baar humaari shaadi hochuki hai! Maine toh sapne mein bachchon ko bhi dekhliya!", Geet spoke making Maan hiss, "Geet! Tum paagal hogayi ho!" He turned around and stormed off as Geet giggled. Maan! Aap kitni bhi koshish karlo! Aakhir aapko mere paas aana hai! Mera pyaar jo hai aapko kheech laane ke liye! Geet walked off while singing under her breath, "Jaayiye Aap Kahaan Jaayenge, Yeh Nazar Laut Ke Phir Aayegi!"
One hour later, the haldi was applied, and then boys were sent to take bath. After that the girls' father, or in this place, girls' brother Maan would gift them new clothes which they would wear and their aarti would be done. As the boys' went for bath, someone asked for some dance and song performance till then for entertainment, "Arre! Shaadi ka ghar hai! Haldi lag chuki hai! Thoda naach gaana bhi ho!" Everyone echoed the sentiment and Geet was asked by Anjali to perform, "Baby! Kuch gaao na!"
Geet smiled eagerly and stepped up to sing.
