Sony's newest launch, Hum Hain Na starring Kanwar Dhillon and Pratyusha Banerjee, is off to a decent start. The first episode was aired on September 1st after a lot of buzz created by the promos. Here's our take on it...
What's it about?
Set in the cultural backdrop of Benaras, Hum Hain Na, is the love story of Shivprasad Mishra aka Bunty (Kanwar Dhillon) and Saagrika Chatopadhyay (Pratyusha Banerjee). Though the story has a very strong romantic element, it mainly revolves around the male protagonist, Bunty, who is an ideal son, grandson and brother. The first episode mainly introduces the humble and responsible side of Bunty. The Mishra household is under a lot of pressure owing to the upcoming wedding of their elder son, Pappu and Bunty is in charge of managing everything. The episode also draws a sketch of Saagrika's character who has just returned from London where her father was a professor. Saagrika is extremely excited about her return since this is her birth town and the only place she associates with her deceased mother.
What's hot?
The chocolate boy image of Kanwar Dhillon from his Do Dil Ek Jaan days, seems to have worked really well in his favour. A stellar performer that he is, Rajendra Chawla's chemistry with his onscreen wife and his relation with his sons is remarkable. Also worth mentioning was Bade Bhaisaheb or Pappu, whose innocence is sure to bring a smile to your face. The highlight of the show is the bond between the family members. Also, unlike most shows, the first episode was not all about the leads, but gave a rough character sketch of every member, so we know what to expect.
What's not?
Though the characters of the Mishra family were well brought out, the same cannot be said about Saagrika and her father played by Ashiesh Roy. Almost all of their scenes seemed rehearsed and awkward. The over dramatized talking to the deceased mother's photo was the epitome of clichs and Pratyusha Banerjee's below par acting further compromises the authenticity of her character. The showcase of "humility personified" trait of Bunty was extremely simplistic and felt like an over dose of Mr Goodie two shoes. Given that it is yet another love story, we expected to see something more refreshing than the idealization of the male protagonist and the typical in-search-of-a-dream-boy-with-a-golden-heart female lead.
Verdict:
Better than the routine saas-bahu melodrama the show works largely due to the colorful characters it has introduced. Watch it if you like family dramas.
