I heard taunts from people for three years after Indian Idol: Bhoomi Trivedi
Bhoomi Trivedi

Bhoomi Trivedi's song Ram Chahe Leela has become an instant hit. Here she talks about her struggle for three years before landing the song and what has worked for her as a singer and performer

Bhoomi Trivedi, 25, hails from a family in Baroda that has always been inclined towards music. While her father, a Railways employee, loves to sing, her mother's a folk singer. Bhoomi, who has sung the sensuous Ram Chahe Leela in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Ram-Leela, admits she was just two-and-a-half years old when she began humming. With only singing on her mind, the youngster admits her road to Bollywood hasn't been easy. Excerpts...

How did you bag Ram Chahe Leela?
I was initially approached to pen Gujarati lyrics and sing that bit for a song arranged by Shail Hada, who is a friend. Over there, he told me that Sanjayji was looking for a different voice to sing a song and asked me to attempt it. I gave it a shot and was ecstatic when I was told that they liked my singing and wanted me to sing the song. The song, by itself, is extremely tough, especially if you see the ending. It has a very audacious touch to it. I was asked to sing it like Udit Narayan orKishore Kumar would. I thought to myself, if they'd told me to sing it like Asha Bhonsle, Anuradha Paudwal or Sunidhi Chauhan would, I could imagine myself singing it. But, to sing it like a man, was a first. I heard their songs and finally sang it. It was liked by all. In fact, I never knew I could sing like this myself. The icing on the cake was when I learnt that Priyanka Chopra would be dancing to this number, which was I got to know only on the day of the shoot.

Did you see the song being picturised?
Yes. In fact, when I discovered that Priyanka would be dancing to the tune, I called the team to confirm. They said that they wanted to keep it as a surprise for me. Later, when we went on the set, I just couldn't believe the way it was being picturised, the sensuousness, the opulence was amazing. And there, I saw Sanjayji and ran to him and sought his blessings. He patted my back and said that he loved what I did to the song. Later, Priyanka met me and told me that I have a very sensuous and different voice. I was over the moon.

It took over three years for you to land yourself this big song after being part of a reality show. How were the years in between?
Fortunately, I have had a family that has always stood by me. From my young age, they've taken time off their work to take me to singing contests. When I figured at the top league of the show, everyone expected me to immediately get a lot of work. But, I knew this struggle would be hard and I needed patience. While I was liked by many veteran singers and also film stars when on the show, I recall how Bipasha and Preity Zinta said they wanted me to sing for them. But, it took a few years to land myself a film song, though I did have many live shows with the best names from the music industry. In between, I heard taunts from people for three years after Indian Idol, where they used to point how someone has landed a film song, while I didn't. But, I'm fortunate that I've got such a big break so early in life, when I know so many others who are still looking for recognition.

Today's singers require to be better groomed that those from yesteryears, especially for performances. Do you think it's a tough ask?
It is true that we need to look our best when we're singing on stage and even have to dance and put on a good act to entertain the audience. But, it also depends on where you're performing. If you're performing at a religious function, you'd be wearing an anarkali or ghagra, while a college event requires you to be funkier. I recall one incident where I was to perform at a college function and had thought I'll wear an ensemble of a leather pant, leather jacket and boots. Unfortunately, when I landed at the college, I realised I didn't have my leather pants. I then decided to team up my leather jacket with shorts that I'd bought for my nightwear. You wouldn't believe it when I say this, but it was a great performance which everyone liked. Eventually, it is all about attitude.

So who is excited about TFR with Ranveer and Deepika tonight? ðŸ˜³

The episode airs tomorrow at my place, but I am hoping one of you guys from India will be kind enough to upload the video on the forum by tomorrow morning

I think the episode will be good, but not dhamakedaar, as evident from promos. Deepika looks reserved as always and this time it seems, she has tutored Ranveer to behave properly!😆

But I am dying to see Veeru's expression when Anupama tells them that they are lying about not dating one another.😆

Ranveer Singh (L) and Deepika Padukone at an event in Mumbai, Sept. 16.

Bollywood actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone joined critic Anupama Chopra on The Front Row,' to talk about their on-screen chemistry, working with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and meeting high expectations.

Their film, "Ram-Leela," a romantic drama, releases Nov. 15.

Edited excerpts:

Anupama Chopra: It's rare to see a couple scorch the screen like this. How do you construct this level of heat?

Ranveer Singh: I don't think you can credit it to anything from this world. It's inexplicable. None of us can take credit for it either. We can give it to Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He makes sure that his actors bring the best to the table. He understands that in a film like "Ram-Leela", the essence and the core of the film would be the chemistry between the leads.

Deepika Padukone: I think a large part of it is in the way that it's written.  It's also in the kind of equation that our director has with us. He knows what buttons to press to get that. In a love story like "Ram-Leela" it's very important to have that kind of chemistry. Otherwise I think the love story just falls flat.

Anupama: Sanjay Leela Bhansali reworking Shakespeare - clearly the idea here is to create a grand, epic romance. As actors, were you ever weighed down by the heightened pitch of the film?

Ms. Padukone: I felt very burdened.  I had very little time to prepare and with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, expectations are soaring.

Mr. Singh: Yes, because Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a volatile creator. He feels like the best will come out of you when your back is against the wall for some reason. But he puts you on the spot, he throws you that challenge, but then after he has done that, rest assured he will do everything in his power and ability to give you the support to be able to meet that challenge.

Anupama: Ranveer, you had described yourself as someone who is just inherently over the top. But that's exactly what "Ram-Leela" feels like. Did that make you feel at home?

Mr. Singh: Absolutely. It could not be truer than that. I feel I am the ultimate Bhansali actor. He loves histrionics. I do histrionics. I love theatrical acting. He loves this high drama. I am all about it. He loves song and dance. So I was on home territory.

Anupama: Deepika, you have said that none of your other co-stars have been as uninhibited as Ranveer. In what way is he uninhibited?

Ms. Padukone: Uninhibited is uninhibited. There is no thought or worry or How am I going to look or how am I going to do this or will I look silly doing it?'  Even as a co-star, if you need him to give cues or you just need his energy on set, he is there.

Anupama: The lyrics to the song "Ishqyaun Dhishqyaun" go: Ladaku vimaan hai par tu meri jaan hai, bistar yeh tera mera jung ka maidan hai' (Translation: You are a firebrand but you are my life. Our bed is our battlefield). Clearly the sexuality is in your face with this film.

Mr. Singh: It's that kind of movie. There is so much passion and I love the fact that it's so plausible, so natural.  So where does love really begin, what's that one starting point? It's when you look at a person and you are taken in by the visual. So first it starts with a physical attraction and there is lot of that in the film. It's a very passionate love story.

Ms. Padukone: I guess [Sanjay Leela Bhansali] has also tried to capture what he feels the youth today is going through, they don't hold back. If you feel, you feel and you express. You are not scared. You are not worried. I think that's what we have tried to capture through the film and through our characters.

Watch "The Front Row with Anupama Chopra" Friday at 8:30 p.m. on Star World for the full conversation with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. For more details on the show log on to their website. Follow us on Twitter and on Facebook.

Seriously...did they have a fight or something?😕

Deepika is not promoting a single reality show with Ranveer...in fact, she is not promoting at all!

It can't be just her shooting schedule...that too for a small film like FFF! Besides, these things are already arranged by the marketing team in advance, keeping in mind the actor's schedules etc...did they deliberately set up the promotion strategy in this manner?

RL is as big a film for Deepika as it is for Ranveer, she should be promoting it as much as he is!

I am really surprised by the promotions and whoever has organized it!

So basically, Ranveer is coming on DID, CC and KBC on his own?😕 And he has already done city promotion tours of Patna, Chandigarh and Lucknow solo!

PS: Fans are going mad on twitter, complaining why Deepika is not taking part in any promotional activity!!! The RL team has no answer to give!
