They got rid of them as villains and comedians were being reduced to caricatures. Also it was creating a separation and hierarchy amidst actors - there were heroes/heroines and then the comedians, villains etc. Johnny Lever, Ashok Saraf, Laxmikant Berde etc were typecast as comics. Amrish Puri, Pran, Prem Chopra were typecast as villains. However, in cinema there are only lead characters and supporting characters. A villainous role or a funny role should either be the lead or lend support. An actor is an actor and should play any role that appeals to them, they should be able to lead or support as the role demands without being typecast or categorized.
SRK's roles in Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam should have been for lead actor. If it were up to me, I would give Paresh Rawal the lead actor award for Hera Pheri because he was the foil that carried the movie.

Looks like the award categories get created as per the convenience of the jury. When they want to give award to a certain actor, they simply create a category. When none of their favorites are in certain category, it isn't really bothered about anymore.
