Ronit Roy: I'm doing a daily soap after four years and I have high expectations from myself

Ronit Roy is back to doing a daily soap after four years and the show Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyar, which launches on November 18 (Tuesday) and airs every Monday to Thursday at 10.30 pm on Sony Entertainment Television, is special to him, he says. Excerpts from an interview:

Why is Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyar special to you?
I'm working with Ekta Kapoor after four years and she is special to me. All the work she has given me to date on television has been quite path-breaking. So, this show automatically becomes a special piece of work to do. Also, the expectations I have from myself are high.

The underlying idea here is that a couple may divorce, but parents can never separate...
The story is about this man and woman who fall in love, get married, but the way they think, their ideologies are different and for some reason, they get divorced. They have four kids " two stay with the wife and two with the husband, who moves to New York. The story begins when his daughter, who is 18-19, wants to get married and she invites her father for her wedding.

On the personal front, you too have a teenaged daughter from your first marriage, who is in the US.
My daughter is a young woman now. She is 23. I, of course, have missed out on her childhood completely. There's a time in life when you are trying to stay afloat, working towards achieving something. Even in this show, it's about getting busy in one's life and in the process, losing out on a lot of things. I totally understand that I have lost out on my daughter's childhood and it is something that can never come back. She recently told me how, as a kid, each time she saw an aeroplane in the sky, she would think her father is coming. As a child, she obviously went through a lot. Then, one day, she grew up and when she was 17 or 18, we had a long chat. I know I tried to be there as much as I could, but we were in two different countries on the opposite sides of earth. Now, the only thing I can do in my power is to catch up on all the lost time. You can't make up for what is gone, but the only thing you can do is to make the future better.

So, what's the rapport you share with her today?
I love it when my daughter calls me dad. We are in touch, messaging each other on cell. It's good there is technology now. There was a time when we used to meet once a year and didn't have too much to talk about, as we didn't know each other well. But some years back, when she started putting down her thoughts on email, I began to understand her point of view. I was there at her graduation ceremony in the US and that was a great feeling. We need to catch up on 23 years of our lives. Hopefully, God will give me the chance to do so.

Coming back to Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyar, Pallavi Kulkarni Nerurkar and you are acting together for the first time. How did you break the ice?
Fortunately, when I met her on the first day while we were shooting the promo, there was no ice to break because there was instant warmth and chemistry. You have seen the pictures and promos. People think we look very good together on screen. Pallavi is coming back to television after six years, but her comfort level with the camera belies that. She is an extremely easy-going person and has no pretensions. It's great to work with her and I hope it stays like that.

You are doing a daily soap again, so it's back to the grind?
I'm back to a bigger grind. Most films I did was when I was doing Adaalat and it being a weekend show, you could bank episodes. Now with a daily soap, it's going to be a bit of a challenge. But I will have to manage because both, films and television, are equally important to me. I don't want to sacrifice either.

Same here...I never bother to watch soaps. This one is only for Ronit. I won't be watching it at night. I'll catch up the online version some time in the evenings. Its only a half hour show so I guess I'll be able to make time for it. If it sustains my interest, good. Else...bye bye...😆

Can't wait for this role because I'm sure he'll bring much more gravitas and realism to this role because of personal experience :)
