As Walt Disney rightly said, 'I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something, than educate people and hope they were entertained.' Entertainment is the greatest teacher, and with the mass reach that television commands in the country, it is only apt that they provide a social message.

And that is exactly what the makers are doing. TV shows are no longer about saas-bahu and the sacrificing heroine. Nowadays, many shows are now trying to creating awareness about injustice being done to women and are inspiring them to take up action against wrong doings. Here's a look at some of them.

Balika Vadhu Issue: The changing role and status of women The show started with the plight of a child marriage. Subsequently it dealt with issues like extramarital affairs, domestic violence, plight of widows, remarriage and women's education. In the present track, the popular show is spreading awareness about date rape, MMS and is focusing on keeping aside your fear and standing up for your rights. Anandi helps her sister-in-law, a rape victim, fight her case and send the perpetrators to jail. At the end of every episode, a social message is given.
