I think the buzz is great for the film...plus, its one of those rare films where the entire family can go and watch it together.
Am going for the late evening show today...pretty excited!

No way, really? I was planning to catch it in Vivo this weekend! Looks like I'll have to watch it some other time! I remember YJHD's first 3 shows on Friday were empty, followed by a completely booked weekend all over!

Review: Krrish 3 is a superhero mashup

Hrithik Roshan in Krrish 3Sukanya Verma says Krrish 3 is a outrageous mishmash of Bollywood sentimentality meets E.T. meets Superman meets X-Men with set pieces, sound design and screenplay structure liberally borrowed from Hollywood's imagination.

Fusion is the future,' predicts Vivek Oberoi as Kaal wearing a complexion that's perplexing for a non-vampire and conviction that's better suited to a gourmet chef.

Product of a lab experiment gone awry, which leaves him with Professor X's powers and paraplegia, Kaal runs a research facility. One that churns out mutants at the speed of a palak paneer dosa, who assist the pale dude in creating both, viruses and antidotes, so enterprisingly, they'd put Santa's Elves to shame.

Kaal addresses these half human, half beast monstrosities as Maanwars. Of these only a guy, an X-Men's Toad rip-off, with a tongue that resembles bubblegum and behaves like Rapunzel's hair and Kangna Ranaut's shape-shifting Mystique, er, Kaya, get maximum screen time.

Amitabh Bachchan's booming baritone introduces Kaya as Science ka karishma' What's truly miraculous is just how her precariously-tailored costume averts any wardrobe malfunction while she freely somersaults and leaps off skyscrapers like Catwoman.

Even so, Kangna does exceedingly well for herself. There's marked improvement in her diction, demeanour and timing. Limited duration cannot restrict her flair (you cannot talk about this film without mentioning that word) to convey the tender complexities of her dual persona. Her co-star Priyanka Chopra is mostly wasted as Krrish's rollover romantic interest.

This variety is what Krrish is up against in his second avatar as superhero and third film as franchise in filmmaker Rakesh Roshan's ambitiously-scaled, action-packed and blatantly-inspired Diwali offering targeted at kids.

Even the dialogues carry a simplistic tone, an easy mix of English and Hindi to communicate technical jargon, like they do in the dubbed Doraemon series on television.

Roshan Senior's movies have never been about layers or nuances. Be it Khudgarz, Khoon Bhari Maang, Kishen Kanhaiya or Karan Arjun (HR may have paid a fleeting tribute to Raakhee in one scene), he's known to play up a traditional narrative and play to the gallery. At times, bordering on corny. On occasions, beyond it.

The desi superhero flick doesn't always retain the grandiloquence but cannot resist the urge to go overboard or absurd, at which I laughed anyway.

There's not much intentional humour in Krrish 3 save for a needless track featuring Rajpal Yadav and Rakhi Vijan. Roshan's script makes up for this insufficiency with some hilarious moments courtesy Vivek Oberoi's global destruction threats two seconds after a transplant (in a bathroom robe), his blink and bomb skills, reversed Darth Vader speech or that epic face-off with the cameras.

Oberoi muzzles a part that's screaming for enigma and quirk with seriousness and scowl. The upshot is a villain who's funny not fun.

The special effects are completely devoid of elegance or finesse but the fights/thrills are a compelling and dynamic compensation for the dip in momentum caused by Rajesh Roshan's lumpy soundtrack.

Krrish 3 beats Yaadein hands down in terms of unabashed product placement (Spot Sussanne Roshan's lifestyle store, The Charcoal Project " the only unhurt piece of architecture amidst the Man of Steel-inspired ruinous battle). You cannot imagine the extent a brand of pen is woven into this script and its bombastic conclusions.

Unlike the caped/masked/spandex-suited icons of the genre with years and years of comic book history to source from, Krrish is a outrageous mishmash of Bollywood sentimentality meets E.T. meets Superman meets X-Men with set pieces, sound design and screenplay structure liberally borrowed from Hollywood's imagination.

Still, this isn't a sudden realisation. Koi...Mil Gaya and Krrish amply underscored the pattern. Yet, every time, it worked, on the strength of Hrithik Roshan"his energy, verve and a conspicuous sincerity that renders his dramatised pursuit for justice a gleaming credibility. If it worked for you then, there's no reason it will not again. In Krrish 3, he comes to the rescue of planes, traffic, kids, epidemics and Mumbai city as the masked messiah and invents sunny breakthroughs while chomping on Bournvita and gurgling heh-heh' as his scientist dad.

As the regular guy, though, he doesn't make any headway. Hrithik appears far too groomed and spruced up to pass off as security guard or waiter. He comes alive, as an actor and character, only when he's in his superhero suit or Rohit's get-up, successfully creating two distinct identities.

I am all for a sculpted physique but his needless display of god-knows-how-many-packs torso made me nauseous. Extending the same goodwill with which he explains to a little boy not to try dangerous stunts at home, I'd advise HR to go easy on the gym.

It's not original. It's not subtle. What Krrish 3 is is astonishingly eager to entertain with its stock of doodads that should amuse if not endear.

Film Review: Krrish 3

Views 465 Make Favourite starstarstarstarstar
Film: Krrish 3

Rating: ***

Director: Rakesh Roshan

Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Vivek Oberoi By Sayantan Dalal What it is about: Our desi hero, Krrish, is back on a much bigger scale than ever. And this time around the superhero has to face not one but a whole team of mutants led by Kaal (Vivek Oberoi).
What's good: At the very least, Krrish 3 will light you up in these troubling days of recession and crimes. What can get better than a good prevails over evil story just before Diwali?
The VFX used in the film can't get better than this, especially considering it's done here in India. Having said that the VFX are complemented by some good histrionics and plot-twists. Vivek Oberoi has done a commendable job as the super villain, especially since for over 70 per cent of the film he is stuck in a Professor X (from X -Men) inspired wheel-chair. Hrithik is brilliant in a triple role and does everything with finesse. So much so that when the camera focuses on his ripped body, everything fades away including leading ladies Kangana and Priyanka. Kangana's character goes through a range of emotions and manages to strike a chord. What's not: First of all the whole debate about whose role is better and more important than the other can finally be put to rest. Krrish 3 has more for Kangana than Priyanka. It's a shame that the film doesn't exploit Priyanka's talent in depth. Lastly, edit out the songs from the film and I will probably watch it again!
What to do:
It's worth a watch for all super-hero fans. Krrish 3 delivers on all aspects, as promised.

After two huge successes, the latest installment of the Krrish franchise had to be bigger. And there's no doubt that it is much bigger in scale. The special effects live up to the expectations and the good news is, it's all done in India. In fact, it's the action that matches up to the scale of Hollywood films and keeps you entertained.

In Krrish 3 there is family drama, a desi story, bad guys who won't quit and of course, a superhero! No prizes for guessing the premise, Krrish will take on the evil mutants and save the world. The evil force this time is Kaal (Vivek Oberoi) who is on a wheelchair and can only move his head and two fingers with which he pretty much runs his entire evil empire. With the help of lab experiments, he has created his own army of "maanvars", a combination of man and animal. One of them is Kaya (Kangana Ranaut) who, like a chameleon, can change her appearance.

Our hero Krishna (Hrithik Roshan) is now married to his lady love Priya (Priyanka Chopra). They live with his father, Rohit Mehra (also played by Hrithik Roshan) who works for the well being of the society. His main goal is an experiment which, with the help of sun rays, will bring life into the dead.

Rakesh Roshan makes sure you are entertained throughout, be it because of the special effects or the masala plot. The entry scene of Krrish saving a plane from crash landing is well done and that sets the ball rolling. Needless to say one of the great assets of the film is Hrithik Roshan who portrays three roles in this film (Rohit, Krrish, Krishna). In fact, in the action scenes, you just know that there could be no other mainstream star in Bollywood who could do it the way he pulls it off. His newly toned body can give any Hollywood actor a run for their money.

The filmmaker ensures that the acting department does a fab job! Vivek Oberoi delivers a brilliant show as the negative lead, even though he is limited to a wheelchair in most parts of the film. Priyanka Chopra is sincere in every frame. And Kangana Ranaut is simply outstanding! I'm told she initially rejected this role and then later agreed to do it. Now I know why she came back to it. She sails smoothly in the evil character gliding through the action scenes and making them look all natural.

The only part where the movie dips is during the songs. The music sounds too dated for this action packed film.

In most of his interviews, Rakesh Roshan insisted that Krrish 3 is not just an action film and now I know what he meant. He weaves a very interesting story together which I obviously won't give away here.

The makers made sure that it sends a positive message, 'there is a superhero is in all of us'. Krrish 3 is a worthy addition to the franchise.

Having survived Rakesh Roshan's Koi... Mil Gaya and Krrish, I walked into Krrish 3 knowing what to expect - inspiration' from Hollywood films, inept direction and special effects, laughable dialogue, not-so-great songs and actors who don't feel embarrassed by their cringe-inducing roles. What I didn't expect was for Krrish 3 to be so mercilessly, excruciatingly boring. The superhero of atrocious superhero filmmaking has struck again, and it's not a pretty sight. Take the most superficial components of X-Men, Batman, Superman, Spiderman and even Shaktimaan; stuff them together in a litter bag, set that bag on fire and inhale the fumes - that's pretty much what Krrish 3 feels like. The film is two and a half painful hours of poorly presented, unexciting action scenes, awful computer graphics, unimaginative storytelling and Hollywood theft of the most blatant and shameless variety. So divorced from the spirit and energy of superhero films is Krrish 3 that it feels like something cobbled together by a bunch of clueless people who are convinced that Hrithik + Dance + Flying + Kangana cleavage = free money from cinemagoers. Superhero fans and movie geeks, even the teenage ones, deserve a lot better than this. The plot' picks up a few years after the events of Krrissh 2 (better known as Krrish). Junior and Senior Hrithik are up against a superhuman baddie named Kaal. This time, family gets kidnapped and things get personal, because Kaal is to Krrish what Venom is to Peter Parker. Will Krrish save the damsel in distress from Vivek Oberoi's clutches? Watch the movie to unravel the mystery! The film is proud to claim five screenplay writers, which suggests that either the writers are Superhero Nom de Plumes of Rakesh Roshan, or they expect their audience hasn't seen a single Hollywood movie or read a comic book.

Flip to any random sequence of Krrish 3 and you'll see a film instructor's worst nightmare: a) Acting that is clumsy at best and unintentionally funny at worst. For some bizarre reason, Hrithik, who is in fact a massive talent, spasms and quivers his face every time he wears his Krrish costume and flies. Does the cold wind of Mumbai's stratosphere make him shudder? b) Costumes and sets that look like they were recycled from Alif Laila. A lot of buildings collapse and crumble like the 1950s' Japanese Godzilla movies. c) Songs written and choreographed to give the impression of a mammoth collision of various terrible components from 90s' Bollywood. d) Action choreography and editing that makes Ajooba look modern and stylish. Shyam Benegal has directed better action scenes than those found in Krrish 3. e) More product placements than you can count. A big experiment that Krrish's Scientist Papa does with lights has a prism branded Flair Pens'. In another scene, Hrithik and Priyanka literally walk into a frame from either side and the camera focuses on two prominent brand hoardings instead of their faces. Astoundingly, Krrish 3 is able to showcase CGI that seems to have been created using MS Paint. Seriously, the special effects in this movie make Ra.One and Aditya 369 look like the works of Stanley Kubrick and Ingmar Bergman. One wonders if Rakesh Roshan has seen Rajinikanth's Enthiran, because a film that arrives three years after Enthiran should be more action packed and imaginative. But the soulless action set pieces in Krrish 3 just sit there, lazily trying to dazzle you with shrieking stupidity. Oberoi, who is initially a combo of Professor X and Magneto, later wears a metallic costume that looks like it was bought from a clearance sale at a Halloween store. Think Shaquille O' Neal from Steel, but infinitely more ridiculous - that is what Oberoi's scary villain' looks like in Krrish 3. The poor guy looks even more amusingly ludicrous during the flying and landing scenes because the CGI is almost worse than the croma from Superman of Malegaon. Kangana Ranaut, who is smart and candid in person, is given perhaps the most embarrassing role of her career. She's made to wear latex S&M costumes and deliver her lines in elliptic staccato. From Ranaut's blank (but beautiful) face to the perpetually-confused one of Exotic Chopra and including all the scene-chewing cameos from Arif Zakaria, Rajpal Yadav, Mohnish Behl and Rakhee Tandon (Sweety from Hum Paanch), this is a movie that has desi versions of pretty much every character from every American superhero series. And just as Mystique morphs so smoothly into different personals, your bewilderment morphs into contempt as you watch Krrish 3, because really, the film is just a filmmaker calling you a moron for two and a half hours.

Film review: Krrish 3 is an entertaining mix of spectacle and human-scale drama

Friday, Nov 1, 2013, 8:44 IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

The film is fast-paced, the effects are smashing, and what works is that Krrish is engaging and endearing even when he is is out of costume.

Film: Krrish 3:
Directed by: Rakesh Roshan
Starring: Hrithik Roshan, Vivek Oberoi, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut
Rating: ***1/2

What it's about

Krrish 3 continues the story of Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) and his superhero son Krishna or Krrish (Hrithik Roshan), afterKoi... Mil Gaya and Krrish. When Krishna is not saving lives, he is trying to hold down a job. He lives with his wife Priya (Priyanka Chopra) and father Rohit in Mumbai. Hell breaks loose when a virus spreads in the city.

Rohit finds a cure for it but manages to earn the wrath of Kaal (Vivek Oberoi) who releases his army of mutants or Manwars (Manav + jaanwars) on his family. Krrish has to save his family, his city, it's people and overpower this super villain.

What's good

Let me assure you right at the onset that Rakesh Roshan has packed din enough in the film to make aKrrish fan get his/her money's worth. A superhero franchise escapade that delivers fully on it's promise and raises the bar for future desi superhero films. It's movie escapism at it's best.

Krrish 3 is an entertaining mix of spectacle and human-scale drama. Roshan combines his imagination and flair to deliver a film that is sure to capture everyone's imagination. It has something for everybody. For a superhero film fan there are fantasy characters, a super villain, full scale heroism, plot twists and superb action.

For a Bollywood fan, there is enough emotion, drama, love story and songs. For the bachcha party there are plenty of exciting and exhilarating moments. The film is fast-paced, the effects are smashing, and what works is that Krrish is engaging and endearing even when he is is out of costume.

Krrish may be a superhero but it is his human side that is so appealing. Hrithik Roshan is oh-so-watchable in every frame. He owns both the roles with such ease. Kangana Ranaut is delightful as an alien making the weird hair and clothes work for her. She even manages to make you feel her pain. Quite an accomplishment that! Every action adventure needs a memorable villain. Vivek Oberoi as Kaal ensures you won't ever forget his act. Priyanka is saddled with a role that doesn't do her justice. She deserved a meatier role.

What's not

It's a gallery of product placements, which ruins the movie experience repeatedly. The music could not have been worse. The film " aimed more at kids, than adults gets a little complicated at times, making you wonder if the young ones will be able to grasp it. It is highly derivative. It borrows heavily from almost every superhero film you have seen. If I had to list them, it would take up the entire review's space.

What to do

This is the kind of film one can unabashedly enjoy for what it is. Go on, indulge the superhero fan in you.
