Gurpurab is celebrated enthusiastically & vivaciously in Northern region of India - mainly in parts of Punjab- Amritsar, Chandigarh, Anandpur Sahib. For Sikhs, this event is about paying homage to the precursor of Sikhism, Shri Guru Nanank Dev Ji. Excitement surrounds the celebrators within 2-3 weeks in advance. The sequence in which the rituals are conducted are as follows:
It is held prior to the day which is organized by Panj Pyaare (5 Beloved) in which Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (the holy relic) is taken along with the devotees to conduct rounds in the locality & serve the passerbyer(s) with some snacks & teas in order to attain one of the aims of the Guru- "Wand Chako (Share & consume)."
The congregation starts singing Gurbani at about 1:20 am at night, which is the actual time of birth of Guru Nanak. The celebrations culminate at around 2 am.
(Morning Walks)
These are commenced on the day of Kartik Poornima, which marks the birth of the saint as it is supposed that Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on Poornima in the month of Kartik (Oct- Nov). These are done in order to award the people once in a while aware that they should pray & seek blessings from the Almighty whenever possible. This also gets to cover Guru's aim- "Naam Japo (Offer Prayers)." Amrit Vela (Time Of Purity) is considered best for meditation & reciting of Gurbani hymns.
These two (Sukhmani Sahib & Japji Sahib) are confined prayers which are considered fruitful only if recited in the morning. These are cohesive in nature with Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
Katha (exposition of scripture) takes place, followed by Langar, which was preferred by Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji as he believed in communal lunch for everyone irrespective of caste, colour, race, creed with the spirit of Service & Devotion.
Evening Prayer
Rehras Sahib as well as some hymns are recited in the time of evening. At night, Gurudwaras are decked up with lights, candles and diyas all over the world. Inside, decorations are made in a joyous manner. Nowdays, some followers burst firecrackers to spread happiness holistically.
On this auspicious day,
When the world was blessed with a soul so pure,
We would like to wish all of you a very happy Guru Purab,😃
Regards,
